1. Cover Letter Chané Du Toit PRC 3209558
In the following cover letter of my work and life experiences I hope that my perseverance,
diligence, leadership skills and passion for children and their wellbeing is evident. Firstly a brief
description of my tertiary education, secondly my experience within the psychology field and
some contributing external experience.
My Tertiary Education
BA (GEN) in Psychology and communications – UNISA University of South Africa
BA HONS Psychology – NMMU Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University
BPSYC accreditation - UNISA
Research Exposure
After I had completed my honors I sought advice from my lecturer and decided to do my BPSYC
accreditation through UNISA to achieve a full year of Trauma based counseling experience at
Rape Crisis Center Port Elizabeth. In that same year I applied for my MA in research, where in I
completed a thesis on the efficiency of the MMPI-2 being used as a primary measure for Post-
Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and what components of the test would be most applicable to
the diagnosis of PTSD.
Unfortunately after my second year of research I had to put my MA on hold and could not
present my final Thesis or have any of my articles evaluated for publication.
Scholastic Exposure
During my honors year I assisted in a Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Psychology
center contract for school readiness testing where I and several others delivered scholastic tests,
scored the tests but did not further evaluation into the results.
Counseling Exposure
During 19 July – 27 July 2012 I volunteered on the Phelophepa Heath Care train where we lived
on the train and stopped for short periods (a day or two) in rural areas with very poor health care.
We provided counseling for all ages with use of translators. We were also sent out to schools into
each location where we gave workshops on a variety of issues such as drugs abuse, safe sex,
abuse, bullying and more. I found that I had a personal preference to the workshops as I loved
the overwhelming hours of research we had to put in and I enjoyed the group environment. I
found the teaching and assigned topic aspect appealing for the workshops.
During Feb – June 2012 I attended 2 x 8 week Life Line courses in Port Elizabeth. The first a
Personal Growth Course and the second a Counseling Skills Course.
Trauma Based Counseling Experience
March –November 2012 to qualify for my BPSYC accreditation through UNISA I had to
complete a year unpaid internship within the field of trauma.
I selected to counsel at Rape Crisis Center where we were counseling Rape survivors from ages
16-70 that arrived at Dora Nginza Government hospital where the police would bring the
2. survivors directly after the rape has been reported. We received regular debriefing with our head
of counseling and supervisor. We dealt with issues of rape syndrome, HIV and ARV training,
drug addiction and assisted in connecting our clients to the appropriate help.
We developed, researched and ran an 8 week Rape survivor support workshop where we held 1
workshop a week with topics including legal matters, a pastor whom is a motivational speaker, a
self-defense workshops, a day of personal growth and sharing, HIV and AIDS.
Hiv/Aids Exposure
Completed a 6 month theoretical course in HIV/AIDS Care and Counseling through UNISA in
2008. Then during my 1 year internship at Rape Crisis Center in 2012 I was exposed and many
theory workshops and training in HIV and AIDS care, Mother to child transmission, ARV use
and side effects.
Youth And Cross-Cultural Exposure
From September 2013 – September 2015 I traveled to both Phuket and China training in
Montessori child development methods and working in one of the top 0-3 year’s old Montessori
Early Childhood education schools in Beijing and Baoding. I also traveled and worked in Phuket
Thailand and Shenzhen China to travel and gain some life experience. In both Phuket and
Shenzhen I work with children 3-12 years of age. In our training I had the opportunity to present
a workshop on positive parenting the parents at our school.
I am confident in my ability to contribute to the success of your company, and look forward to
taking my application a step further at an interview.
Yours faithfully
