● When you access data in Microsoft Outlook, it saves that data
in a PST file and creates a file extension that is called .pst. It
allow you to create your own personal Outlook data file.
● PST (Personal Storage Table) is the most commonly used file
by any accounts and can be synced with the configuration of
POP3, IMAP or HTTP accounts.
4. Why do we Need Password for PST
File
● Suppose you are using Microsoft Outlook on your shared
computer that are also accessible by your friends/family
members, it means they can also access all your Outlook PST
items.
● You’ve some important PST files that you don’t want to share
with anyone apart from you. In this situation, you can use
password for the desired PST file. This password will lock the
PST file/folder and will be opened only after entering the
password. Locking the PST file save your important
information from being leaked and protect PST file/folder from
external intrusion.
5. Manual Solution: Steps to unlock
PST file if you forgot your Password
● Start your MS Outlook >> click on “File”.
● Click on “Account Settings” >> click again on “Account
Settings”.
● Click on “Data Files” >> click to select “Email Account Name”
>> click on “Settings…”
● A box namely, “Outlook Data File” will open >> click on
“Change “Password…”.
● In the Change Password, under the “Old password” section,
type the old password and leave the “New password” and
“Verify” section blank >> click on “OK” to remove password
from PST file.

● According to your Outlook version find the path locating
scanpst.exe as shown as below:
● For MS Outlook 2002 & XP:

● For MS Outlook 2000:

● For MS Outlook 97 or 98:

7. ● Now double click to run the “scanpst.exe” and click on “Repair”.
● Open a command prompt in your window. To open it, click on
“Start” >> in the search box, type “Run” and hit the “Enter”
key.
● In the Run box, type “CMD” to open Command prompt.
● Copy the path locating your PST file and paste it into your
Command prompt. By doing this, it’ll generate a copy of your
Outlook PST file by name “yourPSTfilename.pst” (same as the
original PST file).
● After that rename the original PST file (you need to rename the
original PST file so that the name of your original PST file and
copied PST file should not be the same).

8. ● Go to your Command prompt window >> type “pst19upg.exe-
newfilename.pst” and hit the “Enter” key.
● After you’ve followed the above steps successfully, it will remove
the password from the PST file and create a fresh password
unprotected PST file.
● After this run the “scanpst.exe” again and click on “Repair” to
start the newly created password free MS Outlook PST file.
● Now start your MS Outlook and check the newly created PST
file.

Outlook ANSI supported PST file (Outlook 2002 and below) but
