Outstanding Student Performance at Christie Digital
1. Comments provided “in order to register the [work term performance] rating of Outstanding”.
Taken from Calvin Brereton’s 3A work term Student Performance Evaluation (December 2015):
This term was Calvin’s second term as a Mechanical co-op student in the Cinema group
at Christie Digital. From the onset, he proved to be an excellent addition to the team and
became a dependable team member that anyone could trust with new tasks. His ability
to quickly learn the skills required for ANY job is exceptional. Calvin quickly became one
of the most flexible members of our group as he was able to switch seamlessly between
tasks and core competencies (mechanical, software, and electrical).
This term marked the conclusion of Calvin’s work started in the Winter 2016 co-op term
to minimize vibration on Cinema projectors. With minimal supervision, he was able to
successfully investigate, test, prototype, and design a new solution to solve the problem.
His new design is currently in the process of being implemented on Solaria One,
CP2208, and CP2215 projectors for all units produced in the future. These three
products are Christie’s most popular products with thousands produced and installed per
year. Calvin’s work on this issue has had a significant impact throughout Christie as
several engineering teams are considering and planning on using his design on future
projects and products.
Perhaps one of Calvin’s largest contributions this term was the screen shaker software
project. Initially, Calvin was tasked to revamp an Excel worksheet used by technicians in
the field to plan, purchase, and install complex cinema screen shaker systems. With
Calvin’s contributions, it became apparent that the software had a great potential to
become an essential planning tool for field technicians. At this point, Calvin taught
himself how to use and program with C++ to create a standalone software package that
could easily and intuitively be used by anyone performing an installation. Very positive
feedback was received from customers, engineers, and service personnel.
Calvin is way ahead of his peers in terms of technical experience, knowledge, learning
initiative, resourcefulness, communication, and creativity. He was a pleasure to work
with and became an essential part of our team. We would love to have Calvin back for
another work term or even for a full time position at Christie if available.
