Further Institutional
Research
ITunes and YouTube
statistics.
ITunes
From my further research I have found that ITunes had a drop in sales in 2014, I think this
is a result of more apps being available that involve free music that you can download and
listen to without using the internet or having to buy every song.
Free music apps such as ITube and Playtube have become very popular with teenagers as
they won’t have the money to buy their artists albums or songs. These apps benefit the
listeners but do not benefit the artists as they are not getting any money from their songs
being downloaded and listened to. As you can see form the logo of play tube it is similar
to YouTube therefore it will automatically be appealing to the massive fan base of
YouTube.
YouTube
YouTube has had a viewer increase of 40% since March 2014 which tells us more and more people are attracted to the
free viewing of music videos.
YouTube overall reaches more 18-34 and 18-49 year-olds than any cable network in the United States. This gives me
more of an idea of who would be viewing my music video if I decided to distribute it on YouTube.
I also found out that 80% of YouTube views are from outside the U.S so this means I will be able to target a more global
and national audience around the world.
As a result of YouTube been available in 76 different languages (this cover 95% of the internet population) makes it a
more suitable distributor as people who speak different languages yet like The 1975 can access my video easier as they
will understand what it is.
YouTube has over a billion users, this is almost a third of all people on the Internet and every day these people are
watching hundreds of millions of hours of YouTube videos which generates billions of views.
Summary
Overall YouTube has had a massive rise in popularity where as
ITunes has had a decrease. This statistics research has backed
up my original decision of using YouTube as my distributor as
the rise of the internet is making YouTube the ‘watering hole’
for watching and consuming music videos.
