Newspapers have an acid within the
paper that makes it turn yellow as it ages
or is exposed to weather conditions such
as sunlight. Use this recipe to keep old
newspaper clippings from turning yellow.
It works because the magnesium carbide
neutralizes the acid in the paper.
• Dissolve a milk of magnesia tablet in a quart of water;
let it stand overnight.
• Pour the mixture into a container large enough for the
sheets of newspaper
or clippings you want to preserve.
• Put the clippings in so they’re com-
pletely covered by the liquid.
• Let them soak for an hour, then take
them out and pat them dry.
They will remain crisp and
new for a long time to come.
