The State Board of Education (SBOE) sets policies and standards
forTexas public schools.The primary responsibilities of the SBOE
include:
Setting curriculum standards
Reviewing and adopting instructional materials
Establishing graduation requirements
Overseeing theTexas Permanent School Fund
Appoint board members to military reservation and special school
districts
3. WHAT’STHE PROBLEM?
The governor ofTexas has appointed a
chairperson that does not use public schools for
her own family
Who has never worked in public schools
You would not hire a tax attorney to defend you in
a criminal case if your life was on the line.
4. WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT?
Become more informed about the people running
for office
Specifically the State Board of Education
Also the Governor, because he makes the
selection for the chairperson from within elected
board members
5. VOTE!
Get out and vote.
Know who you are voting for.
Pay attention to all elections not just the
popular ones because a lot of these
positions are filled during the midterm
elections.
