2. A poster is any piece of printed paper designed
to be attached to a wall or vertical surface.
Typically posters include both textual and
graphic elements, although a poster may be
either wholly graphical or wholly
text. Posters are designed to be both eye-
catching and informative. Posters may be used
for many purposes.

There should be balance and simplicity.
Deciding where you want to add the graphics, photographs,
graphs, etc.
Do not try to present too much detail. Less more.
Leaving enough white space-don’t clutter the poster, it
should have a clean and simple layout.
Provide your name and details for people that might want to
discuss it with you.
Information should flow (viewing sequence) by column or by
row, as in the following example in the Next slide.

9. Choose colour that complements each
other. Certain colours like, certain
yellows, etc. are difficult to see and read.
Text and background colour should
complement each other. Make sure your
foreground colour (text) is clear and soft
on the eyes when combined with the
background colour.

10. Text size and font type are very
important aspects when designing
posters. They will determine whether
your audience will able to read your
poster ease. If not, your hard work was
for nothing.
Use font such as, Arial, Georgia,
Calibri, etc.

12. It is not easy to read that words that are in capital
letters, e.g. COMMUNICATION STYLES vs.
Communication styles.
To attract your audience, they must be able to read
your poster from a distance(1-3m), therefore font
size is extremely important. These are
recommended font sizes to use:
Main title 100 points At least 4cm high.
Subheadings 50 points Between 1.5-2cm high.
Body text 25 points Between 0.5-1cm high.

13. Photographs OR a good quality scan;
-take the photograph with a digital camera and work
with a digital image instead of scanned pictures.
Diagrams/Graphics Design the diagram with a
software package that has been designed for
graphics and diagrams, such as
-Corel Presentations, CorelDraw, Photoshop, etc.
