2. Initial Thoughts
Star Wars, The Witcher (Games) , Studio Ghibli, Dark Souls (Game), Thor, Guardians of the Galaxy,
Ori and the Blind Forest, Legend of Zelda, Hercules, Little Mermaid, Peter Pan
3. Star Wars: Crait• Small mineral planet covered in Salt Crystals, with deep red soil
• Salty seas, Canyons, Mountains, Salt Flats, Breathable Atmosphere, Mild Climate
• It’s in the Outer Rim Territories, a remote part of the Star Wars Galaxy, lots of natural looking and low populated planets
• Other than a Rebel base, the only other things on Crait are large mineral mines and the Vulptex
• The Vulptex used to look like normal foxes but evolved over the years and grew more crystals along with the planet. Can assume the planet used to be like any other planet
4. Set Design on Crait
• Used to house a rebel alliance outpost during the early rebellion against the galactic empire, it was abandoned and then revisited in The
Last Jedi and used as a base again by the Resistance
• The outpost was rough and didn’t have much in it. Mostly underground and had a massive metal door to protect from attacks, and lots
of trenches for the Battle of Crait (The last Jedi)
6. Initial Ideas
Considered different options for the Story
Sith Base – Colours make sense but not for Sith to be there
Rebel Base – Colours seem too dark, red associated with Sith and ‘Dark Side’
Jedi Temple – Colours seem to dark, already a Jedi temple in Crystal caves (Ilum)
Initial Thoughts on the Structure
Having a structure that has a visible top section and bottom section, then a joining spiral
staircase in the caves. Would reflect how tall the mountains are and utilise that space
8. Top Section
Experimenting with Star Wars symbols and whether they could be incorporated into
the floor plan of the top section
Eg. Rebel alliance, Jedi Order
9. Trying to figure out what it would look like on the outside – wasn’t really working, looked out of place, too much going on
10. Testing one of the designs - Felt out of place, too symmetrical, looked more like an ice palace, didn’t fit in with surroundings
11. Reflecting on previous Ideas
- Went back to initial drawing of a crystal, made it look a
bit more like a building
- Changed orientation and where on the mountain
- Then looked back at signature Star Wars features eg.
Landing platform, Walkway with Statues, Open platform
at the top
13. Revising Ideas
• None of the designs were working
• Didn’t have a solid backstory so I felt like that was effecting the design
• A lot of the design process in Star Wars is establishing a some kind of backstory behind a place and everything inside
it
• Started thinking of my design linked with a story – This would help with the storyboarding but also to create a
feeling in the concept art and the design
Who would be exploring this space, why are they there and when is it set?
Backstory would take place:
Between the Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker – Lots happened during this time that wasn’t shown in the films, but
published in a series of comics called ‘Journey to Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker’ – The time where the resistance were
looking for allies, and would search the galaxy for anyone to join the Resistance (the side of Rey, Fin, Luke etc)
Who is in the space and Why:
Keep it simple, a person/scout from the resistance. He’s there because they’ve heard a rumour about a group of
Mandalorian in hiding and are sending a scout to feedback information. The Mandalorian have a massive history and
are known for being warriors so having them on the Resistance side would be a massive advantage
14. History of The Mandalorians
Three main Mandalorian Groups throughout history:
Imperial Mandalorian – want a return to their warrior roots and side with the Imperials
Rebel Mandalorian – Passivists/New Mandalorians that want diplomacy and non-violent
way of life
Independent Mandalorian – Choose not to side with anyone, probably a mix of different
backgrounds
15. Context
After the battle of Crait (Last Jedi) – A large portion of the planet looked like an
abandoned battlefield with weapons, ships etc. scattered everywhere on the
Salt Flats
The only structures left on Crait are the remains of the Resistance Base, and an
ancient Jedi Temple
This Jedi Temple has been taken over by a group of Mandalorian, where they
are starting to rebuild a city within the Crystal Caves of Crait to avoid the
conflict between The Empire and The Resistance
16. Set Design – Jedi Temple
Background
• There are almost 50 Jedi Temples across the Galaxy and they are used for a number of things such as:
A place to train Storing Artefacts Library Meditation Refuge
• None of them use any specific Architecture, but they always fit in with their surroundings and Planet they’re on
• Some key features of Jedi Temples:
Huge Statues (usually Jedi) Large Scale Meditation platform Columns Exaggerated Light Source
Coruscant IlumFirst Temple on Anch-To Eedit Temple on Devaron
