1. What we can do to be fair when we interview
It is illegal for an employer to treat a person unfairly when they
apply for a job because of their -
• age,
• disability,
• race, (skin colour or nationality)
• belief, (religion or faith)
• sexual orientation (being attracted to the opposite sex/ same sex
or both)
• gender (man/ woman/ trans)
• You must ask all the candidates the same set questions
(you can prompt people but someone needs to write
notes about what you said)
• Questions must only be about the person’s ability to do
the job.
• At least 1 person should take notes of what people say
in their interview. The organisation needs to keep
them.
• Allow everyone you interview the same amount of
time
• Take pictures of people so you remember who they
are
• If someone doesn’t understand a question you can
ask it in a different way
• Mark the interviews straight away

2. • Keep the reasons why someone got or didn’t get the
job. If someone didn’t get the job you need to keep
the records for a year. If someone got the job you
keep them the whole time they are employed.
• Ask questions about disability only after you have
offered them the job
