THE LIGHTING OF NEW FIRE
In the darkness, fire is kindled; after which the Celebrant may address the
people in these or similar words
P Dear friends in Christ: On this most holy night, in which our
Lord Jesus passed over from death to life, the Church invites
her members, dispersed throughout the world, to gather in vigil
and prayer. For this is the Passover of the Lord, in which, by
hearing his Word and celebrating his Sacraments, we share in his
victory over death.
P Let us pray.
PRAYER FOR LIGHT
P O God, through your Son you have bestowed upon your people
the brightness of your light: Sanctify this new fire, and grant that
in this Paschal feast we may so burn with heavenly desires, that
with pure minds we may attain to the festival of everlasting light;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
C Amen.
The Celebrant lights the Paschal Candle from the flame. If there is a procession,
it follows.

It is customary that the Paschal Candle burn at all services
from Easter Day through the Day of Pentecost.
P Let us hear the record of God’s saving deeds in history, how he
saved his people in ages past; and let us pray that our God will
bring each of us to the fullness of redemption.
FIRST READING
Genesis 1:1-2:2 (JB)
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the
earth was a formless void, there was darkness over the deep, and
God’s spirit hovered over the water.
God said, ‘Let there be light’, and there was light. God saw that light
was good, and God divided light from darkness. God called light
‘day’, and darkness he called ‘night’. Evening came and morning
came: the first day.
God said, ‘Let there be a vault in the waters to divide the waters in
two’. And so it was. God made the vault, and it divided the waters
above the vault from the waters under the vault. God called the
vault ‘heaven’. Evening came and morning came: the second day.
TRIDUUM— GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER — page 8
God said, ‘Let the waters under heaven come together into a single
mass, and let dry land appear’. And so it was. God called the dry
land ‘earth’ and the mass of waters ‘seas’, and God saw that it was
good.
God said, ‘Let the earth produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants,
and fruit trees bearing fruit with their seed inside, on the earth’. And
so it was. The earth produced vegetation: plants bearing seed in
their several kinds, and trees bearing fruit with their seed inside in
their several kinds. God saw that it was good. Evening came and
morning came: the third day.
God said, ‘Let there be lights in the vault of heaven to divide day
from night, and let them indicate festivals, days and years. Let them
be lights in the vault of heaven to shine on the earth.’ And so it was.
God made the two great lights: the greater light to govern the day,
the smaller light to govern the night, and the stars. God set them in
the vault of heaven to shine on the earth, to govern the day and the
night and to divide light from darkness. God saw that it was good.
Evening came and morning came: the fourth day.
God said, ‘Let the waters teem with living creatures, and let birds fly
above the earth within the vault of heaven’. And so it was. God
created great sea-serpents and every kind of living creature with
which the waters teem, and every kind of winged creature. God saw
that it was good. God blessed them, saying, ‘Be fruitful, multiply,
and fill the waters of the seas; and let the birds multiply upon the
earth’. Evening came and morning came: the fifth day.
God said, ‘Let the earth produce every kind of living creature: cattle,
reptiles, and every kind of wild beast’. And so it was. God made
every kind of wild beast, every kind of cattle, and every kind of land
reptile. God saw that it was good.
God said, ‘Let us make man in our own image, in the likeness of
ourselves, and let them be masters of the fish of the sea, the birds of
heaven, the cattle, all the wild beasts and all the reptiles that crawl
upon the earth’.
God created man in the image of himself, in the image of God he
created him, male and female he created them.
TRIDUUM— GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER — page 9
God blessed them, saying to them, ‘Be fruitful, multiply, fill the
earth and conquer it. Be masters of the fish of the sea, the birds of
heaven and all living animals on the earth.’ God said, ‘See, I give you
all the seed-bearing plants that are upon the whole earth, and all the
trees with seed-bearing fruit; this shall be your food. To all wild
beasts, all birds of heaven and all living reptiles on the earth I give
all the foliage of plants for food.’ And so it was. God saw all he had
made, and indeed it was very good. Evening came and morning
came: the sixth day.
Thus heaven and earth were completed with all their array. On the
seventh day God completed the work he had been doing. He rested
on the seventh day after all the work he had been doing.

Genesis 22:1-18 (JB)
It happened some time later that God put Abraham to the test.
‘Abraham, Abraham’ he called. ‘Here I am’ he replied. ‘Take your
son,’ God said ‘your only child Isaac, whom you love, and go to the
land of Moriah. There you shall offer him as a burnt offering, on a
mountain I will point out to you.’
Rising early next morning Abraham saddled his ass and took with
him two of his servants and his son Isaac. He chopped wood for the
TRIDUUM— GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER — page 11
burnt offering and started on his journey to the place God had
pointed out to him. On the third day Abraham looked up and saw
the place in the distance. Then Abraham said to his servants, ‘Stay
here with the donkey. The boy and I will go over there; we will
worship and come back to you.’
Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering, loaded it on Isaac,
and carried in his own hands the fire and the knife. Then the two of
them set out together. Isaac spoke to his father Abraham, ‘Father’
he said. ‘Yes, my son’ he replied. ‘Look,’ he said ‘here are the fire
and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?’
Abraham answered, ‘My son, God himself will provide the lamb for
the burnt offering’. Then the two of them went on together.
When they arrived at the place God had pointed out to him,
Abraham built an altar there, and arranged the wood. Then he
bound his son Isaac and put him on the altar on top of the wood.
Abraham stretched out his hand and seized the knife to kill his son.
But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven. ‘Abraham,
Abraham’ he said. ‘I am here’ he replied. ‘Do not raise your hand
against the boy’ the angel said. ‘Do not harm him, for now I know
you fear God. You have not refused me your son, your only son.’
Then looking up, Abraham saw a ram caught by its horns in a bush.
Abraham took the ram and offered it as a burnt-offering in place of
his son. Abraham called this place ‘The Lord Provides’, and hence
the saying today: On the mountain the Lord provides.
The angel of the Lord called Abraham a second time from heaven.
‘I swear by my own self – it is the Lord who speaks – because you
have done this, because you have not refused me your son, your
only son, I will shower blessings on you, I will make your
descendants as many as the stars of heaven and the grains of sand
on the seashore. Your descendants shall gain possession of the gates
of their enemies. All the nations of the earth shall bless themselves
by your descendants, as a reward for your obedience.’

PSALM: Psalm 15:5,8-11
R Preserve me, God, I take refuge in you.
O Lord, it is you who are my portion and cup;
it is you yourself who are my prize.
I keep the Lord ever in my sight:
since he is at my right hand, I shall stand firm.
R Preserve me, God, I take refuge in you.
And so my heart rejoices, my soul is glad;
even my body shall rest in safety.
For you will not leave my soul among the dead,
nor let your beloved know decay.
R Preserve me, God, I take refuge in you.
You will show me the path of life,
the fullness of joy in your presence,
at your right hand happiness for ever.
R Preserve me, God, I take refuge in you.

God, world without end. Amen.

Exodus 14:15-15:1 (JB)
The Lord said to Moses, ‘Why do you cry to me so? Tell the sons of
Israel to march on. For yourself, raise your staff and stretch out
your hand over the sea and part it for the sons of Israel to walk
through the sea on dry ground. I for my part will make the heart of
TRIDUUM— GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER — page 13
the Egyptians so stubborn that they will follow them. So shall I win
myself glory at the expense of Pharaoh, of all his army, his chariots,
his horsemen. And when I have won glory for myself, at the
expense of Pharaoh and his chariots and his army, the Egyptians
will learn that I am the Lord.’ Then the angel of God, who marched
at the front of the army of Israel, changed station and moved to
their rear. The pillar of cloud changed station from the front to the
rear of them, and remained there. It came between the camp of the
Egyptians and the camp of Israel. The cloud was dark, and the night
passed without the armies drawing any closer the whole night long.
Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. The Lord drove back the
sea with a strong easterly wind all night, and he made dry land of the
sea. The waters parted and the sons of Israel went on dry ground
right into the sea, walls of water to right and to left of them. The
Egyptians gave chase: after them they went, right into the sea, all
Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots, and his horsemen. In the morning
watch, the Lord looked down on the army of the Egyptians from
the pillar of fire and of cloud, and threw the army into confusion.
He so clogged their chariot wheels that they could scarcely make
headway. ‘Let us flee from the Israelites,’ the Egyptians cried ‘the
Lord is fighting for them against the Egyptians!’ ‘Stretch out your
hand over the sea,’ the Lord said to Moses ‘that the waters may flow
back on the Egyptians and their chariots and their horsemen.’
Moses stretched out his hand over the sea and, as day broke, the sea
returned to its bed. The fleeing Egyptians marched right into it, and
the Lord overthrew the Egyptians in the very middle of the sea. The
returning waters overwhelmed the chariots and the horsemen of
Pharaoh’s whole army, which had followed the Israelites into the
sea; not a single one of them was left. But the sons of Israel had
marched through the sea on dry ground, walls of water to right and
to left of them. That day, the Lord rescued Israel from the
Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians lying dead on the shore.
Israel witnessed the great act that the Lord had performed against
the Egyptians, and the people venerated the Lord; they put their
faith in the Lord and in Moses, his servant.
It was then that Moses and the sons of Israel sang this song in
honour of the Lord:

Isaiah 54:5-14 (JB)
For now your creator will be your husband,
his name, the Lord of Hosts;
your redeemer will be the Holy One of Israel,
he is called the God of the whole earth.
Yes, like a forsaken wife, distressed in spirit,
the Lord calls you back.
Does a man cast off the wife of his youth?
says your God.
I did forsake you for a brief moment,
but with great love will I take you back.
In excess of anger, for a moment
I hid my face from you.
But with everlasting love I have taken pity on you,
says the Lord, your redeemer.
I am now as I was in the days of Noah
when I swore that Noah’s waters
should never flood the world again.
So now I swear concerning my anger with you
and the threats I made against you;
for the mountains may depart,
the hills be shaken,
but my love for you will never leave you
and my covenant of peace with you will never be shaken,
says the Lord who takes pity on you.

Unhappy creature, storm-tossed, disconsolate,
see, I will set your stones on carbuncles
and your foundations on sapphires.
I will make rubies your battlements,
your gates crystal,
and your entire wall precious stones.
Your sons will all be taught by the Lord.
The prosperity of your sons will be great.
You will be founded on integrity;
remote from oppression, you will have nothing to fear;
remote from terror, it will not approach you.
PSALM: Psalm 30(29):2,4-6,11-13
R I will praise you, Lord, you have rescued me.
I will praise you, Lord, you have rescued me
and have not let my enemies rejoice over me.
O Lord, you have raised my soul from the dead,
restored me to life from those who sink into the grave.
R I will praise you, Lord, you have rescued me.
Sing psalms to the Lord, you who love him,
give thanks to his holy name.
His anger lasts a moment; his favour all through life.
At night there are tears, but joy comes with dawn.
R I will praise you, Lord, you have rescued me.
The Lord listened and had pity.
The Lord came to my help.
For me you have changed my mourning into dancing:
O Lord my God, I will thank you for ever.
R I will praise you, Lord, you have rescued me.

Isaiah 55:1-11 (JB)
Oh, come to the water all you who are thirsty;
though you have no money, come!
Buy corn without money, and eat,
and, at no cost, wine and milk.
Why spend money on what is not bread,
your wages on what fails to satisfy?
Listen, listen to me, and you will have good things to eat
and rich food to enjoy.
Pay attention, come to me;
listen, and your soul will live.
With you I will make an everlasting covenant
out of the favors promised to David.
See, I have made of you a witness to the peoples,
a leader and a master of the nations.
See, you will summon a nation you never knew,
those unknown will come hurrying to you,
for the sake of the Lord your God,
of the Holy One of Israel who will glorify you.
Seek the Lord while he is still to be found,
call to him while he is still near.
Let the wicked man abandon his way,
the evil man his thoughts.
Let him turn back to the Lord who will take pity on him,
to our God who is rich in forgiving;
for my thoughts are not your thoughts,
TRIDUUM— GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER — page 18
my ways not your ways – it is the Lord who speaks.
Yes, the heavens are as high above earth
as my ways are above your ways,
my thoughts above your thoughts.
Yes, as the rain and the snow come down from the heavens and do
not return without watering the earth, making it yield and giving
growth to provide seed for the sower and bread for the eating, so
the word that goes from my mouth does not return to me empty,
without carrying out my will and succeeding in what it was sent to
do.

Baruch 3:9—4:4 (JB)
Listen, Israel, to commands that bring life;
hear, and learn what knowledge means.
Why, Israel, why are you in the country of your enemies,
growing older and older in an alien land,
sharing defilement with the dead,
reckoned with those who go to Sheol?
Because you have forsaken the fountain of wisdom.
Had you walked in the way of God,
you would have lived in peace for ever.
Learn where knowledge is, where strength,
where understanding, and so learn
where length of days is, where life,
where the light of the eyes and where peace.
But who has found out where she lives,
who has entered her treasure house?
But the One who knows all knows her,
he has grasped her with his own intellect,
he has set the earth firm for ever
and filled it with four-footed beasts.
he sends the light – and it goes,
he recalls it – and trembling it obeys;
the stars shine joyfully at their set times:
when he calls them, they answer, ‘Here we are’;
they gladly shine for their creator.
It is he who is our God,
no other can compare with him.
He has grasped the whole way of knowledge,
and confided it to his servant Jacob,
to Israel his well-beloved;
so causing her to appear on earth
and move among men.
This is the book of the commandments of God,
the Law that stands for ever;

those who keep her live,
those who desert her die.
Turn back, Jacob, seize her,
in her radiance make your way to light:
do not yield your glory to another,
your privilege to a people not your own.
Israel, blessed are we:
what pleases God has been revealed to us.
PSALM: Psalm 19(18):8-11
R You have the message of eternal life, O Lord.
The law of the Lord is perfect,
it revives the soul.
The rule of the Lord is to be trusted,
it gives wisdom to the simple.
R You have the message of eternal life, O Lord.
The precepts of the Lord are right,
they gladden the heart.
The command of the Lord is clear,

R You have the message of eternal life, O Lord.

Ezekiel 36:16-28 (JB)
The word of the Lord was addressed to me as follows: ‘Son of man,
the members of the House of Israel used to live in their own land,
but they defiled it by their conduct and actions. I then discharged
my fury at them because of the blood they shed in their land and the
idols with which they defiled it. I scattered them among the nations
and dispersed them in foreign countries. I sentenced them as their
conduct and actions deserved. And now they have profaned my
holy name among the nations where they have gone, so that people
say of them, “These are the people of the Lord; they have been
exiled from his land”. But I have been concerned about my holy
name, which the House of Israel has profaned among the nations
where they have gone. And so, say to the House of Israel, “The
Lord says this: I am not doing this for your sake, House of Israel,
but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among
the nations where you have gone. I mean to display the holiness of
my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, which
you have profaned among them. And the nations will learn that I
am the Lord–it is the Lord who speaks– when I display my holiness
for your sake before their eyes. Then I am going to take you from
among the nations and gather you together from all the foreign
countries, and bring you home to your own land. I shall pour clean
water over you and you will be cleansed; I shall cleanse you of all
your defilement and all your idols. I shall give you a new heart, and
put a new spirit in you; I shall remove the heart of stone from your
bodies and give you a heart of flesh instead. I shall put my spirit in

all standing
P Through the Paschal mystery, dear friends, we are buried with
Christ by Baptism into his death, and raised with him to newness of
life. I call upon you, therefore, now that our Lenten observance is
ended, to renew the solemn promises and vows of Holy Baptism, by
which we once renounced Satan and all his works, and promised to
serve God faithfully in his holy Catholic Church.
RENEWAL OF BAPTISMAL VOWS
P Do you reaffirm your renunciation of evil and renew your
commitment to Jesus Christ?
C I do.
P Do you believe in God the Father?
C I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven
and earth.
P Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?
C I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
TRIDUUM— GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER — page 24
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living
and the dead.
P Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?
C I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.
P Will you continue in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in
the breaking of bread, and in the prayers?
C I will, with God's help.
P Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall
into sin, repent and return to the Lord?
C I will, with God's help.
P Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of
God in Christ?
C I will, with God’s help.
P Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your
neighbor as yourself?
C I will, with God’s help.
P Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and
respect the dignity of every human being?
C I will, with God's help.

Romans 6:3-11
You have been taught that when we were baptized in Christ Jesus
we were baptized in his death; in other words, when we were
baptized we went into the tomb with him and joined him in death,
so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the Father’s glory, we
too might live a new life.
If in union with Christ we have imitated his death, we shall also
imitate him in his resurrection. We must realise that our former
selves have been crucified with him to destroy this sinful body and
to free us from the slavery of sin. When a Christian dies, of course,
he has finished with sin.
But we believe that having died with Christ we shall return to life
with him: Christ, as we know, having been raised from the dead will
never die again. Death has no power over him any more. When he
died, he died, once for all, to sin, so his life now is life with God;
and in that way, you too must consider yourselves to be dead to sin
but alive for God in Christ Jesus.

Luke 24:1-12 (JB) (Cycle C)
P The Lord be with you. C And with thy spirit.
P The Holy Gospel, according to Saint Luke...
As soon as the Gospel is announced all sing the following, making the sign of the
cross with the right thumb upon the forehead, lips and breast successively:
On the first day of the week, at the first sign of dawn, they went to
the tomb with the spices they had prepared. They found that the
stone had been rolled away from the tomb, but on entering
discovered that the body of the Lord Jesus was not there. As they
stood there not knowing what to think, two men in brilliant clothes
suddenly appeared at their side. Terrified, the women lowered their
eyes. But the two men said to them, ‘Why look among the dead for
someone who is alive? He is not here; he has risen. Remember what
he told you when he was still in Galilee: that the Son of Man had to
be handed over into the power of sinful men and be crucified, and
rise again on the third day?’ And they remembered his words.
When the women returned from the tomb they told all this to the
Eleven and to all the others. The women were Mary of Magdala,
Joanna, and Mary the mother of James. The other women with
TRIDUUM— GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER — page 30
them also told the apostles, but this story of theirs seemed pure
nonsense, and they did not believe them.
Peter, however, went running to the tomb. He bent down and saw
the binding cloths but nothing else; he then went back home,
amazed at what had happened.

or
The Easter Homily of Saint John Chrysostom
If any man be devout and loveth God, let him enjoy this fair and
radiant triumphal feast. If any man be a wise servant, let him
rejoicing enter into the joy of his Lord. If any have laboured long in
fasting, let him now receive his recompense. If any have wrought
from the first hour, let him today receive his just reward. If any have
come at the third hour, let him with thankfulness keep the feast. If
any have arrived at the sixth hour, let him have no misgivings;
because he shall in nowise be deprived therefor. If any have delayed
until the ninth hour, let him draw near, fearing nothing. If any have
tarried even until the eleventh hour let him, also, be not alarmed at
his tardiness; for the Lord, who is jealous of his hon our, will accept
the last even as the first; he giveth rest unto him who cometh at the
eleventh hour, even as unto him who hath wrought from the first
hour. And he showeth mercy upon the last, and careth for the first;
and to the one he giveth, and upon the other he bestoweth gifts.
And he both accepteth the deeds, and welcometh the intention, and
honoreth the acts and praiseth the offering.
TRIDUUM— GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER — page 31
Wherefore, enter ye all into the joy of your Lord; and receive ye
your reward, both the first, and likewise the second.
Ye rich and poor together, hold ye high festival. Ye sober and ye
heedless, hon our ye the day. Rejoice today, both ye who have
fasted and ye who have disregarded the fast. The table is full‑laden;
feast ye all sumptuously. The calf is fatted; let no one go hungry
away. Enjoy ye all the feast of faith: Receive ye all the riches of
loving kindness. Let no one bewail his poverty, for the universal
kingdom hath been revealed. Let no one weep for his iniquities, for
pardon hath shone forth from the grave.
Let no one fear death, for the Savior’s death hath set us free. He
that was held prisoner of it, hath annihilated it. By decending into
Hell, he made Hell captive. He angered it when it tasted of his flesh.
And Isaiah, foretelling this, did cry: Hell, said he, was angered, when
it encountered thee in the lower regions. It was angered, for it was
abolished. It was angered, for it was mocked. It was angered, for it
was slain. It was angered, for it was overthrown. It was angered, for
it was fettered in chains. It took a body, and met God face to face.
It took earth, and encountered Heaven. It took that which was seen,
and fell upon the unseen. O Death, where is thy sting? O Hell,
where is thy victory? Christ is risen, and thou art overthrown.
Christ is risen, and the demons are fallen.
Christ is risen, and the Angels rejoice.
Christ is risen, and life reigneth.
Christ is risen, and not one dead remaineth in the grave.
For Christ, being risen from the dead, is become the first‑fruits of
those who have fallen asleep.
To him be glory and dominion unto ages of ages. Amen.

OFFERTORIUM
P The Lord be with you. a And with thy spirit.
A hymn may then be sung while the offering is collected. The following, through
to and including the Lavabo, may be said after or during the hymn. After the
hymn the people are seated.
P From the rising up of the sun even unto the going down of the
same the Lord’s name shall be magnified; and in every place
incense shall be offered unto His name and a pure offering.
There shall be heard in this place the voice of joy and the voice
of gladness, the voice of them that shall bring the sacrifice of

praise into the house of the Lord.
The priest offers the host, saying:
We adore Thee, O God, who art the source of all life and
goodness, and with true and thankful hearts we offer unto Thee
this token of Thine own life-giving gifts bestowed upon us, Thou
who art the giver of all.
He pours wine and a little water into the chalice saying:
According to immemorial custom, we now mix water with this
wine, praying Thee, O Lord, that we may evermore abide in
Christ and He in us.
He offers the chalice, saying:
We offer unto Thee, O Lord, this chalice with joy and gladness;
may the worship which we offer ascend before Thy divine
majesty as a sacrifice, pure and acceptable in Thy sight; through
Christ our Lord.
a Amen.
THE SECOND CENSING
The priest censes the oblations and the altar and then says:
P As this incense rises before Thee, O Lord, so let our prayer be
set forth in Thy sight. Let Thy holy angels encompass Thy
people and breathe forth upon them the spirit of Thy blessing.
As he returns the censer he says:
P May the Lord enkindle within us the fire of His love and the
flame of everlasting charity.
LAVABO
P I will wash my hands in innocency, O Lord: and so will I go to
Thine altar; That I may show the voice of thanksgiving: and tell
of all Thy wondrous works. Lord, I have loved the habitation of
TRIDUUM— GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER — page 34
Thy house: and the place where Thine honour dwelleth. My foot
standeth right: I will praise the Lord in the congregations. Glory
be to the Father and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it
was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be: world without
end. a Amen.
The people now stand.
P We lay before Thee, O Lord, these Thy creatures of bread and
wine, in + token of our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; for
here we offer and present unto Thee ourselves, our souls and
bodies, to be a holy and continual sacrifice unto Thee, that we,
who are very members incorporate in the mystical body of Thy
Son, which is the blessed company of all faithful people, may
hear that His most joyful voice: “Come unto Me, O ye that be
blessed of My Father, and possess the kingdom which is
prepared for you from the beginning of the world,” through the
same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, ever one God throughout all ages
of ages a Amen.
ORATE FRATRES
P Brethren, pray that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to
God the Father almighty.
a May the Lord receive the sacrifice at thy hands and
sanctify our lives in His service.
PRAYER OVER THE FAITHFUL
Almighty God, hear your people who are met this day to celebrate
the glorious resurrection of your Son our Lord; and lead them on
from this festival to eternal gladness, to the joys that have no end;
through our Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and
the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

SECRET COLLECT
Receive, we pray, O Lord, the prayers of your people, together with
the offering of this sacrifice; that this beginning of the Paschal
Mystery, may, by your power, bring us to everlasting salvation;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
The people’s Anglican missal in the American edition (1946), Easter Day, slightly altered
The Canon of the Mass
The people rise.
P
...But chiefly are we bound to praise thee for the glorious
resurrection of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the very
Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us, and hath taken away the
sin of the world; who by his death hath destroyed death, and by his
rising to life again hath won for us everlasting life.
.

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION
P Wherefore, O most loving Father, we Thy servants do pray
Thee, through Jesus Christ, Thy Son, our Lord, to + receive, to
+ purify and to + hallow this oblation which we do make unto
Thee. We desire to offer this holy sacrifice first for Thy holy
Catholic Church; that it may please Thee to grant her peace, to
watch over her, to bring her to unity and to guide her
throughout the world; likewise that it may please Thee to bless
and keep all Thy people, to give them increase of grace to bring
forth the fruits of the spirit, to guide all nations into unity, peace
and concord, and to endue their rulers with wisdom and
understanding.
Especially do we pray for the government of our country; for
Francis, patriarch of the Western Church; for Bartholomaios,
ecumenical patriarch of the Eastern Church; for Gerard and
JĂŒrgen our bishops; for all bishops, clergy and faithful, and for
all present whose faith and devotion are known unto Thee.
We do also call to mind all who in this transitory life are in
trouble, sorrow, need, sickness or any other adversity,
especially... .Likewise do we offer it for all those Thy children
whom it hath pleased Thee to deliver from the burden of the
flesh, especially... that freed from earthly toil and care, they may
enjoy the felicity of Thy presence, evermore praising Thee in
word and deed, O God everlasting, living and true.
[Uniting in this joyful sacrifice with Thy holy church throughout
all the ages, we lift our hearts in adoration to Thee, O God the
Son, consubstantial, co-eternal with the Father, who, abiding
unchangeable within Thyself, didst nevertheless in the mystery
of Thy boundless love and Thine eternal sacrifice breathe forth
Thine own divine life into Thy universe and thus didst offer
Thyself as the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world,
dying in very truth that we might live.
Omnipotent, all-pervading, by that self-same sacrifice Thou dost
continually uphold all creation, resting not by night or day,
working evermore through that most august hierarchy of Thy
glorious saints, who live but to do Thy will as perfect channels
TRIDUUM— GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER — page 38
of Thy wondrous power, to whom we ever offer heartfelt love
and reverence.
Thou, O most dear and holy Lord, hast in Thine ineffable
wisdom ordained for us this blessed sacrament of Thy love, that
in it we may not only commemorate in symbol that Thine
eternal oblation, but verily take part in it and perpetuate thereby
within the limitations of time and space, which veil our earthly
eyes from the excess of Thy glory, the enduring sacrifice by
which the world is nourished and sustained.]
With his hands spread over the offerings, he continues:
Wherefore, O holy Lord, Father almighty, we pray Thee to look
down on and accept these offerings, which we Thy servants and
Thy whole household do make unto Thee, in obedience to the
command of Thy most blessed Son, our Lord Jesus Christ:
which offerings do Thou, O Father, deign with Thy Holy Spirit
and Word to + bless, + approve, and + ratify, that they may
become for us His most precious + Body and + Blood. Who
the day before He suffered took bread into His holy and
venerable hands and, with His eyes lifted up to heaven unto
Thee, God, His almighty Father, giving thanks to Thee, He +
blessed, broke and gave it to His disciples, saying: Take and eat
ye all of this, for
THIS IS MY BODY.
In like manner, after He had supped, taking also this noble
chalice into His holy and venerable hands, again giving thanks
to Thee, He + blessed it and gave it to His disciples saying:
Take and drink ye all of this, for
THIS IS MY BLOOD.
The blood of the new and everlasting covenant, which shall be
shed for you and for all mankind for the remission of sins. As
oft as ye shall do these things, ye shall do them in remembrance
of Me.
TRIDUUM— GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER — page 39
Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we Thy humble
servants, bearing in mind the ineffable sacrifice of Thy Son, the
mystery of His wondrous incarnation, His blessed passion, His
mighty resurrection, and His triumphant ascension, and looking
for His coming again in glory, do here make before Thy divine
majesty the memorial which our Lord hath willed us to make,
and we do offer unto Thee this, the most precious gift which
Thou hast bestowed upon us: this pure + Host, this holy +
Host, this glorious + Host, the holy + Bread of life everlasting,
and the + Chalice of eternal salvation.
And we beseech Thee, O Lord, to send down Thy Holy Spirit
upon these offerings, that He would make this bread the
precious + Body of Thy Christ, and that which is in this Chalice
the precious + Blood of Thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ,
transmuting them by Thy Holy Spirit.
AMEN. AMEN. AMEN.
After a moment of silent adoration, the following verse shall be sung very softly,
all devoutly kneeling:
TRIDUUM— GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER — page 40
P This do we present before Thee in token of our love and of the
perfect devotion and sacrifice of our minds and hearts to Thee;
and we pray that Thou wouldst command Thy holy angel to
bear our oblation to Thine altar on high, there to be offered by
Him who, as the eternal high Priest, forever offers Himself as
the eternal sacrifice.
And as He hath ordained that the heavenly sacrifice shall be
mirrored here on earth through the ministry of mortal men, to
the end that Thy holy people may be knit more closely into
fellowship with Thee, we do pray for Thy servant who ministers
at this altar, that, meetly celebrating the mysteries of the most
holy + Body and + Blood of Thy Son, he may be + filled with
Thy mighty power and blessing.
He makes this last cross upon himself.
Likewise we pray Thee to sanctify Thy people here present with
these Thy heavenly gifts, and through these mysteries do Thou
+ hallow, + quicken, and + bless them, that both in their
hearts and in their lives they may show forth Thy praise and
glorify Thy holy name.
He makes with the Host the sign of the cross three times over the chalice as he
says:
All these things do we ask, O Father, in the name and through
the mediation of Thy most blessed Son, for we acknowledge
and confess with our hearts and lips that + by Him were all
things made, yea all things both in heaven and earth; + with
Him as the indwelling life do all things exist, and + in Him as
the transcendent glory all things live and move and have their
being.
Then horizontally twice between the chalice and his breast.
To whom with Thee, O mighty + Father, in the unity of the
Holy + Spirit, [The priest here holds the Host directly over the chalice,
and raises both to the level of his eyes] be ascribed all honour and
glory, throughout all the ages of ages.
a Amen.
TRIDUUM— GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER — page 41
THE COMMUNION
P Instructed by the words of sacred scripture and following the
tradition of holy church from of old, we now say:
a Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come;
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen
THE COMMEMORATION OF THE SAINTS
P Here do we give unto Thee, O Lord, most high praise and heartfelt
thanks for the wonderful grace and virtue declared in the holy Lady
Mary our heavenly mother, and in all Thy glorious saints from the
beginning of the world, who have been the choice vessels of Thy
grace and a shining light unto many generations.
Here he crosses himself with the paten.
And we join + with them in worship before Thy great white throne,
whence flow all love and light and blessing through all the worlds
which Thou hast made.
O Son of God, who showest Thyself this day upon a thousand altars
and yet art one and indivisible, in token of Thy great sacrifice we
break this Thy Body.
Here he breaks the Host in half over the chalice and, with a small particle thereof,
makes the sign of the cross thrice over the chalice and, at the words “one in Thee,”
drops the particle into the chalice.
Praying that by this action, ordained from of old, Thy + strength,
Thy + peace, and Thy + blessing, which Thou didst give us in this
TRIDUUM— GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER — page 42
holy sacrament, may be spread abroad upon Thy world; and as
Thou, O Lord Christ, wast made known to Thy disciples in the
breaking of bread, so may Thy many children know themselves
to be one in Thee, even as Thou art one with the Father.
a Amen.
THE SALUTATION OF PEACE
P O Lord Jesus Christ, who didst say to Thine apostles: “Peace I
leave with you, My peace I give unto you,” regard not our
weakness, but the faith of Thy church, and grant her that peace
and unity which are agreeable to Thy holy will and
commandment.
a Amen.
P The peace of the Lord be always with you.
a And with thy spirit.
P O Thou who in this adorable sacrament hast left us a living
memorial and pledge of Thy marvelous love for mankind, and
dost therein graciously draw us into wondrous and mystic
communion with Thee, grant us so to receive the sacred
mysteries of Thy Body and Blood that our souls may be lifted
into the immensity of Thy love, and that, being filled with a high
endeavour, we may ever be mindful of Thine indwelling
presence and breathe forth the fragrance of a holy life.
a Amen.
The priest receives communion, then administers to the clergy and servers, the
people meanwhile saying:
a I believe, O Lord, and I confess,
that Thou art truly the Christ,
the Son of the Living God,
who camest into the world to save sinners,
of whom I am first.
TRIDUUM— GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER — page 43
I believe also that this is truly Thine own pure Body,
and that this is truly Thine own precious Blood.
Therefore I pray Thee to have mercy upon me
and forgive my transgressions,
both voluntary and involuntary,
of word and of deed,
committed knowingly or unknowingly,
of knowledge and of ignorance.
And make me worthy to partake without condemnation
of Thy most pure Mysteries
for the remission of my sins
and unto life everlasting.
Of Thy Mystical Supper, O Son of God,
accept me today as a communicant,
for I will not speak of Thy Mystery to Thine enemies,
neither like Judas will I give Thee a kiss,
but like the thief will I confess Thee.
Remember me, O Lord, in Thy kingdom.
May the communion of Thy Holy Mysteries
be neither to my judgment
nor to my condemnation, O Lord,
but to the healing of soul and body. Amen.
P + Ye that desire to partake of the Body and Blood of the Lord,
draw nigh and receive this most holy sacrament.
The people should come forward to the communion rail and kneel. As he
administers Holy Communion to each, the priest says:
P The Body and Blood + of Our Lord Christ keep thee unto life
eternal.
TRIDUUM— GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER — page 44
After communion, the people kneel and say:
a I thank Thee, O Lord, my God,
for Thou hast not rejected me, a sinner,
but hast made me worthy to be a partaker
of Thy Holy Things.
I thank Thee, for Thou hast permitted me,
the unworthy,
to commune of Thy most pure and heavenly gifts.
But, O Master who lovest mankind,
who for our sakes didst die and rise again
and gavest us these awesome and life-creating
mysteries for the good and sanctification
of our souls and bodies,
let them be for the healing of our souls and bodies,
the repelling of every adversary,
the illumining of the eyes of our hearts,
the peace of our spiritual power,
a faith unashamed,
a love unfeigned,
the fulfilling of wisdom,
the observing of Thy commandments,
the receiving of Thy divine grace,
and the attaining of Thy kingdom.
TRIDUUM— GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER — page 45
Preserved by them in Thy holiness,
may I always remember Thy grace
and live not for myself alone,
but for Thee, our Master and benefactor.
May I pass from this life in the hope of eternal life
and so attain to the everlasting rest,
where the voice of those who feast is unceasing
and the gladness of those
who behold the goodness of Thy countenance
is unending.
For Thou art the true desire
and the ineffable joy of those who love Thee,
O Christ our God,
and all creation sings Thy praise forever. Amen.
P Under the veil of earthly things, now have we communion with
our Lord Jesus Christ; soon with open face shall we behold Him
and, rejoicing in His glory, be made like unto Him. Then shall
His true disciples be brought by Him with exceeding joy before
the presence of His Father’s glory.
COMMUNIO
The people stand and, with the Priest, sing the Proper Communio.
TRIDUUM— GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER — page 46
POSTCOMMUNIO
P The Lord be with you.
a And with thy spirit.
The people kneel.
P Let us pray.
POST-COMMUNION COLLECT
We pray you, O Lord, pour into our hearts the love of your Holy
Spirit; that as you have now filled us with this Paschal Sacrament, so
you would make us grow in all godly concord; through Jesus Christ
our Lord. Amen
The people’s Anglican missal in the American edition (1946), Easter Day, slightly altered
P The Lord be with you. a And with thy spirit.
SOLEMN BLESSING
May Almighty God, who has redeemed us and made us his children
through the resurrection of his Son our Lord, bestow upon you the
riches of his blessing. Amen
May God, who through the water of baptism has raised us from sin
into newness of life, make you holy and worthy to be united with
Christ for ever. Amen
May God, who has brought us out of bondage to sin into true and
lasting freedom in the Redeemer, bring you to your eternal
inheritance. Amen
TRIDUUM— GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER — page 47
And the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the
Holy Spirit, be upon you, and remain with you for ever. Amen
In place of the usual dismissal, the electric lights may be put out, and hand
candles are again lighted. A procession is formed, and the Deacon goes to the
place where tie Gospel is read. During the procession, the following may be
sung .
We praise thee, O God; we acknowledge thee to be the Lord.
All the earth doth worship thee, the Father everlasting.
To thee all Angels cry aloud,
the Heavens and all the Powers therein.
To thee Cherubim and Seraphim continually do cry:
[bow] Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Sabaoth;
Heaven and earth are full of the majesty of thy glory.
The glorious company of the apostles praise thee.
The goodly fellowship of the prophets praise thee.
The noble army of martyrs praise thee.
The holy Church throughout all the world
doth acknowledge thee,
the Father, of an infinite majesty,
thine adorable, true, and only Son,
also the Holy Ghost the Comforter.
Thou art the King of glory, O Christ.
Thou art the everlasting Son of the Father.
[bow] When thou tookest upon thee to deliver man,
thou didst humble thyself to be born of a Virgin.
When thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death,
thou didst open the kingdom of heaven to all believers.
Thou sittest at the right hand of God,
in the glory of the Father.
TRIDUUM— GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER — page 48
We believe that thou shalt come to be our judge. [Genuflect]
We therefore pray thee, help thy servants,
whom thou hast redeemed with thy precious blood. [Rise]
Make them to be numbered with thy saints,
in glory everlasting.
Here the Deacon shall cry out
Christ is risen!
The People answer
C He is risen indeed!
The Deacon, in a louder voice
Christ is risen!
The People, also louder
C He is risen indeed!
The Deacon, still louder
Christ is risen!
The People, likewise
C He is risen indeed!
The lights go on and all greet one another with the
Resurrection greeting.

Easter Vigil.pdf

  • 1. TRIDUUM— GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER — page 1 THE LIGHTING OF NEW FIRE In the darkness, fire is kindled; after which the Celebrant may address the people in these or similar words P Dear friends in Christ: On this most holy night, in which our Lord Jesus passed over from death to life, the Church invites her members, dispersed throughout the world, to gather in vigil and prayer. For this is the Passover of the Lord, in which, by hearing his Word and celebrating his Sacraments, we share in his victory over death. P Let us pray. PRAYER FOR LIGHT P O God, through your Son you have bestowed upon your people the brightness of your light: Sanctify this new fire, and grant that in this Paschal feast we may so burn with heavenly desires, that with pure minds we may attain to the festival of everlasting light; through Jesus Christ our Lord. C Amen. The Celebrant lights the Paschal Candle from the flame. If there is a procession, it follows. THE SOLEMN PROCESSION

  • 7. TRIDUUM— GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER — page 7 It is customary that the Paschal Candle burn at all services from Easter Day through the Day of Pentecost. P Let us hear the record of God’s saving deeds in history, how he saved his people in ages past; and let us pray that our God will bring each of us to the fullness of redemption. FIRST READING Genesis 1:1-2:2 (JB) In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was a formless void, there was darkness over the deep, and God’s spirit hovered over the water. God said, ‘Let there be light’, and there was light. God saw that light was good, and God divided light from darkness. God called light ‘day’, and darkness he called ‘night’. Evening came and morning came: the first day. God said, ‘Let there be a vault in the waters to divide the waters in two’. And so it was. God made the vault, and it divided the waters above the vault from the waters under the vault. God called the vault ‘heaven’. Evening came and morning came: the second day.
  • 8. TRIDUUM— GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER — page 8 God said, ‘Let the waters under heaven come together into a single mass, and let dry land appear’. And so it was. God called the dry land ‘earth’ and the mass of waters ‘seas’, and God saw that it was good. God said, ‘Let the earth produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants, and fruit trees bearing fruit with their seed inside, on the earth’. And so it was. The earth produced vegetation: plants bearing seed in their several kinds, and trees bearing fruit with their seed inside in their several kinds. God saw that it was good. Evening came and morning came: the third day. God said, ‘Let there be lights in the vault of heaven to divide day from night, and let them indicate festivals, days and years. Let them be lights in the vault of heaven to shine on the earth.’ And so it was. God made the two great lights: the greater light to govern the day, the smaller light to govern the night, and the stars. God set them in the vault of heaven to shine on the earth, to govern the day and the night and to divide light from darkness. God saw that it was good. Evening came and morning came: the fourth day. God said, ‘Let the waters teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth within the vault of heaven’. And so it was. God created great sea-serpents and every kind of living creature with which the waters teem, and every kind of winged creature. God saw that it was good. God blessed them, saying, ‘Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the waters of the seas; and let the birds multiply upon the earth’. Evening came and morning came: the fifth day. God said, ‘Let the earth produce every kind of living creature: cattle, reptiles, and every kind of wild beast’. And so it was. God made every kind of wild beast, every kind of cattle, and every kind of land reptile. God saw that it was good. God said, ‘Let us make man in our own image, in the likeness of ourselves, and let them be masters of the fish of the sea, the birds of heaven, the cattle, all the wild beasts and all the reptiles that crawl upon the earth’. God created man in the image of himself, in the image of God he created him, male and female he created them.
  • 9. TRIDUUM— GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER — page 9 God blessed them, saying to them, ‘Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth and conquer it. Be masters of the fish of the sea, the birds of heaven and all living animals on the earth.’ God said, ‘See, I give you all the seed-bearing plants that are upon the whole earth, and all the trees with seed-bearing fruit; this shall be your food. To all wild beasts, all birds of heaven and all living reptiles on the earth I give all the foliage of plants for food.’ And so it was. God saw all he had made, and indeed it was very good. Evening came and morning came: the sixth day. Thus heaven and earth were completed with all their array. On the seventh day God completed the work he had been doing. He rested on the seventh day after all the work he had been doing.
  • 10. TRIDUUM— GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER — page 10 SECOND READING Genesis 22:1-18 (JB) It happened some time later that God put Abraham to the test. ‘Abraham, Abraham’ he called. ‘Here I am’ he replied. ‘Take your son,’ God said ‘your only child Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. There you shall offer him as a burnt offering, on a mountain I will point out to you.’ Rising early next morning Abraham saddled his ass and took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. He chopped wood for the
  • 11. TRIDUUM— GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER — page 11 burnt offering and started on his journey to the place God had pointed out to him. On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. Then Abraham said to his servants, ‘Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go over there; we will worship and come back to you.’ Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering, loaded it on Isaac, and carried in his own hands the fire and the knife. Then the two of them set out together. Isaac spoke to his father Abraham, ‘Father’ he said. ‘Yes, my son’ he replied. ‘Look,’ he said ‘here are the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?’ Abraham answered, ‘My son, God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering’. Then the two of them went on together. When they arrived at the place God had pointed out to him, Abraham built an altar there, and arranged the wood. Then he bound his son Isaac and put him on the altar on top of the wood. Abraham stretched out his hand and seized the knife to kill his son. But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven. ‘Abraham, Abraham’ he said. ‘I am here’ he replied. ‘Do not raise your hand against the boy’ the angel said. ‘Do not harm him, for now I know you fear God. You have not refused me your son, your only son.’ Then looking up, Abraham saw a ram caught by its horns in a bush. Abraham took the ram and offered it as a burnt-offering in place of his son. Abraham called this place ‘The Lord Provides’, and hence the saying today: On the mountain the Lord provides. The angel of the Lord called Abraham a second time from heaven. ‘I swear by my own self – it is the Lord who speaks – because you have done this, because you have not refused me your son, your only son, I will shower blessings on you, I will make your descendants as many as the stars of heaven and the grains of sand on the seashore. Your descendants shall gain possession of the gates of their enemies. All the nations of the earth shall bless themselves by your descendants, as a reward for your obedience.’
  • 12. TRIDUUM— GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER — page 12 PSALM: Psalm 15:5,8-11 R Preserve me, God, I take refuge in you. O Lord, it is you who are my portion and cup; it is you yourself who are my prize. I keep the Lord ever in my sight: since he is at my right hand, I shall stand firm. R Preserve me, God, I take refuge in you. And so my heart rejoices, my soul is glad; even my body shall rest in safety. For you will not leave my soul among the dead, nor let your beloved know decay. R Preserve me, God, I take refuge in you. You will show me the path of life, the fullness of joy in your presence, at your right hand happiness for ever. R Preserve me, God, I take refuge in you. Psalm Collect Grant to us, merciful God, to enter Thy church without spot, and turn us away from doing evil to our neighbors; that while we observe all things according to Thy precepts, we may not be afflicted by Thy punishments forever; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, One God, world without end. Amen. THIRD READING Exodus 14:15-15:1 (JB) The Lord said to Moses, ‘Why do you cry to me so? Tell the sons of Israel to march on. For yourself, raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and part it for the sons of Israel to walk through the sea on dry ground. I for my part will make the heart of
  • 13. TRIDUUM— GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER — page 13 the Egyptians so stubborn that they will follow them. So shall I win myself glory at the expense of Pharaoh, of all his army, his chariots, his horsemen. And when I have won glory for myself, at the expense of Pharaoh and his chariots and his army, the Egyptians will learn that I am the Lord.’ Then the angel of God, who marched at the front of the army of Israel, changed station and moved to their rear. The pillar of cloud changed station from the front to the rear of them, and remained there. It came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel. The cloud was dark, and the night passed without the armies drawing any closer the whole night long. Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. The Lord drove back the sea with a strong easterly wind all night, and he made dry land of the sea. The waters parted and the sons of Israel went on dry ground right into the sea, walls of water to right and to left of them. The Egyptians gave chase: after them they went, right into the sea, all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots, and his horsemen. In the morning watch, the Lord looked down on the army of the Egyptians from the pillar of fire and of cloud, and threw the army into confusion. He so clogged their chariot wheels that they could scarcely make headway. ‘Let us flee from the Israelites,’ the Egyptians cried ‘the Lord is fighting for them against the Egyptians!’ ‘Stretch out your hand over the sea,’ the Lord said to Moses ‘that the waters may flow back on the Egyptians and their chariots and their horsemen.’ Moses stretched out his hand over the sea and, as day broke, the sea returned to its bed. The fleeing Egyptians marched right into it, and the Lord overthrew the Egyptians in the very middle of the sea. The returning waters overwhelmed the chariots and the horsemen of Pharaoh’s whole army, which had followed the Israelites into the sea; not a single one of them was left. But the sons of Israel had marched through the sea on dry ground, walls of water to right and to left of them. That day, the Lord rescued Israel from the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians lying dead on the shore. Israel witnessed the great act that the Lord had performed against the Egyptians, and the people venerated the Lord; they put their faith in the Lord and in Moses, his servant. It was then that Moses and the sons of Israel sang this song in honour of the Lord:

  • 15. TRIDUUM— GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER — page 15 Collect O God, whose wonderful deeds of old shine forth even to our own day, you once delivered by the power of your mighty arm your chosen people from slavery under Pharaoh, to be a sign for us of the salvation of all nations by the water of Baptism: Grant that all the peoples of the earth may be numbered among the offspring of Abraham, and rejoice in the inheritance of Israel; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. FOURTH READING Isaiah 54:5-14 (JB) For now your creator will be your husband, his name, the Lord of Hosts; your redeemer will be the Holy One of Israel, he is called the God of the whole earth. Yes, like a forsaken wife, distressed in spirit, the Lord calls you back. Does a man cast off the wife of his youth? says your God. I did forsake you for a brief moment, but with great love will I take you back. In excess of anger, for a moment I hid my face from you. But with everlasting love I have taken pity on you, says the Lord, your redeemer. I am now as I was in the days of Noah when I swore that Noah’s waters should never flood the world again. So now I swear concerning my anger with you and the threats I made against you; for the mountains may depart, the hills be shaken, but my love for you will never leave you and my covenant of peace with you will never be shaken, says the Lord who takes pity on you.
  • 16. TRIDUUM— GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER — page 16 Unhappy creature, storm-tossed, disconsolate, see, I will set your stones on carbuncles and your foundations on sapphires. I will make rubies your battlements, your gates crystal, and your entire wall precious stones. Your sons will all be taught by the Lord. The prosperity of your sons will be great. You will be founded on integrity; remote from oppression, you will have nothing to fear; remote from terror, it will not approach you. PSALM: Psalm 30(29):2,4-6,11-13 R I will praise you, Lord, you have rescued me. I will praise you, Lord, you have rescued me and have not let my enemies rejoice over me. O Lord, you have raised my soul from the dead, restored me to life from those who sink into the grave. R I will praise you, Lord, you have rescued me. Sing psalms to the Lord, you who love him, give thanks to his holy name. His anger lasts a moment; his favour all through life. At night there are tears, but joy comes with dawn. R I will praise you, Lord, you have rescued me. The Lord listened and had pity. The Lord came to my help. For me you have changed my mourning into dancing: O Lord my God, I will thank you for ever. R I will praise you, Lord, you have rescued me.

Why spend money on what is not bread, your wages on what fails to satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and you will have good things to eat and rich food to enjoy. Pay attention, come to me; listen, and your soul will live. With you I will make an everlasting covenant out of the favors promised to David. See, I have made of you a witness to the peoples, a leader and a master of the nations. See, you will summon a nation you never knew, those unknown will come hurrying to you, for the sake of the Lord your God, of the Holy One of Israel who will glorify you. Seek the Lord while he is still to be found, call to him while he is still near. Let the wicked man abandon his way, the evil man his thoughts. Let him turn back to the Lord who will take pity on him, to our God who is rich in forgiving; for my thoughts are not your thoughts,

Why, Israel, why are you in the country of your enemies, growing older and older in an alien land, sharing defilement with the dead, reckoned with those who go to Sheol? Because you have forsaken the fountain of wisdom. Had you walked in the way of God, you would have lived in peace for ever. Learn where knowledge is, where strength, where understanding, and so learn where length of days is, where life, where the light of the eyes and where peace. But who has found out where she lives, who has entered her treasure house? But the One who knows all knows her, he has grasped her with his own intellect, he has set the earth firm for ever and filled it with four-footed beasts. he sends the light – and it goes, he recalls it – and trembling it obeys; the stars shine joyfully at their set times: when he calls them, they answer, ‘Here we are’; they gladly shine for their creator. SEVENTH READING Ezekiel 36:16-28 (JB) The word of the Lord was addressed to me as follows: ‘Son of man, the members of the House of Israel used to live in their own land, but they defiled it by their conduct and actions. I then discharged my fury at them because of the blood they shed in their land and the idols with which they defiled it. I scattered them among the nations and dispersed them in foreign countries. I sentenced them as their conduct and actions deserved. And now they have profaned my holy name among the nations where they have gone, so that people say of them, “These are the people of the Lord; they have been exiled from his land”. But I have been concerned about my holy name, which the House of Israel has profaned among the nations where they have gone. And so, say to the House of Israel, “The Lord says this: I am not doing this for your sake, House of Israel, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations where you have gone. I mean to display the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, which you have profaned among them. And the nations will learn that I am the Lord–it is the Lord who speaks– when I display my holiness for your sake before their eyes. Then I am going to take you from among the nations and gather you together from all the foreign countries, and bring you home to your own land. I shall pour clean water over you and you will be cleansed; I shall cleanse you of all your defilement and all your idols. • 28. TRIDUUM— GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER — page 28 EPISTLE / LETTER Romans 6:3-11 You have been taught that when we were baptized in Christ Jesus we were baptized in his death; in other words, when we were baptized we went into the tomb with him and joined him in death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the Father’s glory, we too might live a new life. If in union with Christ we have imitated his death, we shall also imitate him in his resurrection. We must realise that our former selves have been crucified with him to destroy this sinful body and to free us from the slavery of sin. When a Christian dies, of course, he has finished with sin. But we believe that having died with Christ we shall return to life with him: Christ, as we know, having been raised from the dead will never die again. Death has no power over him any more. When he died, he died, once for all, to sin, so his life now is life with God; and in that way, you too must consider yourselves to be dead to sin but alive for God in Christ Jesus. ALLELUIA

They found that the stone had been rolled away from the tomb, but on entering discovered that the body of the Lord Jesus was not there. As they stood there not knowing what to think, two men in brilliant clothes suddenly appeared at their side. Terrified, the women lowered their eyes. But the two men said to them, ‘Why look among the dead for someone who is alive? He is not here; he has risen. Remember what he told you when he was still in Galilee: that the Son of Man had to be handed over into the power of sinful men and be crucified, and rise again on the third day?’ And they remembered his words. If any have wrought from the first hour, let him today receive his just reward. If any have come at the third hour, let him with thankfulness keep the feast. If any have arrived at the sixth hour, let him have no misgivings; because he shall in nowise be deprived therefor. If any have delayed until the ninth hour, let him draw near, fearing nothing. If any have tarried even until the eleventh hour let him, also, be not alarmed at his tardiness; for the Lord, who is jealous of his hon our, will accept the last even as the first; he giveth rest unto him who cometh at the eleventh hour, even as unto him who hath wrought from the first hour. Let no one fear death, for the Savior’s death hath set us free. He that was held prisoner of it, hath annihilated it. By decending into Hell, he made Hell captive. He angered it when it tasted of his flesh. And Isaiah, foretelling this, did cry: Hell, said he, was angered, when it encountered thee in the lower regions. It was angered, for it was abolished. It was angered, for it was mocked. It was angered, for it was slain. It was angered, for it was overthrown. It was angered, for it was fettered in chains. It took a body, and met God face to face.
