• There’s a wonderful article from the Wall Street Journal
currently circulating the internet which states:
“You will change careers 7 times in your life”
• It’s not something most employers appreciate hearing!
– How do you feel about re-inventing yourself 7 times?
• However, the story behind the headline tells a slightly
different tale…
• What it refers to as a “career change” looks a lot like
what we’d call “career development or progression”

CAREER DEVELOPMENT
• Now the question becomes “how can I best drive my career progression and
professional development?”
• The answer is, “it depends”, on where you’re starting from and your current
level of experience and qualifications?
• The usual starting point for many in our sector is either an apprenticeship or
graduate programme
• Once you “graduate” the responsibility for driving your development is yours
– With the support of your line manager and the resources available to
you in your organisation

• In truth, as with most things, you’ll develop by using a combination of
methods
• The key is to know where you’re heading and plan with the end in mind!
– What does “good look like” in the role and what do I lack?
• If you want to apply rigour to your development structure it like this:
– 70% on-the-job: new experiences, stretching objectives and challenge
– 20% coaching and mentoring
– 10% formal learning

• In-house company training scheme
– For: tailored to the exact needs of the role, will fit around existing
commitments, great experience
– Against: not usually a recognised qualification, can be of variable quality
• Continued formal education
– For: qualifications are currency, recognised evidence of capability,
opportunity to work with people outside your usual circle
– Against: costly (for you or your business), sponsored qualifications often
have tie-in clauses, time consuming

– Professional accreditation i.e. CIBSE/IET
– Job swaps or secondments, projects or work
assignments

Passion | Integrity | Excellence CAREER DEVELOPMENT • There’s a wonderful article from the Wall Street Journal currently circulating the internet which states: “You will change careers 7 times in your life” • It’s not something most employers appreciate hearing! – How do you feel about re-inventing yourself 7 times? • However, the story behind the headline tells a slightly different tale… • What it refers to as a “career change” looks a lot like what we’d call “career development or progression”

Passion | Integrity | Excellence CAREER DEVELOPMENT • Now the question becomes “how can I best drive my career progression and professional development?” • The answer is, “it depends”, on where you’re starting from and your current level of experience and qualifications? • The usual starting point for many in our sector is either an apprenticeship or graduate programme • Once you “graduate” the responsibility for driving your development is yours – With the support of your line manager and the resources available to you in your organisation

Passion | Integrity | Excellence CAREER DEVELOPMENT • In truth, as with most things, you’ll develop by using a combination of methods • The key is to know where you’re heading and plan with the end in mind! – What does “good look like” in the role and what do I lack? • If you want to apply rigour to your development structure it like this: – 70% on-the-job: new experiences, stretching objectives and challenge – 20% coaching and mentoring – 10% formal learning

Passion | Integrity | Excellence CAREER DEVELOPMENT • In-house company training scheme – For: tailored to the exact needs of the role, will fit around existing commitments, great experience – Against: not usually a recognised qualification, can be of variable quality • Continued formal education – For: qualifications are currency, recognised evidence of capability, opportunity to work with people outside your usual circle – Against: costly (for you or your business), sponsored qualifications often have tie-in clauses, time consuming
