How many villages are surrounded by their very own prehistoric stone circle?
Avebury is special -Much of the village is encircled by the prehistoric monument
complex also known as Avebury.
The village of Avebury in Wiltshire has given it’s name to one of the greatest
stone circles in the United Kingdom. The village is located a few miles away from the
Ridgeway and in close proximity to Silbury Hill and many other ancient places.
Avebury, located about 28 miles from Salisbury or 20 miles from Castle Combe, is
fascinating. Now in the care of England's National Trust, Avebury contains three stone
circles. One huge outer ring, about a quarter of a mile across, and two smaller inner
rings of standing stones that date back nearly 5000 years ago.
Avebury is part of an extraordinary set of Neolithic and Bronze Age ceremonial
sites that seemingly formed a vast sacred landscape.
Although the population of the area goes back millennia the actual village of
Avebury did not commence until Saxon times and was originally built to the west of the
present village. Prior to the Domesday Book it was called Kennet. The name is retained
by the River Kennet.
