DALLAS BLOOD
By
Christopher P. Nichols
The story takes place in Dallas Texas during 1938. It involves a
family of artists; the protagonist named Timothy Sart is a twenty-five
year old director at the Dallas Civic Theatre. His older brother is a
painter. Both brothers are in the process of finding new ways to
express themselves in their separate creative mediums. Timothy Sart is
directing the first U.S. production of Federico Lorca’s Blood Wedding
and has great doubts about his ability to direct this complicated
play, but he must because it is scheduled to open in six weeks. While
going through the new ideas he needs to develop a revolutionary style
of improvisational directing, he meets a young French girl, Claire
Levant, who is staying with his brother and his wealthy fiancé. The
whole family becomes involved in the production as Timothy and Claire
Levant fall in love.
The play ends up being a terrific success, but Claire must leave
him and join her family in California because of old world traditions.
Their building relationship is described through every emotion and
sexually awakening experience.
In the review of Blood Wedding in the Dallas Morning News, the
famous theatre critic, John Rosenfield, refers to the family of
artists as the DallasSarts. The mother is a painter and the father a
furniture designer.
Tims’s success from Blood Wedding rewards him with an opportunity
to direct another Lorca play at the University Of New Mexico.
Tim accepts and travels first to Santa Fe with an actress, Liza
Farquar, from his play who becomes his lover, but within weeks she
disappears mysteriously. He spends his summer in Taos at his future
sister-in-law’s house. Tim pines for Claire even though there is
little chance of their being reunited. He moves to Albuquerque to
start work. In Los Angeles, a matchmaker is changing Claire’s life,
but not for the better because of her love for Tim.
Tim accepts his loss of Claire but keeps up a communication with
Claire through the mail. They express their love for each other, but
Claire in accepting her fate, tells Tim to go on with his life. He
soon meets a young Hispanic Archeologist, Anjelica, at the university.
They develop a loving relationship knowing they have no future because
of Claire and Anjelica’s travels to distant archeological sites. After
many difficulties, the second Lorca production is another success.
While on tour in Santa Fe at the La Fonda, Timothy encounters some
Dallas friends who reveal why Liza disappeared, She had used Timothy
2. to get pregnant. Timothy accepts an offer to stay and work in the
University Drama Dept. Anjelica takes him on a revelatory and sensual
camping trip. While spending his Christmas vacation in Taos, Tim finds
out he must travel to California and rescue Claire from an abusive
family situation. She has been very sick from depression and a
shocking miscarriage.
Claire’s father follows them to Taos causing a confrontation that
brings about his and Anjelica’s death. The novel ends with the
realization that the story in Blood Wedding has affected all their
lives deeply.
