Sunshine and RosesPicking your wedding
flowers can be a big
decision, the flowers
affect the overall
look of your day.
From the ceremony
to the reception the
flowers can make
or break the look.
Always keep an open
mind to your florist’s
ideas, you picked a
professional for a
reason. But be sure not
to compromise too
much, you are the one
with the overall vision
of the day. Also be
sure that you love the
bouquet. It is the only
floral design that will
be in the majority of
your photos and those
photos will be hanging
on your walls, your
parents’ walls, your in-
laws, walls, everywhere!
To save a little money
you can make your
bridesmaids’ bouquets
simpler, and therefore
less costly, you want
your bouquet to be the
centerpiece anyway.
Valley brides share their
wedding day flowers:
“I used pansy flowers.
It was my parents’,
especially my dad’s
favorite flower, and
I used it in memory
of them since they
both passed away
before I got married.”
- Annette E. Maust
“I had beautiful white
roses that were dipped
in gold, blue and
silver - just the tips.
The special meaning
is for all the family
members who had
passed away and were
there with us in spirit”
- Erin Davis
“Multicolored roses
with seashells and
starfish mixed in.
They were special
just because they
fit my beach theme
so well and it made
my day when they
were delivered.”
- Becky Schmidt
(pictured above)
“My grandmother,
mother and I all
carried white lillies.”
- Kimberly Ann
“Gerber daisies,
tulips, roses”
- Ashley Strouse
Marino
“Ivory roses with
baby’s breath.”
- Krystal Parker-Boop
“I purchased silk
flowers from Michael’s
for my wedding. To
honor my fiance’s
deceased parents, we
put their favorite colors
in my bouquet. After
the wedding, I will
take the flowers and
incorporate them into a
wreath for our home.”
- Candice Stasheski
“White roses.”

9. October 2014 9
1. The very first thing
you need to do is ask
yourself two simple
questions: Do I want
to spend a lot of time
cooking? And what
do I plan to spend a
lot of time cooking?
There is absolutely no
shame in answering the
first question “no.” If you
hate to cook, own it
proudly. Don’t ask your
wedding guests to outfit
a professional kitchen
you will never get
around to using: instead,
ask for linens, lamps,
vases and other nonfood
items that you will
actually use. If you do
like to cook, be honest
and realistic about what
you like to cook. There
is no shame in knowing
that what you really like
to cook are the 20 quick
and easy meals you
were raised on. There is
also no shame in being
an extremist who has
to try the latest thing in
molecular gastronomy.
The important thing is
that you should keep
your style of cooking
and entertaining
in mind when you
create your registry.
2. Pick a “top-shelf
appliance” that goes
with the cooking that
is most important to
you. You shouldn’t have
all $300 items on your
registry, but everyone
is allowed one or two.
3. Don’t focus on
trophies. There are
probably millions of
unused KitchenAid
mixers sitting on
counters across
America. It’s an
awesome appliance.
But if you make one
batch of cookies every
alternate Leap Year,
then for heaven’s sake,
ask for something
you’ll actually use.
4. Don’t indulge your
fantasy cook. A better
gadget than your current
model, or a gadget
that does something
you already like to do
by hand: great idea. A
gadget that is supposed
to make you like doing
something you’ve never
bothered with before:
probable waste of space.
5. If a small appliance
won’t live on the
counter, skip it. There
are exceptions to this
rule: the ice cream
maker is seasonal, the
deep fryer probably
shouldn’t be used too
often, and the waffle
iron...well, no one I’ve
ever met eats waffles
every day. But this is
a good general rule,
and you should be as
ruthless as possible:
if it won’t live on the
counter, that means
you probably won’t
use it often enough
to justify owning it.
6. Forget the color
of the year for sturdy
appliances. In 10 years,
it is going to make you
want to poke your eyes
out with an Avocado
Green meat fork. It will
clash madly with your
new curatins, and you
will want to take it off
the counter to hide
it from your guests.
Pick white, black or
stainless steel for your
major appliances. Get
your pops of color
from curtains, canisters
and other small items
that you won’t mind
buying again every
five to ten years.

Traditional or
handwritten vows?
We wrote our own,
but the pastor also
did the “for better
or worse” bit as
well. One of my
favorite memories
from our wedding
is thinking about
how sentimental
we both were with
the vows we wrote!
- Amanda Irvin
Four out of the
nine responders
to a Facebook
poll went with
the traditional
vows, whereas
four others
wrote their own
and Beth Walter
said they did
“half and half.”
Readers shared with us a few details
from their wedding ceremony:
Letty McKinney: “Scripture:
Corinithians, because it describes
the kind of love we should have
for one another. The Lord’s Prayer
was played on flute as my husband
and I received Holy Communion
as the first act of our marriage.”
Annette Maust shared: “We used
our own vows and my brother-in-
law wrote a beautiful poem just for
us. Also used Corinithians “love is
patient love is kind” passage. We
also played the song “Holes in the
Floor of Heaven” in rememberance
of my parents who passed
away before we got married.

Popping the Question
Asking your significant other for their hand in marriage is a momentous
occasion, and it is a story that will be retold countless times. Here are a
few stories from around the Valley about how to get down on one knee.
Karen Hartley
“We were married September 21, 1968,
He proposed the Christmas before by
telephone. I received a package in the mail
and was told not to open it until he called
(of course it was a diamond). My future
husband was in the Air Force stationed
at Westover Air Froce in Michigan.”
Sonya Steiner
“My last game of softball ended. He had all
players on the field and me up to bat when
the pitcher released the ball all the players
surrounded the pitcher’s mound and he
traded places with the catcher without me
knowing, caught the ball and threw it bach to
the pitcher where the pitcher threw him the
box with the ring in it and got down on one
knee and asked right there at home plate.”
Jillian
Bastian
“We were high
school sweethearts
since February
2004. He proposed
to me Christmas
Eve 2008. We
had a country
western wedding
in October 2010”
Matt Dodge &
Kyra Longenberger
“I thought about getting the lights and tying
them together so when they light up it will say,
‘Will you marry me.’” Matt planned to take Kyra
to the top of the mountain at Tedd’s on the
Hill in Shamokin Dam for a nice scenic look at
the Christmas lights in Sunbury in December
of 2012. Once the couple arrived Matt texted
his brother to turn on the lights placed on
the stairs at the Sunbury ampitheatre. “I was
hoping we would be able to see the lights, if
not I had binoculars as a backup,” said Matt.
“I was totally suprised,” said Kyra, “Matt said
we were going up the mountain to see the
lights. I had no idea what was to come. So
I started looking. It was a clear night. He
told me to look in a certain spot, and that’s
when I saw the ‘Will You Marry Me.’ I started
jumping up and down, I was so happy.” When
she turned around, there was Matt, on his
knees, proposing. “I said yes,” Kyra repeated.
This story originally appeared in The Daily Item.

Jessica Deibler
“We had been dating for six years, but they were
during high school and most of my college career,
when I received quite a Christmas gift from him. I
had never been out of the country and he wanted
to be the one to take me somewhere special. So
he told me we were headed to the Swiss Alps
in late August. I had to wait eight months to use
my Christmas gift. Once we were in Switzerland,
we toured a few different cities and we were in
Lucerne when we planned a trip up the nearest
mountain, Mt. Pilatus. I still had no idea anything
was happening, even when we stopped on a
bench and he started to fidget. He got down
on one knee and I couldn’t believe what was
happening. I couldn’t even say ‘Yes’; only nod my
head. After we came back from the mountain,
we enjoyed a true Swiss feast, complete with
fondue. It was the best trip of my life and we were
married a year later and are now expecting our
first child. And he planned everything himself.

meet the cover couple:
Brittany Souder &
William Hackenburg
According to Brittany: My fiance and I met
on Christmas Eve back in 2011 at a local
establishment. He insulted my taste in music
and I knew I had to have him! I mean they
always tell little girls: “if a boy is mean to
you, they must like you.” From there on
we had a long distance relationship in the
works while he was in Sunbury and I was
in Virginia Beach. After three and a half
years, he finally proposed on Coney Island
during a Mermaid Parade in New York.

“Yellow cake with
buttercream icing
and blue piping with
flowers. Three tiers
with four smaller cakes

we announced we
were having a boy!!
It was so delicious.”

lemon filling, chocolate

blueberry filling.”

An unplugged ceremony, or wedding,
is when the couple asks the guests to
turn off their cellphones and cameras and
leave the photos to the professionals.
The idea is for your guests to be more
present with you as you say your vows
and not disconnected from behind a
screen “capturing the moment.”
A good way to announce you are going
unplugged is to put a small note in your
program and have your officiant make
an announcement before the start of the
ceremony. Another reason to go unplugged
is so that guests do not get in the way of
your professional photographer and possibly
ruin your first kiss by stepping into the aisle.
Remember to be polite if someone goes
against your wishes, most likely they are very
enthusiastic about capturing your big day.
A hashtag can be great for your wedding
to collect all your guests photos in one
place to look at while waiting in the
airport on your way to the honeymoon.
These photos give you many different
perspectives from the day that you would
not otherwise be able to experience.
But there can be some drawbacks as
well: you cannot control which photos
get published, so there may be a few
too many drunken photos in your feed
or photos from a different event with
the same hashtag. You can avoid this by
making your hashtag very unique. You
can also have a lot of fun with a hashtag
by creating a cute Instagram scavenger
hunt for guests during cocktail hour.
Remember to post it so your guests
know to use it! Put a little note on your
program or a sign by the door.

Something Old,
Something New,
Something Borrowed,
Something Blue...
...and a sixpence in your shoe.
25. October 2014 25
What’s in a saying? In
the old adage of the
“somethings” each
“something” represents
a wish for the bride
and groom for their
marriage. Something
old stands for
continuity, something
new stands for
optimism for the future,
something borrowed
stands for borrowed
happiness, something
blue stands for purity,
love and fidelity, and
the sixpence stands
for prosperity.
Brides from around the Valley
share their “somethings”:
“Something old: my mother’s
earrings; something
borrowed: my sister’s
necklace; something
new: my wedding dress;
something blue: the inside
of my wedding cake.”
- Randi Lambert
“Something old: necklace,
bracelet and earrings;
borrowed: veil; blue:
underwear; new: my
dress and husband.”
- Aryn Ewig
“Borrowed - my veil, old -
my grandmother’s garter,
something blue - my
garter, new - my dress.”
- Rebecca Cimino
“Borrowed and old was my
mom’s Bible she used when
she got married, new was
the ruby earrings my dad got
me, and blue was the garter.”
- Rachel Hendricks Kauffman
“Something old:
grandmother’s pearls,
something new: my wedding
dress, something borrowed/
blue: handkerchief from my
grandmother, something blue:
‘I Do’ letters on the bottom
of my wedding shoes.”
- Kelley Dravenstott
“Old - my brother’s lucky
medallion, borrowed -
necklace, blue - garter,
new - gown”
- Jane Mingle
“Something old: a necklace
of my mom’s, something
borrowed: a medal that
we put in the bouquet,
something blue: a blue ribbon
in honor of my son who
died four days before my
wedding, something new:
a pair of pearl earrings.”
- Sarah Hittle
“Something old: we used
part of my mom’s wedding
dress as our unity ribbon;
something new: my jewelry;
something borrowed: my
late grandfather’s high school
class ring pinned to the inside
of my dress; something
blue: the bodice of my dress
had a very faint blue in it.”
- Megan Daughterty
“Borrowed: anklet,
blue: garter, new:
dress, old: earrings.”
- Jennifer Keister
“Something old: my
grandmother’s wedding ring,
something borrowed: my
mom let me use my great
grandmother’s hankey (it was
stuck in my garter), something
blue: my garter, something
new: the earrings my soon-
to-be husband got me.”
- Alison Ludwig Bender
“My something old was
antique cameos pinned to
our flower bouquets. My
something borrowed was
an antique cameo from my
Aunt Jean which I returned
to her. My something new
was a modern white cameo
ring that was bought by my
cousin Angela. My something
blue was a Pandora bead
on a ribbon attached to
the inside of my bustle.”
- Chrystal Albertson-Keister
“Something old: my nana’s
DEAREST pin that my late
papa gave her, something
borrowed: my sorority
sisters’ badges attached
to my wedding bouquet,
something blue: my Penn
State garter, and something
new: my beautiful silver
rosary beads my mom had
blessed by the new Pope
wrapped around my wrist.”
- Aubrey Lynne Sejuit

A save-the-date is a pre-
invitation mailing which
officially announces your
wedding date and that
the recipient is indeed
invited to attend your
wedding. It is not always
necessary to send a
save-the-date but it is a
courtesy when planning
your big day around
major holidays or at a
destination that most
guests will be required to
travel to. The best time
to send these invitations
is a minimum of six
months before your
day, or eight months if
planning a destination
wedding. However you
can send these out as
soon as you know your
date and location to
be sure that as many
guests are able to attend.
Be sure you only send
out these invitations to
guests you know will
be on your final guest
list. This invitation,
even if informal, sets
an expectation that the
person will formally be
invited to your wedding.
And once the invitation
is in the mail there is
no turning back. A
good rule of thumb
is just to send to your
family and members
of the wedding party,
people who you know
you won’t cut from
the final count, and are
those you care most
about having with you
on your special day.
Remember to have fun
with your save-the-date,
it is meant to be a more
informal and relaxed
announcement of your
upcoming nuptials then
the formal invitation.
Be mindful however
that this invitation does
set the stage for your
event, so be sure that
they are a reflection
of your planning. The
save-date-cards are a
great way to show off
those engagement
photos you took!

How to (legally) Tie the Knot
The basics of getting a marriage
license in the state of Pennsylvania
include being over the age of 18,
or with custodial conset at age 17.
According to the Dauphin County
website “a marriage license may be
obtained from the Clerk of Orphans
Court in any county in Pennsylvania.
The ceremony need not be performed
in the county the license was issued,
but must be performed in the state
of Pennsylvania.” Basic requirements
are that “both parties need to appear
in person to apply. If either party was
previously married and divorced you
must submit a certified copy of the
final divorce decree. There is a state
mandated three-day waiting period
from time of application until marriage
license can be used. Licenses are valid
anywhere in the Commonweatlh of
Pennsylvania and are good for 60
days from date of issue,” according
to the Montour County website.
Both parties must also present photo
ID, drivers license or passport.

even want to get an extra copy, just in case.
The next step is to change your
Social Security card. There is a form
online which can be mailed in.
After you receive your new Social Security
card, about 10 days, head down to the
DMV to change your license. Bring with
you your old driver’s license, your marriage
license and your new Social Security card.
After you have your new driver’s license
you can start to change your bank
accounts. This is easiest done in person at
your nearest location. You will need new
checks, debit card and credit cards.
Then comes the fun part of changing
the myriad of other places where
your name can be found:
credit cards•
the payroll at your place of employment•
the post office•
utlity companies•
school and alumni associations•
professional licensing boards•
landlord or mortgage company•
insurance companies•
doctors’ offices•
magazine subscriptions•
voter registration office•
your attorney (update your will!)•
the passport office•
Changing your name
after marriage is both an
exciting and a daunting
task. There are many
steps to take before you
can officially share your
new spouse’s last name.
But don’t start the process
before you go on your
honeymoon, all your
travel documents need
to have the same name,
especially your passport!
