Evidence the geographical distribution of the
cases of children in Bogotá with BD between
2015 and 2016 from the National Surveillance
System (SIVIGILA by its acronym in Spanish)
using GIS. Perform a cartographic
representation of the cases found and compare
it with international data.
Addresses from the BD database of SIVIGILA
were verified using two mapping and spatial
analysis software packages (health department
geocodes and Geosbis 1.0). Only the cases of BD
corresponding to the exact predialand that were
able to be linked with the national database
Unique Registry of Affiliates (RUAF by its
acronym in Spanish) were selected. Once the
places of birth were established, the official
information of the Health Secretary of Colombia
(SDS by its acronym in Spanish) was consulted
to establish the coordinates of each health care
institution of birth. The euclidean distance
between these two points was calculated in km
with the coordinates from the health care
institution of birth to the residency.
Twenty-one cases of BD were geocoded in
exact predial and were able to be linked with
the RUAF database from 2015 to 2016. A map
of the euclidean distances between the health
care institution of birth and the residency was
made. A minimum distance of 0.46 km, a
maximum distance of 15.84 km, and an
average distance of 7.71 km were calculated.
GIS have become very useful in the medical
Uield, especially in public health and in our case
for the surveillance BD. There is heterogeneity
among the distances between the health care
institution of birth and patient residency in
Bogota compared to international literature
where it has been reported that approximately
70% of patients lived less than 5 km from the
hospital. Although the data are scarce, we
intend to continue using the GIS with our
database to identify and map BD in Bogota and
other cities in Colombia.

BD surveillance and follow-up is important to
see how BD distribute across time and to make
public politics to improve accessibility to
strategies that increase the quality of life of
patients.
