Drivers from the MMEA program
Globally there is a growing need to control emissions and to monitor the environment and
industrial processes. Global trends indicate that more public databases will be opened.
There are also new opportunities in the increasing power of scientific computing, sensor &
monitoring technologies and ICT technology generally.
The future of environmental metrics
The aim of the MMEA research consortium is to develop new tools, standards and methods
for environmental measurement, monitoring and decision support, that are attractive to
both the national and international markets. The program promotes new applications and
services, based on environmental data, to improve the energy and material efficiency of
infrastructures and industrial processes.
The program combines the development of new measurement technologies, data quality
assurance methods, modeling and forecasting tools, and information and communication
technology (ICT) infrastructure. These are needed to create the integrated environmental
observation networks and environmental decision support systems of the future. The
general concept is described in figure 1 below.

Benchmarking energy efficient indoor
environments
MMEA develops new applications that deliver relevant environmental information to
various end-users worldwide for sustainable decision making and enable more efficient
utilisation of measurement data in environmental monitoring, energy production, industrial
processes, civil infrastructure, safety and crisis management and consumer applications.
Application development is enabled by an interoperable, modular, quality controlled
measurement & monitoring platform, the MMEA platform (Figure 3). The platform
consists of 1) the environmental information market place, EnviTori, 2) MMEA Testbed,
and 3) MMEA Framework. The framework provides software, definitions, documentation
and guidelines for implementing interoperable measurement systems, which are also
the basis for MMEA Testbed and the environmental information market place. MMEA
Testbed includes various data sources and processing services that can be accessed via
the framework services. EnviTori provides means for data providers and users to trade
environmental information.
MMEA Testbed is a platform for testing of environmental information and monitoring.
MMEA Testbed resembles and extends the currently operational Helsinki Testbed, which is
made up of several hundred observation stations measuring weather-related parameters.
MMEA Testbed will integrate data from several environmental measurement networks into
a portal to be analysed, modelled and used as raw material for new environmental services.
New measurement technologies will be developed to support the versatile nature of the
platform. When data and tools are easily accessible, innovations can be generated from the
platform, which consists of shared environmental data with embedded quality.
Figure 3. MMEA Platform.
One application of the MMEA platform is an indoor air quality pilot. The pilot provides new
tools for building stakeholders for better control over indoor environment and improved
energy effi ciency. The pilot gives them the possibility to benchmark their buildings and to
optimise their energy use.
The service is based on the MMEA
platform that enables connectivity
with many diff erent data sources,
data transformation, calculation
and messaging services and data
storage. Providers of measurement
systems and services can with
only one mediator connect to this
open source platform and give
access to their measurement data
to various information service
providers and end users.
