2. INTRODUCTION
 Involved in education for more than four decades, Cissy
Lewis served as academic dean, interim head of school,
and head of upper school while at The Castilleja School in
Palo Alto, California. Heavily involved in the community,
Cissy Lewis sat on the board for several area
organizations, one of which included the Grace Cathedral.
An Episcopal church situated on Nob Hill in San
Francisco, Grace Cathedral is the third largest
Episcopalian cathedral in the nation. The cathedral offers
church services daily, and attendees can gaze upon its
beautiful stained-glass windows, check out its two
labyrinths, and enjoy its striking architecture.

3. GRACE CATHEDRAL
 In addition to church services, the Grace Cathedral
hosts a variety of separate events, including music,
art, and yoga. One event, which occurred on June 10
and 11, 2016, featured playwright, activist, and
actress Anna Deavere Smith performing Notes from
the Field: Doing Time in Education. For her
performance, she voiced an inner-city school
principal, Congressman John Lewis, and African-
American novelist James Baldwin, among others.
Accompanied by Marcus Shelby, her performance
included references to cultural experiences, and
sought empathy and compassion from the audience.
