This document pays tribute to Dato' Dr. Zaki Morad B Mohamed Zaher for his 30 years of service in developing renal care in Malaysia. When he started, there were no treatment options for renal failure patients, but he established over 300 dialysis centers nationwide, helping over 13,000 patients receive treatment. Though the renal industry is worth billions, he chose to enrich medicine rather than become wealthy. Colleagues praise his vision, integrity, dedication, and passion for improving patient care. They wish him the best in retirement while being proud of his legacy of establishing world-class renal care in Malaysia.

Head, Department of Nephrology
Hospital Kuala Lumpur
A Special Tribute to
“A Man We Admire”
2. Just 15 years ago if someone was
diagnosed with renal failure they
would be told by the doctor that it
was better to go home as no
treatment was available for them.
Thankfully, today about 13,000
renal failure patients in the country
are receiving treatment from more
than 300 dialysis centres all over
Malaysia. Dato’ Zaki was the man
behind this.
Dato Zaki is also one of the reasons why I am still a loyal government
servant till today. I look up to him as a leader with vision and integrity.
Working in an industry worth an estimated two billion ringgit per year he
could have become rich but instead he chose to enrich the discipline of
medicine.
Now, having dedicated 30 years of hardwork, he can be proud to have
left a true legacy “for king and country” and a team of like minded
successors who share his passion and whose love for the nation exceeds
their personal gain.
As his colleague and friend, I can say that it has been truly “service
above self” for Dato’ Zaki for the past 30 years!!
Dato’ Zaki we are proud of you.
Malaysia too is proud to have you as her son!!!

3. I take this opportunity to personally congratulate
Y.Bhg. Dato’ Dr. Zaki Morad Mohd. Zaher for the
completion of his national service to the country and to
the people of Malaysia.
During the 30 years of his tenure as a government
officer in Kuala Lumpur Hospital, he has shown his
loyalty and his dedication. He worked very hard in
providing exemplary services to the patients in need.
He was involved in developing medical services, in
particular developing nephrology services in Kuala
Lumpur Hospital and in the entire country.
His contributions to the medical fraternity in the
country is tremendous. He actively participated in and
is well known among the nephrology societies in this
region.
We wish Y.Bhg. Dato Dr. Zaki and his family the very
best of everything in his retirement. May Allah bless
him and family with good health and happiness always.
Thank you and congratulations for contributing 30
years of excellent service to Kuala Lumpur Hospital.
Dato’ Dr. Azmi Shapie
Director, Kuala Lumpur
Hospital
4. Zaki is a very warm and big hearted and selfless person, always willing to
listen to one’s problems and tries to solve them.
Once I called him regarding my mother’s renal results and treatment. He
listened carefully as usual and promised to sort it out. Only then he said he
was with his critically ill mother and in fact she was drawing her last few
breaths.
I felt so bad that day.
He has been able to get our team working well together because of his
wonderful personality.

10. I am most delighted to write about my
experiences with Y. Bhg Dato Dr Zaki Morad. I can
probably fill a book and many albums but this will be
necessarily short for the so-called ‘scrap book”.
I first met Dato Zaki when I joined the
Institute of Urology & Nephrology around May 1985,
for my training. Since then, Dato Zaki has never ceased
to be a mentor, colleague and friend. Although I was
subsequently seconded back to Universiti Malaysia
Sarawak (UNIMAS) in January 1996, we still keep in
close contact through the many activities, and of course,
through the Internet. Needless to say, I still call upon
him to help with the teaching in UNIMAS as a Visiting
Consultant whenever it can be accommodated to Dato
Zaki’s very busy programme.
Although Dato Zaki is always trying to
oblige, he is certainly a man of strong principles and
wisdom. Therefore, we also had our many “arguments”
e.g. the direction of urology training programmes. We
also have differences of opinion regarding the best
management for some patients. Of course, as
urologists, we object to being regarded as “plumbers”!
We had differences of opinion but his wisdom and
broad experience usually proves him right in the end.

Down memory lane….
11. Dato‘ Zaki is not only of great help to fellow
doctors but also the paramedical staff. Many nurses and
medical assistants had received training in Renal Medicine
through his encouragement and recommendation,
including those from Sarawak. Through his long years of
dedicated services, many patients have not only benefited
from his care, owing their life to him, but have also
become his friends. I know of some patients who have
been treated by him for more than 10 years and would call
him directly whenever they need any special help!
I have no regrets about campaigning for Dato’
Zaki to be elected to the Malaysian Medical Council; he
has been of real help to sort out some registration
problems. Dato Zaki is also credited for starting many
programmes. Although I have listened to many of his
lectures, I am never tired of them because each lecture is
always updated with new practical advice. Of course, I do
not attend his pure nephrology lectures but only those
lectures related to things like clinical research, uro-
nephrology, kidney transplantation and other aspects of
renal replacement therapy.
Dato’ Zaki also set up the renal registry which
is of world class standard. The explosion of haemodialysis
centres in the country can be partly attributed to the efforts
of Dato’ Zaki. I certainly do not wish to see him retire but
rather that he will move onto a new chapter of his life,
doing more good uro-nephrology in Malaysia (including
Sarawak). I also hope to play golf with him again, one
day!

12. Dear Dato’ Zaki,
There are few things that bring satisfaction,
Like joy for a job that's complete.
When you look up and see that it's finished
And you get up and stand on your feet.
You look over the task that you've worked on,
And reflect on the struggles it held
You feel like an axe-wielding woodsman,
Staring at the great tree he just felled.
It must be that way on completion
Of a grand and substantial career.
You can look back at so many victories,
Spanning over so many long years.
In some ways this event is prophetic
A harbinger of things to come
Though if I managed to reach that point too
I might get there feeling very numb!
So we're firm in our hearty acceptance
Of all those things you've seen, been and done
And now that your work days are past you
It's time to get out and have some fun!
But unlike them we're all feeling sorry
That we'll see you much less than before
But you'll be in our thoughts very often
You're a person that's hard to ignore!
Wishing you
all the best!
Happy Retirement!

13. Dear Dato Zaki,
I’d like to thank you very much for giving me, not
once but two chances, to be part of your CRC
family. The first when you wrote me the official
job offer letter and the second when I almost lost
my balance and thought I wanted out.
Despite being a busy man you still found time to
attend to all our small personal needs, like when I
wanted to leave for my hajj pilgrimage. No other
boss I knew would have taken the trouble to give
personal advise let alone buy medication for me
with your own money. You even had time to
listen to our problems, both about work and about
our personal health.
I sometimes wonder how you do this magic of
balancing all your commitments. It still amazes
me how you do this “just on time appearing
acts”at meetings.
Both you and Dr Lim introduced the word
“registry” to my life’s vocabulary. I now know
how passionate you are about registries and for
data and benchmarking.

you two titles; Father of CRC, and Father of

you will always be there for us.
I pray that you will have a smooth transition into your

I find you to be a very nice boss, very
approachable for someone so high up

27. Saya kenal Dato’ Zaki dah lama,
sejak tahun 1977 semasa Dato’
bertugas sebagai MO di Wad 21.
Masa tu saya juga bertugas di situ.
Dato’ memang baik dan peramah, tak pernah
berubah sampai sekarang. Kalau jumpa di mana-
mana pasti bertegur-sapa walaupun dah bergelar
Dato’.
Susah nak cari orang saperti Dato’ dan tingkah
laku ini patut di contohi ramai kerana Dato’ tidak
pernah menyombong diri.
Bila Dato’ dah pencen ni kami terasa kehilangan
yang agak besar. Harap Dato’ janganlah lupa
kan kami staff-staff hospital di sini walau di mana
pun Dato’ pergi selepas ini.

28. Assalamualaikum Dato’ Zaki,
Saya bekerja dengan Dato’ sejak tahun
1989. Masa tu saya tak berapa minat dengan
nephro sebab banyak patient yang terminal tu
kita kena buat LO. Lama kelamaan saya pun
tertarik hati juga mungkin sebab Boss dia
seorang yang dedicated, tegas tapi lembut.
At the same time kadang-kadang dia
kelakar juga. Saya masih teringat semasa
Dato’ beri talk pasal needling. Masa tu Dato’
buat joke pasal how excellent staff HDU buat
pricking dan tunjuk macam mana gaya
mereka buat tanpa pandang tempat cucuk
pun.
Saya boleh ingat sampai sekarang macam
mana Dato’ punya reaksi. Walaupun Dato’
tegas, tapi masih fatherly juga to the staff dan
paramedics di IUN.
Akhir sekali saya nak ucapkan terima
kasih pada Dato’ kerana penyokong saya
semasa saya mengalami beberapa masalah
dulu.

you during the time you served in the

Even in that short time your leadership
capabilities shone through. I could see

made a lot of initiatives that was helpful
for the hospital. When I worked with you
in a project for CRC, I found you to be
transparent and fair in your judgments.

many special qualities that it is difficult to
mention them all, so I’ll just mention two:
1. He has extremely high principles,
particularly when it comes to integrity and
fair play. This is perhaps one of the reasons
he is so highly admired and respected.
2. Despite being a Dato’ and such a
distinguished figure in medical circles, he is
always approachable and strikes up

44. Semasa pemindahan ginjal pertama saya pada 1991 gagal, saya rasa begitu
kecewa.

Dato’ pernah memarahi saya sebab terlalu takut nak hidup saperti normal.

46. Seasons in the Sun
1. Goodbye to you our trusted friend
We've known each other for so many years
Since those training days of yore
We progress from grand ward rounds
To research and CPGs.
2. Goodbye Dato’, we'll miss your wit
Every time we come to IUN
We've learnt so many things from you
How to work and how to play
How to budget, how to spend.
Chorus 1:
We had joy, we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
May the joy that you gave
Bless you ten-fold in return.
3. Thank you dear friend for guiding us
We were the small fry of the 'family'
You always thought of us as well
Gave us chances, gave us voice
Put our feet back on the ground.
4. Good luck Dato’, enjoy your golf
No need to rush from clinic to the course
No more last minute slides to make
Time for doing what you want
Smell the flowers, count the stars.
Chorus 2
We had joy, we had fun,
We had seasons in the sun
May the memories we share
Keep you smiling all the time. (x2)
47. But in our minds we know they will still live on and on
But Those training days of giving talks and nervousness
are gone how do we thank someone who has taken us
through renal training
It isn't easy but we'll try
If you wanted the sky we would write across the sky in
letters that would soar a thousand feet high
To sir with love
To Sir with Love
The time has come for closing books and long last looks
must end
And as you leave we know that we are losing our best
friend
A friend who taught us right from wrong and weak from
strong, that's a lot to learn
What, what can we give you in return
If you wanted the moon, we would try to make a start but
we would rather you let us give our hearts
To sir with love.
48. At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark
from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep
