Chuck Loch was dying from Type 2 Diabetes with high blood pressure, blood sugar levels over 300, trouble breathing and walking, and osteoarthritis. He heard a radio program about a Functional Nutrition Program that could reverse diabetes and ordered information packets but did nothing. When back problems brought him to the clinic, he attended a free seminar on reversing diabetes and realized this may be his last chance. He committed to starting the program the following week. In future posts, he will detail his appointments, lifestyle changes, supplements, health complications from diabetes medications, and recovery over weeks as his blood sugar levels normalized and weight decreased to a healthy level.
1. HOW I BEAT DIABETES - A first-person patient blog by Chuck Loch
Post 1 - May 21, 2013
Eight months ago I was dying from Type 2 Diabetes. I had high blood pressure and blood sugar levels
in the mid 300s. At 6’2” my weight hovered around 250. I had trouble breathing and walking more
than a hundred yards. My metabolic syndrome belly made me look pregnant in my 9th
month. Oh, and
I also had osteo-arthritis in all major joints.
One Saturday afternoon in August of last year, I heard Dr. Jeffrey James (founder of the West Side
Health center) talking on a local radio station about his Functional Nutrition Program to reverse Type 2
Diabetes. It got my attention. I offered hope for saving my life.
That Monday, I called Dr. James and ordered his information packet. It came in a few days and I set it
aside. The second, third and fourth packets came at regular intervals. I set them all aside too. I did
nothing. Didn’t even read them. I was stubborn – I didn’t want to upset my life with some demanding
new diet and medical regimen. And I was afraid of the unknown.
Within a few weeks, I discovered the intense pain of Sciatica caused by three ruptured discs. I went to
Dr. James’ center for relief. Back problems were also a treatment specialty of his. While in his
offices, on a whim (but probably out of unconscious hope and self-preservation), I signed up for his
next free seminar on reversing diabetes.
On the day of the seminar, myself and eight others – also dying (it was a reception area of walking
corpses) - filed into his office for a presentation on the disease and an overview of his Functional
Nutrition Program. He also gave us more material to read, which I promptly did, and an estimate of
the cost of the Program, which was more than I expected. But, on the other hand, he offered me life.
During the seminar, something clicked. Dr. James reviewed the clinical findings that Type 2 Diabetes
can’t be reversed by conventional medical treatment. I realized this might be my last chance.
In a daze, I committed – to an appointment the following week – with Dr. James – to begin the
program.
Over the course of the Program, I often wondered what happened to the other people who were there
that afternoon but who didn’t make an appointment.
In future posts, I’ll take you through my first appointment with Dr. James – what I learned about the
financing, and from the handouts, the extensive pre-testing and post testing, the lifestyle changes based
on the test results, the functional nutrition diet, the food and glucose diary, the physical exercise, the
nutritional supplements, the health complications I suffered, including my sciatica-ruptured discs, 2
nasal hemorrhages, diarrhea, peripheral edema – caused not by the Program, but by side effects of my
diabetes medications which by then were no longer needed), and my bi-weekly appointments at West
Side Health.
I’ll also take you week by week through my recovery and healing, until now when my daily blood
sugar levels average below normal and my weight is 220. This morning, on awakening, my blood
sugar level was 89.
