1. Every Grain
of Rice
By Fuchsia Dunlop for Bloomsbury
Publishing.
Cover and spreads from the ultimate
Chinese cookbook.
I recreated traditional Chinese
patterns for the cover and 16 title
pages using grains of rice to represent
the idea that each single element is
essential for the greater good.

20. Alternative cover concept
This cover option has rice shaped holes
through the cover, revealing that there is an
image underneath on the endpapers.
The whole image is then revealed when
you open the book. Shown here is a fishing
image. The idea is that the culture and
landscape of the Lower Yangtze region are
encapsulated in Fuchsia’s authentic recipes.

Alternative cover concept
A beautiful Chinese blue combined
with simplified imagery of ingredients,
reminiscent of screen printing or papercuts.
The cover could be printed on uncoated
paper which would contrast with silver foil
block type.
This illustration style could also be carried
through the book on the title pages.
