Isolation In Poetry Comparison Essay
Two poems can share a similar theme of loneliness, but can have different purposes to portray psychical versus emotional isolation. In Emily
Dickinson's poem, "I felt a Funeral, in my Brain, she describes being buried alive at her own funeral to support a social isolation. While in Robert
Frost's poem, "Desert Places", he describes the winter scenery to show how he is psychically isolated from society. Even though these poems share a
similar theme, the narrators create lonesome feelings from their different settings. In "Desert Places" Frost describes the scenery in great detail. Since
the poem in constructed around this description, there is distinct imagery which helps to visualize a secluded area in the snowy woods. He even includes

Comparing Two Poems
The poems I will talk about, are poems you may or may not have heard before. They are very different from each other. The first poem titled "Starry
Night" was written by Anne Sexton a poet of the 20th century. The poem talks about a peaceful death wish by the author herself. The second poem
"The Village Blacksmith" was written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. It talks about a blacksmith who works hard, and has had some rough
patches in his life. These poems both talk about different subjects, and are filled with different poetic devices and elements. I picked a few to
compare. The elements I chose, focus on showing the differences in the poems. The first comparison is dealing with the way both poems are written.
"Starry Night" is written in Free verse. It doesn't follow a pattern or rhythm of any kind. For example "It moves. They are alive. / Even the moon
bulges in its orange irons" (Sexton 7–9). However "The Village Blacksmith" does follow a rhythm. Here is an example from the text: Under a
spreading chestnut tree The village smithy stands: The smith, a mighty man is he, With large and sinewy hands, (Longfellow 1–4). These lines are a
clear indicator of rhythm....show more content...
The author's tone in "Starry Night" is expressed in the poem when talking about the beautiful night. It says, "Oh starry starry night! This is how / I
want to die" (Sexton 5–6). The exclamation point in the line shows passion in the text. And "The Village Blacksmith" has a rhyme scheme, which is
shown in this example. "You can hear his bellows blow / You can hear him swing his heavy sledge, / With measured beat and slow" (Longfellow
14–16). The example shows the rhyme scheme which happens to be every other line as a

My Poetry Comparison
In my poetry comparison essay I have gone through a number of different changes throughout my essay. One of these changes I the manner of how I
use language throughout my essay. For example, previously I used the lines such as "pilgrims and poetry readers are similar because of the trails they
faced," now, after revising my essay the same line reads as such, "Pilgrims and poetry readers share a similar bond as both at one point or another
must face hardship." Another example of something I changed in my revision of my poetry essay is the grammar I used. For example, one of the
lines that I changed in my essay read as such, "when the pilgrims faced hardships, they simply had to tough it out." The know revised line after some
grammatical changes,

A Good Comparative Essay: GCSE Poetry
Writing A Good Comparative Essay– GCSE Poetry
You will be asked to compare two or more poems in your exam.
You could be asked to write about the presentation of themes, people or places and the importance of language.
A good comparative essay is like a multi–layered sandwich:
BREAD – A new point.
FILLING A– How one of your chosen poems illustrates this point.
FILLING B – How your other chosen poem illustrates this point.
BREAD – Your conclusion about this point.
This is what the examiners call cross–referencing – you talk about both poems all the way through your answer.
What the examiner will look for:
When marking your essay, the examiner will look to see whether you have appreciated and explored the:
ideas
attitudes and...show more content...
What is the Examiner looking for in an A* response to the Poetry?
An A* response is characterised by a conceptualised, insightful and imaginative approach to the texts that combines an analytical and exploratory use
of detail in each poem individually with evaluative comparison across both poems discussed in the answer.
Essentially, an A* response will set itself apart from the hundreds of other responses because it has an individual and unique approach that shows the
writer has developed their own individual ideas about the texts. This approach is characterised by a confident engagement with the themes, ideas,
relationships and technical construction of the poems. Equally, the writer of an A* response will show comparative skill; making links and cross
referencing the poems using telling detail to form the basis of insightful comparisons between the poems.
At first this may appear daunting but with a ruthless and systematic approach it can be achieved. Essentially, the key to performing at this level is
having your own ideas; if you can form your own opinions about each of the poems then you will be able to write this kind of essay. The real skill
here is to marry the ideas that you have with a written style that allows you to showcase them in the examination.
You might begin and end your response with some theoretical discussion of the concept in the title question. In the case of this question, the concept is
death, therefore you might begin your essay

Poem Comparison
The Difference in Similarity
"Lady Lazarus," by Sylvia Plath and " "The Waking" by Theodore Roethke are two poems that relate directly to the speaker. Although both poems
share this similarity, the way in which both works or literature are constructed are vastly different. Plath uses visual imagery and poetical tercets to
show the pain and suffering of the speaker in her poem, while Roethke uses the musical Villanelle and synesthesia to create his picture of the speaker's
inner thoughts and a sense of awakening.
When reading the poem "Lady Lazarus" for the first time, the subject matter can be a little difficult to comprehend. The title of this poem and the
speaker share the same name, ultimately making connections to the poet...show more content...
A tercet is a three–line stanza. These stanzas are mostly made up of short, choppy lines with a mix of enjambment and end stop lines that can been
seen as an example in lines 22–24 when the speaker says: "[This] is Number Three. (end stop)/ What a Trash (enjambment)/To annihilate each
decade. (end stop). When read aloud, the words move quickly and forcefully. It almost sounds like the speaker is spitting her words out to the reader
in disgust. This could relate to her overall feelings of disgust throughout the poem. This poem also has use of perfect rhyme and slant rhyme. One
instance of perfect rhyme happens in lines 83–84, where the words hair and air rhyme. An example of slant rhyme occurs in lines 71–72, where the
words burn and concern sound rhythmical. Also, there is use in anaphora in "I do it so it feels like hell" (line 46) and " I do it so it feels real" (line 47).
While these various kinds of repetitions of sounds occur all over the place in "Lady Lazarus," they do not occur in a particular pattern. The rhymes
have an off–kilter feel to them, and this allows the poem to be fast and free wheeling. The reader never knows when a rhyme or some other kind of
repetition is going to happen next. I think it works to the feeling of the speaker very effectively because the speaker is in an erratic state of mind.
"The Waking" is characterized as a Villanelle, which means an Italian word referring to a rustic song or dance. Villanelles have five tercets

Comparison Of Love Poetry: Essay
Comparison Of Love Poetry:
Rememberby Christina Rossetti, How Do I Love Thee? by Elizabeth
Barrett Browning and When We Two Parted by Lord Byron
The three poems, Remember by Christina Rossetti; How Do I love Thee? by Elizabeth Barrett Browning and When We Two Parted by Lord Byron,
each explore love and loss in their own unique ways. Remember is, as expected from the title, a solemn lament which is a farewell sonnet to her
treasured one. How Do I Love Thee? is again a sonnet of love but is of a love that is present and hopefully will remain forever. The third poem that
will be examined is When We Two Parted which tells of a lost secret love that has left a scar on Lord Byron's life.
Elizabeth Barrett Browning's impressive...show more content...
This also happens in
First Love by John Clare where this rhyming structure stresses the fact that they were not as one rather just the one. When We Two Parted is
particularly interesting as Lord Byron is frequently described as a womaniser yet he seems to express regret at the incident as, for once, it appears to
have harmed him more than the other involved.
The last poem to be studied in detail is Remember by Christina
Rossetti. This is a patriarchal sonnet like How Do I Love Thee? but tells a different story. Remember is a sombre dirge acting as a departing message for
Christina Rossetti's loved one. Also the separation between the octet and the sestet is much more evident in this, the first segment of eight lines is a
reminder of the good times and how much she will be missed. But the second section of six lines acts as a messenger to tell that the time has come to
move on. To live their life without the one soon deceased. We also know that this poem is genuinely heartfelt as
Christina Rossetti had a recurring illness which was diagnosed sometimes as angina and sometimes as tuberculosis before finally dying of cancer on
December 29th 1894.
How Do I Love Thee? is thought by many to be the epitome of the love poem and I don't think anyone can disagree when reading the descriptions of
faultless love. 'I love thee to the depth and breadth and height my soul can reach'. This is, perhaps, the best description of true love, showing Elizabeth

Comparison of Poetry of a Different Culture We live in a society where culture and identity are very important. Culture is the distinctive practices
and beliefs of a society. Culture is all about where we live, our language, the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the celebrations we celebrate and the
things we value. Many people who live in poorer countries move over to the bigger cities were there are more jobs and money. Many people end up
living in a place they don't know. In English we have studied five poems from another culture, which was Jamaica. All the culture poems we studied
were mostly about a man or woman wanting to go back to Jamaica. We have to do our coursework on this topic...show more content...
For a few seconds every morning he still thinks he is in the Caribbean. The first word of the poem, 'morning' sets the scene for the rest of the poem.
The line, 'The island man wakes up to the sound of blue surf in his head,' tells us the man imagines blue waves in his head. Right from the start of
the poem we learn that the poet's homeland is very important to him. The line, 'the steady breaking and wombing' is comforting, the word
'breaking' is a sea sound and the word 'wombing' is a surf sound. The second stanza is like the Caribbean man is coming out of his dream. The
words 'Emerald Island' are a colour metaphor and he makes it sound like the island is precious to him. Emeralds are precious stones. The words
'groggily, groggily' are like an echo, reflecting the sleepy mood of the island man. In the third stanza we learn what London is like. The words
'grey metallic soar' gave a strong impression of the traffic and the city life. The line, 'North circular roar,' North circular is a road in London and the
Caribbean man lives near it. The word 'heaves' means he doesn't want to do something but forces himself to do it. This verse is in complete contrast
to the earlier images of Island life. In the last line the phrase, 'Another London day,' the man is saying that he is ready to face another day in London.
The Caribbean man lives in London but wakes up in his home, which

Comparison Poetry Essay
Poetry Essay Each one of the poems offers a unique view upon love. The first poem by Robert Herrick, "To the Virgins to make much of Time,"
focuses upon the idea of carpe diem. The poem stresses the idea of marriage while love and flesh are still young and believes this gift of virginity
to be a great waste if not given while it is still desirable. Marvell also uses the carpe diem theme to his poem 'To His Coy Mistress,' however with
three certain sections within the poem. The first part elaborates on the idea of unlimited time; this then evolves a 'but' into the poem that everything
must come to end and death catches up upon us. Then in the last third of the poem the word 'therefore' comes into play as the poet says that we should

Herrick tries to scare the reader into marriage, he does not with for them to be without protection but the carpe diem theme also suggests that they
must go and seize the day, while they are still in prime and youth, so they are not wasted. This is summed up in the fourth and last stanza of the
poem 'for having lost but once your prime, / you may for ever tarry'. Marvell also uses the carpe diem theme to his poem 'To His Coy Mistress,'
however with three certain sections within the poem. The first part elaborates on the idea of unlimited time; this then evolves a 'but' into the poem
that everything must come to end and death catches up upon us. Then in the last third of the poem the word 'therefore' comes into play as the poet
says that we should enjoy the time we now have with one another. The main point of the poem is for Marvell to persuade his coy mistress 'to sport'
(now let us sport us why we may) and at first glance appears to use conventional methods to get his time of pleasure. The 'Coy Mistress' within the
title may imply a complicated relationship with coy meaning a shy, quiet reserved person, not the sort of person that one would imagine 'to sport'.
Also the word mistress derives from the word 'master' and gives a sense of authority. During the first stanza of Marvell's poem he tries to persuade
his mistress, praising her using conventional ways 'to walk and pass our love's long day'. Marvell explains that they will live and love one another

Poetry Comparison
Two poems that I could easily contrast against one another are Thomas Campion, "There Is A Garden In Her Face" and William Shakespeare,
Sonnet 130. The two poems both discuss the topic of the poet's' love interest; in contrary to one another, Shakespeare's approach is more realistic,
whereas, Campion's approach may seem more pleasant to hear its ideas are unrealistic. Campion states, "There is a garden in her face," to describe his
love's immeasurable beauty and glow. Throughout the remainder of his poem, Campion continuously expresses that his beloved has more beauty than
those objects created by God in nature such as: flowers, pearls, and angels. Shakespeare expresses his affect for his romantic companion in a way that
shows that all though...show more content...
In my opinion I believe that Shakespeare's poem is the one that I find to be more agreeable for me. The realistic approach of Shakespeare loving
his partner with all of her flaw put a smile on my face because it shows that you do not need to be the textbook definition of perfect to find your
own form of true love. Although every girl wants to hear that her boyfriend thinks she is the prettiest thing in the world, I think it is more caring if
the emotions and feelings expressed towards you were meant was compassion yet seriousness. Having someone love me with my flaw is more
important than someone ignoring my flaws and pretending that they see me as perfect, knowing that nobody is perfect. In conclusion, I enjoyed
reading because of these poems but I find myself relating to Shakespeare's poem more because I connects with the everyday life that people are
constantly living in, not the fairytale that people can only dream of. Shakespeare's poem, Sonnet 130, connects with the true and relatable meaning of
falling in love, the type of love that has faults and imperfections, but with those imperfection a unique form a beauty is created, and that beauty in its
own can be

Poems And Song Comparison
It is said that songs are just poems set to a catchy tune. Though Poems and songs speak to different people in the same way and vice versa to different
people in different ways. Poem: A piece of writing that partakes of the mature of both speech and song that is nearly always rhythmical, usually
metaphorical, and often exhibits such formal elements as meter, rhyme, and stanzaic structure. Song: A short poem or other set of words set to music
or meant to be sung.
The poem and the song share similar qualities as in their subject. From birth to death is something that relatedly touches everyone. They also speak on
how to embrace life's changes and take on comes. Where Cummings could have used more tasteful phrasing such as time stood still, he instead to place

A Comparison of Poetry Essay
A Comparison of Poetry In this essay two poems will be juxtaposed. One of the poems is called "My parents kept me from children who were

20th century and died 22 years after W H Auden in 1995 .The second poem chosen is called "Funeral Blues and was written by W H Auden. W H
Auden was a greatly respected homosexual poet who lived in the 20th century. He was born in 1907 and died in 1973. W H Auden's full name was
Wystan Hugh Auden. He wrote Funeral Blues in 1936. In the poem "My parents kept me from children who were rough" a young boy is being bullied

The rhythm in "Funeral Blues" is a very slow one which emphasises the sadness of the poet whereas in the poem "My parents kept me from
children who were rough" there is a medium pace rhythm which accelerates gradually during the poem and then slows down at the end to a slow
pace. Both "My parents kept me from children who were rough" and "Funeral Blues" have four lines in every verse but the amount of verses in
each poem differ since the poem "My parents kept me from children who were rough" has only three verses whereas "Funeral Blues has four. In the
poem "My parents kept me from children who were rough" all three of the verses are set in the past tense whereas in "Funeral Blues" three of the
verses are talking about the present and only one is talking about the past. The verse, which is referring to something in the past, is the one that
talks about the man who died. In the poem "My parents kept me from children who were rough" lines similar to "I feared more than tigers their
muscles like iron" conjures up an image in one's head of large and very muscular boys. An example of the boys abuse and images, which is stated in
the poem, is " And who threw world like stones and who wore torn clothes". This line shows us that the boys would use bad language and would dress
very badly. The imagery in "Funeral Blues" is one of a heart broken man who is very sad and depressed

The two poems I've selected are "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" by Robert Frost, and "The Snow–Storm" by Ralph Waldo Emerson.
Speaking in the story Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, is a man riding his horse through some really dark woods, trying to get to where he
has to be. In The Snow–Storm, the author, Ralph Waldo Emerson, is speaking of a real cold winter storm that happens to delay everyone's daily
activities that had been going on. Both poems center around the images of snow, however they differ in the way in how they describe the snow. The
use of imagery is very well detailed in both poems. In Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, it says: "To watch his woods fill up with snow." Its

Sassoon and Owen's rhetorical style help connect the reader to the events being described and communicate successfully their feelings of anguish about
the war. Sassoon and Owen further communicate their contempt for the war and its unforgiving treatment of the soldiers through the use of
alliteration. Sassoon says, "Paid, with a pile of peace–complacent stone" (line 7). The sarcastic use of "Paid" suggests Sassoon does not believe the
Menin Gate to be a worthwhile reward. The personification of the monument when Sassoon says, "peace–complacent stone" (line 7) creates the idea
that the monument has an unjustified feeling of self–worth and importance and stands arrogantly, believing itself to be a comparable reward to the loss
of life and misery endured by thousands of soldiers and families. The repetition of the letter "p" makes it sound as though Sassoon is spitting his
words out in a bitter and degrading manner and is effective in demonstrating his anger about the perceived ignorance displayed by the memorial
(Internet 10). Owen also achieves an emphatic effect when he uses alliteration in "Anthem For Doomed Youth" when he says, "Only the stuttering
rifles' rapid rattle" (line 3). This harsh sounding repetition of the letter "r" is used for the purpose of sound imagery to help convey the horrors of

The two poems are both written in different person, Plath's poem is written in first person singular and plural, second person plural and Grover's
poem is written in third person. In the Morning song, Plath's switches back and forth between first person and second person. The pronouns they
used are as first people singular and plural are: "I'm", "my", "our" and "I" and the second person she uses is "your", and "you". For example, "The
midwife slapped your footsoles and your bald cry took its place among the elements." In Time in renewal, Grover's uses first person plural and
third person. The pronouns used are: "it", "our", "everyone", "their". For example, "Crowd running toward and adjacent with a rainbow of color in
their hands, elegantly from every junction." They both use first person plural, yet Plath's uses First person and second person where Grover's uses
first person and third person. Similarities in these two poems are the characteristics they used to describe the concept of each poem. These poems are
discussing about flowers they used to explain the feelings of a person. For example, in morning song, Plath's uses flat pink roses to describe the baby
moth–breath that gleams among them; similarly, in time for renewal, Grover's uses white flowers to describe the voices of joy that brings the peace at
the land. The reason they are very similar is because they both talk about happiness and positive

Essay On Poetry Comparison
Poetry Comparison Essay War can be seen in different ways. On one hand it can be seen as an amazing feat that brave, courageous soldiers fought for
their beliefs and country. But on the other, it is a remorseful, callous slaughter. These two sides are perfectly expressed in the two poems: Sons of
Britain, by William Watson, and Dulce Decorum Est, by Wilfred Owen. Watson's takes the approach thatwar is honourable and Owen's takes the
opposite. Beginning with Sons of Britain the reader can see that this poem is promoting recruitment to war. The speakers intention with saying
"Perfect freedom is, for all who serve" clearly shows they are euphemizing the war. This makes sense because war is not free. Instead, it is brutal,
confined, and completely

In this paper, I will be comparing those similarities and differences between two poems. For this assignment, I have chosen the works, "The Bridge,"
by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening," by Robert Frost.
In the poem by Robert Frost, you read of a man taking a moment to enjoy the blissful serenity of a quiet snowy evening in the woods. It reflects the
enchanted tranquility of the moment. There is no disturbance, no commotion nor a bit of turbulence in the man's surroundings. Instead, there is a
peaceful beauty that he wishes to take a moment and enjoy. This poem takes you into the exact peacefulness of the moment he is experiencing.

Throughout both works you meet characters who are engulfed in a moment. Whether that moment is remembering someone you cared about, or
seeing the pure beauty in nature. The poets of these poems were both great writers in my personal opinion. They showed how just a few short lines
can make powerful emotions evoked inside of you. Within the writing created between these poets it can leave you thinking. Which is a good thing, it
can help you explore why it made you feel the way it did, or at least that was the case for me. The poems these authors created have outlived them, and
will continue to because poetry is an outlet, whether being read or created. Being able to relate to a poem is a great thing I believe. These connections
showed in the poem prove that you can find similarities where you don't expect it. Both of these poets are similar, because they want you to read them
and feel. Finally, I believe the connections between these texts, whether in the writing or in real–life, were amazing to find out about and put together.
In my opinion, I hope that these poems live on for my children and their children to read and learn about. Because these poem were both truly great
and wonderful to

Isolation In Poetry Comparison Essay

  • 1. Isolation In Poetry Comparison Essay Two poems can share a similar theme of loneliness, but can have different purposes to portray psychical versus emotional isolation. In Emily Dickinson's poem, "I felt a Funeral, in my Brain, she describes being buried alive at her own funeral to support a social isolation. While in Robert Frost's poem, "Desert Places", he describes the winter scenery to show how he is psychically isolated from society. Even though these poems share a similar theme, the narrators create lonesome feelings from their different settings. In "Desert Places" Frost describes the scenery in great detail. Since the poem in constructed around this description, there is distinct imagery which helps to visualize a secluded area in the snowy woods. He even includes Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Comparing Two Poems The poems I will talk about, are poems you may or may not have heard before. They are very different from each other. The first poem titled "Starry Night" was written by Anne Sexton a poet of the 20th century. The poem talks about a peaceful death wish by the author herself. The second poem "The Village Blacksmith" was written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. It talks about a blacksmith who works hard, and has had some rough patches in his life. These poems both talk about different subjects, and are filled with different poetic devices and elements. I picked a few to compare. The elements I chose, focus on showing the differences in the poems. The first comparison is dealing with the way both poems are written. "Starry Night" is written in Free verse. It doesn't follow a pattern or rhythm of any kind. For example "It moves. They are alive. / Even the moon bulges in its orange irons" (Sexton 7–9). However "The Village Blacksmith" does follow a rhythm. Here is an example from the text: Under a spreading chestnut tree The village smithy stands: The smith, a mighty man is he, With large and sinewy hands, (Longfellow 1–4). These lines are a clear indicator of rhythm....show more content... The author's tone in "Starry Night" is expressed in the poem when talking about the beautiful night. It says, "Oh starry starry night! This is how / I want to die" (Sexton 5–6). The exclamation point in the line shows passion in the text. And "The Village Blacksmith" has a rhyme scheme, which is shown in this example. "You can hear his bellows blow / You can hear him swing his heavy sledge, / With measured beat and slow" (Longfellow 14–16). The example shows the rhyme scheme which happens to be every other line as a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. My Poetry Comparison In my poetry comparison essay I have gone through a number of different changes throughout my essay. One of these changes I the manner of how I use language throughout my essay. For example, previously I used the lines such as "pilgrims and poetry readers are similar because of the trails they faced," now, after revising my essay the same line reads as such, "Pilgrims and poetry readers share a similar bond as both at one point or another must face hardship." Another example of something I changed in my revision of my poetry essay is the grammar I used. For example, one of the lines that I changed in my essay read as such, "when the pilgrims faced hardships, they simply had to tough it out." The know revised line after some grammatical changes, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. A Good Comparative Essay: GCSE Poetry Writing A Good Comparative Essay– GCSE Poetry You will be asked to compare two or more poems in your exam. You could be asked to write about the presentation of themes, people or places and the importance of language. A good comparative essay is like a multi–layered sandwich: BREAD – A new point. FILLING A– How one of your chosen poems illustrates this point. FILLING B – How your other chosen poem illustrates this point. BREAD – Your conclusion about this point. This is what the examiners call cross–referencing – you talk about both poems all the way through your answer. What the examiner will look for: When marking your essay, the examiner will look to see whether you have appreciated and explored the: ideas attitudes and...show more content... What is the Examiner looking for in an A* response to the Poetry? An A* response is characterised by a conceptualised, insightful and imaginative approach to the texts that combines an analytical and exploratory use of detail in each poem individually with evaluative comparison across both poems discussed in the answer. Essentially, an A* response will set itself apart from the hundreds of other responses because it has an individual and unique approach that shows the writer has developed their own individual ideas about the texts. This approach is characterised by a confident engagement with the themes, ideas, relationships and technical construction of the poems. Equally, the writer of an A* response will show comparative skill; making links and cross referencing the poems using telling detail to form the basis of insightful comparisons between the poems. At first this may appear daunting but with a ruthless and systematic approach it can be achieved. Essentially, the key to performing at this level is having your own ideas; if you can form your own opinions about each of the poems then you will be able to write this kind of essay. The real skill here is to marry the ideas that you have with a written style that allows you to showcase them in the examination.

  • 7. Poem Comparison The Difference in Similarity "Lady Lazarus," by Sylvia Plath and " "The Waking" by Theodore Roethke are two poems that relate directly to the speaker. Although both poems share this similarity, the way in which both works or literature are constructed are vastly different. Plath uses visual imagery and poetical tercets to show the pain and suffering of the speaker in her poem, while Roethke uses the musical Villanelle and synesthesia to create his picture of the speaker's inner thoughts and a sense of awakening. When reading the poem "Lady Lazarus" for the first time, the subject matter can be a little difficult to comprehend. The title of this poem and the speaker share the same name, ultimately making connections to the poet...show more content... A tercet is a three–line stanza. These stanzas are mostly made up of short, choppy lines with a mix of enjambment and end stop lines that can been seen as an example in lines 22–24 when the speaker says: "[This] is Number Three. (end stop)/ What a Trash (enjambment)/To annihilate each decade. (end stop). When read aloud, the words move quickly and forcefully. It almost sounds like the speaker is spitting her words out to the reader in disgust. This could relate to her overall feelings of disgust throughout the poem. This poem also has use of perfect rhyme and slant rhyme. One instance of perfect rhyme happens in lines 83–84, where the words hair and air rhyme. An example of slant rhyme occurs in lines 71–72, where the words burn and concern sound rhythmical. Also, there is use in anaphora in "I do it so it feels like hell" (line 46) and " I do it so it feels real" (line 47). While these various kinds of repetitions of sounds occur all over the place in "Lady Lazarus," they do not occur in a particular pattern. The rhymes have an off–kilter feel to them, and this allows the poem to be fast and free wheeling. The reader never knows when a rhyme or some other kind of repetition is going to happen next. I think it works to the feeling of the speaker very effectively because the speaker is in an erratic state of mind. "The Waking" is characterized as a Villanelle, which means an Italian word referring to a rustic song or dance. Villanelles have five tercets Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Comparison Of Love Poetry: Essay Comparison Of Love Poetry: Rememberby Christina Rossetti, How Do I Love Thee? by Elizabeth Barrett Browning and When We Two Parted by Lord Byron The three poems, Remember by Christina Rossetti; How Do I love Thee? by Elizabeth Barrett Browning and When We Two Parted by Lord Byron, each explore love and loss in their own unique ways. Remember is, as expected from the title, a solemn lament which is a farewell sonnet to her treasured one. How Do I Love Thee? is again a sonnet of love but is of a love that is present and hopefully will remain forever. The third poem that will be examined is When We Two Parted which tells of a lost secret love that has left a scar on Lord Byron's life. Elizabeth Barrett Browning's impressive...show more content... This also happens in First Love by John Clare where this rhyming structure stresses the fact that they were not as one rather just the one. When We Two Parted is particularly interesting as Lord Byron is frequently described as a womaniser yet he seems to express regret at the incident as, for once, it appears to have harmed him more than the other involved. The last poem to be studied in detail is Remember by Christina Rossetti. This is a patriarchal sonnet like How Do I Love Thee? but tells a different story. Remember is a sombre dirge acting as a departing message for Christina Rossetti's loved one. Also the separation between the octet and the sestet is much more evident in this, the first segment of eight lines is a reminder of the good times and how much she will be missed. But the second section of six lines acts as a messenger to tell that the time has come to move on. To live their life without the one soon deceased. We also know that this poem is genuinely heartfelt as Christina Rossetti had a recurring illness which was diagnosed sometimes as angina and sometimes as tuberculosis before finally dying of cancer on December 29th 1894. How Do I Love Thee? is thought by many to be the epitome of the love poem and I don't think anyone can disagree when reading the descriptions of faultless love. 'I love thee to the depth and breadth and height my soul can reach'. This is, perhaps, the best description of true love, showing Elizabeth

  • 10. Comparison of Poetry of a Different Culture We live in a society where culture and identity are very important. Culture is the distinctive practices and beliefs of a society. Culture is all about where we live, our language, the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the celebrations we celebrate and the things we value. Many people who live in poorer countries move over to the bigger cities were there are more jobs and money. Many people end up living in a place they don't know. In English we have studied five poems from another culture, which was Jamaica. All the culture poems we studied were mostly about a man or woman wanting to go back to Jamaica. Right from the start of the poem we learn that the poet's homeland is very important to him. The line, 'the steady breaking and wombing' is comforting, the word 'breaking' is a sea sound and the word 'wombing' is a surf sound. The second stanza is like the Caribbean man is coming out of his dream. The words 'Emerald Island' are a colour metaphor and he makes it sound like the island is precious to him. Emeralds are precious stones. The words 'groggily, groggily' are like an echo, reflecting the sleepy mood of the island man. In the third stanza we learn what London is like. The words 'grey metallic soar' gave a strong impression of the traffic and the city life. The line, 'North circular roar,' North circular is a road in London and the Caribbean man lives near it. The word 'heaves' means he doesn't want to do something but forces himself to do it. This verse is in complete contrast to the earlier images of Island life. In the last line the phrase, 'Another London day,' the man is saying that he is ready to face another day in London. The Caribbean man lives in London but wakes up in his home, which Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Comparison Poetry Essay Poetry Essay Each one of the poems offers a unique view upon love. The first poem by Robert Herrick, "To the Virgins to make much of Time," focuses upon the idea of carpe diem. The poem stresses the idea of marriage while love and flesh are still young and believes this gift of virginity to be a great waste if not given while it is still desirable. Marvell also uses the carpe diem theme to his poem 'To His Coy Mistress,' however with three certain sections within the poem. The first part elaborates on the idea of unlimited time; this then evolves a 'but' into the poem that everything must come to end and death catches up upon us. Then in the last third of the poem the word 'therefore' comes into play as the poet says that we should enjoy...show more content... Herrick tries to scare the reader into marriage, he does not with for them to be without protection but the carpe diem theme also suggests that they must go and seize the day, while they are still in prime and youth, so they are not wasted. This is summed up in the fourth and last stanza of the poem 'for having lost but once your prime, / you may for ever tarry'. Marvell also uses the carpe diem theme to his poem 'To His Coy Mistress,' however with three certain sections within the poem. The first part elaborates on the idea of unlimited time; this then evolves a 'but' into the poem that everything must come to end and death catches up upon us. Then in the last third of the poem the word 'therefore' comes into play as the poet says that we should enjoy the time we now have with one another. The main point of the poem is for Marvell to persuade his coy mistress 'to sport' (now let us sport us why we may) and at first glance appears to use conventional methods to get his time of pleasure. The 'Coy Mistress' within the title may imply a complicated relationship with coy meaning a shy, quiet reserved person, not the sort of person that one would imagine 'to sport'. Also the word mistress derives from the word 'master' and gives a sense of authority. During the first stanza of Marvell's poem he tries to persuade his mistress, praising her using conventional ways 'to walk and pass our love's long day'. Marvell explains that they will live and love one another Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Poetry Comparison Two poems that I could easily contrast against one another are Thomas Campion, "There Is A Garden In Her Face" and William Shakespeare, Sonnet 130. The two poems both discuss the topic of the poet's' love interest; in contrary to one another, Shakespeare's approach is more realistic, whereas, Campion's approach may seem more pleasant to hear its ideas are unrealistic. Campion states, "There is a garden in her face," to describe his love's immeasurable beauty and glow. Throughout the remainder of his poem, Campion continuously expresses that his beloved has more beauty than those objects created by God in nature such as: flowers, pearls, and angels. Shakespeare expresses his affect for his romantic companion in a way that shows that all though...show more content... In my opinion I believe that Shakespeare's poem is the one that I find to be more agreeable for me. The realistic approach of Shakespeare loving his partner with all of her flaw put a smile on my face because it shows that you do not need to be the textbook definition of perfect to find your own form of true love. Although every girl wants to hear that her boyfriend thinks she is the prettiest thing in the world, I think it is more caring if the emotions and feelings expressed towards you were meant was compassion yet seriousness. Having someone love me with my flaw is more important than someone ignoring my flaws and pretending that they see me as perfect, knowing that nobody is perfect. In conclusion, I enjoyed reading because of these poems but I find myself relating to Shakespeare's poem more because I connects with the everyday life that people are constantly living in, not the fairytale that people can only dream of. Shakespeare's poem, Sonnet 130, connects with the true and relatable meaning of falling in love, the type of love that has faults and imperfections, but with those imperfection a unique form a beauty is created, and that beauty in its own can be Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Poems And Song Comparison It is said that songs are just poems set to a catchy tune. Though Poems and songs speak to different people in the same way and vice versa to different people in different ways. Poem: A piece of writing that partakes of the mature of both speech and song that is nearly always rhythmical, usually metaphorical, and often exhibits such formal elements as meter, rhyme, and stanzaic structure. Song: A short poem or other set of words set to music or meant to be sung. The poem and the song share similar qualities as in their subject. From birth to death is something that relatedly touches everyone. They also speak on how to embrace life's changes and take on comes. Heartache was sent throughout the world and in spite of the senseless acts life went on. While the song "Dream On" was written in 1973, this era was known for its' free spirited thinking. As Steven Tyler wrote, "I know nobody knows / Where it comes and where it goes", the idea was to dream on while the youth was still intact since no one truly understood life's deepest form. • 14. A Comparison of Poetry Essay A Comparison of Poetry In this essay two poems will be juxtaposed. One of the poems is called "My parents kept me from children who were rough". This poem was written by Stephen Spender. Stephen Spender was greatly admired for his work and was knighted in 1983. He lived in the 20th century and died 22 years after W H Auden in 1995 .The second poem chosen is called "Funeral Blues and was written by W H Auden. W H Auden was a greatly respected homosexual poet who lived in the 20th century. He was born in 1907 and died in 1973. W H Auden's full name was Wystan Hugh Auden. He wrote Funeral Blues in 1936. In the poem "My parents kept me from children who were rough" a young boy is being bullied ...show more content... The rhythm in "Funeral Blues" is a very slow one which emphasises the sadness of the poet whereas in the poem "My parents kept me from children who were rough" there is a medium pace rhythm which accelerates gradually during the poem and then slows down at the end to a slow pace. Both "My parents kept me from children who were rough" and "Funeral Blues" have four lines in every verse but the amount of verses in each poem differ since the poem "My parents kept me from children who were rough" has only three verses whereas "Funeral Blues has four. In the poem "My parents kept me from children who were rough" all three of the verses are set in the past tense whereas in "Funeral Blues" three of the verses are talking about the present and only one is talking about the past. The verse, which is referring to something in the past, is the one that talks about the man who died. In the poem "My parents kept me from children who were rough" lines similar to "I feared more than tigers their muscles like iron" conjures up an image in one's head of large and very muscular boys. An example of the boys abuse and images, which is stated in the poem, is " And who threw world like stones and who wore torn clothes". This line shows us that the boys would use bad language and would dress very badly. The imagery in "Funeral Blues" is one of a heart broken man who is very sad and depressed Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Poetry Compare And Contrast Essay The two poems I've selected are "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" by Robert Frost, and "The Snow–Storm" by Ralph Waldo Emerson. Speaking in the story Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, is a man riding his horse through some really dark woods, trying to get to where he has to be. In The Snow–Storm, the author, Ralph Waldo Emerson, is speaking of a real cold winter storm that happens to delay everyone's daily activities that had been going on. Both poems center around the images of snow, however they differ in the way in how they describe the snow. The use of imagery is very well detailed in both poems. In Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, it says: "To watch his woods fill up with snow." Its showing that the woods were clear, Get more content on HelpWriting.net

It will explore the meanings of...show more content... Sassoon and Owen's rhetorical style help connect the reader to the events being described and communicate successfully their feelings of anguish about the war. Sassoon and Owen further communicate their contempt for the war and its unforgiving treatment of the soldiers through the use of alliteration. Sassoon says, "Paid, with a pile of peace–complacent stone" (line 7). The sarcastic use of "Paid" suggests Sassoon does not believe the Menin Gate to be a worthwhile reward. The personification of the monument when Sassoon says, "peace–complacent stone" (line 7) creates the idea that the monument has an unjustified feeling of self–worth and importance and stands arrogantly, believing itself to be a comparable reward to the loss of life and misery endured by thousands of soldiers and families. The repetition of the letter "p" makes it sound as though Sassoon is spitting his words out in a bitter and degrading manner and is effective in demonstrating his anger about the perceived ignorance displayed by the memorial (Internet 10). Owen also achieves an emphatic effect when he uses alliteration in "Anthem For Doomed Youth" when he says, "Only the stuttering rifles' rapid rattle" (line 3). This harsh sounding repetition of the letter "r" is used for the purpose of sound imagery to help convey the horrors of Get more content on HelpWriting.net

The two poems are both written in different person, Plath's poem is written in first person singular and plural, second person plural and Grover's poem is written in third person. In the Morning song, Plath's switches back and forth between first person and second person. The pronouns they used are as first people singular and plural are: "I'm", "my", "our" and "I" and the second person she uses is "your", and "you". For example, "The midwife slapped your footsoles and your bald cry took its place among the elements." In Time in renewal, Grover's uses first person plural and third person. The pronouns used are: "it", "our", "everyone", "their". For example, "Crowd running toward and adjacent with a rainbow of color in their hands, elegantly from every junction." They both use first person plural, yet Plath's uses First person and second person where Grover's uses first person and third person. Similarities in these two poems are the characteristics they used to describe the concept of each poem. These poems are discussing about flowers they used to explain the feelings of a person. • 18. Essay On Poetry Comparison Poetry Comparison Essay War can be seen in different ways. On one hand it can be seen as an amazing feat that brave, courageous soldiers fought for their beliefs and country. But on the other, it is a remorseful, callous slaughter. These two sides are perfectly expressed in the two poems: Sons of Britain, by William Watson, and Dulce Decorum Est, by Wilfred Owen. Watson's takes the approach thatwar is honourable and Owen's takes the opposite. Beginning with Sons of Britain the reader can see that this poem is promoting recruitment to war. The speakers intention with saying "Perfect freedom is, for all who serve" clearly shows they are euphemizing the war. This makes sense because war is not free. Instead, it is brutal, confined, and completely Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Poetry Comparison In this paper, I will be comparing those similarities and differences between two poems. For this assignment, I have chosen the works, "The Bridge," by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening," by Robert Frost. In the poem by Robert Frost, you read of a man taking a moment to enjoy the blissful serenity of a quiet snowy evening in the woods. It reflects the enchanted tranquility of the moment. There is no disturbance, no commotion nor a bit of turbulence in the man's surroundings. Instead, there is a peaceful beauty that he wishes to take a moment and enjoy. This poem takes you into the exact peacefulness of the moment he is experiencing. In the poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, you read of a...show more content... Throughout both works you meet characters who are engulfed in a moment. Whether that moment is remembering someone you cared about, or seeing the pure beauty in nature. Within the writing created between these poets it can leave you thinking. Which is a good thing, it can help you explore why it made you feel the way it did, or at least that was the case for me. The poems these authors created have outlived them, and will continue to because poetry is an outlet, whether being read or created. Being able to relate to a poem is a great thing I believe. These connections showed in the poem prove that you can find similarities where you don't expect it. Both of these poets are similar, because they want you to read them and feel. Finally, I believe the connections between these texts, whether in the writing or in real–life, were amazing to find out about and put together. In my opinion, I hope that these poems live on for my children and their children to read and learn about. Because these poem were both truly great and wonderful to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
