‘Not true organ recipients turn into freaks’
By Eve Sonary Heng
KUCHING: Some people erroneously think that receiving someone else’s organs could transform
them into freaks, when in fact they are given a new lease on life. They could now lead a healthy life,
clarified secretary of Green Ribbon Support Group, Lee Chen Hoe.
The aim of carrying out an
organ transplant was to save
life, Lee said at a press
conference themed ‘The
International Green Ribbon
Health Seminar’ and ‘The
International Singing
Competition Dinner Night’ held
at an Inn here on Wednesday.
Organising chairman Houstan
Law was also present.
Lee was here with four other
representatives from the Green
Ribbon Support Kuala Lumpur
to promote organ donation
awareness to Sarawakians.
He said making a decision to
donate the organs and tissues of a loved one who had just died was not an easy one.
He described organ donation as the gift of one’s body parts after death to help save lives. Organ and
tissue donation are the ultimate humanitarian act of charity, he added.
Commonly transplanted organs are kidney, heart, liver, lungs and pancreas while transplantable
tissues are eyes, bone, skin and heart valves. Thus a single donor can save the lives of a number of
people.
“We know that organ and tissue donation is a subject which raises many questions. We want people
to know that organs and tissues are removed only after brain death has been confirmed by two
registered doctors.
“The process of organ and tissue donation involves a sterile surgical operation undertaken by a
skilled team of surgeons. There is no mutilation or disfigurement of the body. The donor is treated
with the utmost respect and dignity as in any operation,” he said.
Following removal of organs and tissues, the surgical wound would be closed up as in any other
operation.
On whether there was any religious objection, he said all major religions of the world - Islam,
Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism - endorsed organ and tissue donation as the ultimate
act of charity and benevolence.
Law who also spoke at the press conference said the objective of holding the health seminar and
singing competition here was to create awareness and increase the number of organ donors.
Some 60 volunteers were involved in organising the two charitable activities.
“We also organised a get together for transplant patients to know more about the possibility of organ
transplants, and correct misguided beliefs related to organ donation and transplant,” he said.
Law said Augustine Rinyep, a Sarawakian, was the first Malaysian donor of an organ on Dec 15
1975. He was the first living donor to donate his kidney to his brother, and it enabled the latter to live
