EPDs and advanced
technology,” Matt
said.
In just six short
years, L Ray Ranch
has built its herd
to now include 160
head of quality
registered Brangus
cattle, and they
utilize 10 to 15 head of
commercial recipients
for embryo transfer.
This method has proven to be successful for Matt, allowing
him to increase his production rate more quickly while
generating the kind of genetics his customers are seeking.
“One of the greatest things about the cooperator pro-
gram isn’t just the handling of the cattle; it’s having all of
that knowledge at your disposal,” Matt said. “Our genetics
consultant Timmy Lucherk is second to none, and you can
see that in his passion and his work. When flushing and
transferring embryos his successful track record gives me
the confidence I need when selecting future mating.”
Matt, along with all producers in the industry, has ex-
perienced the dramatic change in the cattle market. He
said having Mike as a valuable mentor and consultant
has enabled him to take more risks and avoid some of the
pitfalls that most new producers have to experience.
“For young ranchers like myself, in my early 30s, it’s
really important to be able to have a program like this,”
Matt said. “I recommend anyone who is getting started to
join the program, especially young ranchers. With cattle
prices like they are you can’t afford the mistakes.”
Matt said his main goal is to produce 500 registered
calves per year and sell 200 to 250 bulls per year. As a
benefit of the cooperator program, he will sell those ani-
mals that he does not sell by private treaty at the Diamond
D Annual Production Sale every fall. This year, L Ray
Ranch will have about 20 lots of bulls and females ready
to sell at the annual production sale in October.
M
ost cattlemen have a mentor of sorts; one who
has helped them get started in the industry,
overcome obstacles and challenged them to
become the best they can be. For Matt Willey, that man is
his father-in-law Mike Doguet.
Matt grew up in Kountze, Texas, on several acres just
large enough to have a handful of cows and a few horses.
He married his wife, Michelle, in 2011 and began learning
about registered cattle and the seedstock industry from
her father Mike who had been established in the cattle
industry since 1984.
“I could see the passion that he had for the business,”
Matt said. “If I’m going to invest in something, I’m going to
invest it in something I enjoy doing.”
Matt first bought into the cattle business in 2009 with
a cow-calf pair,
1019R17, he
purchased at the
Doguet’s Diamond
D Ranch Annual
Production Sale.
One of the first
things Matt learned
from Mike was
the importance of
building a strong
foundation herd with
quality genetics.
L Ray Ranch was
established in Nome, Texas, and as a member of the
Doguet Cooperator Program, Matt began building his herd
and growing his numbers without sacrificing quality.
Starting out with two really great females, 200L2 and
1019R17, helped him establish the genetic foundation
he would use to grow and strengthen his program. In the
second year, Matt purchased 25 additional females from
several different well-established breeders and has most
recently focused on conducting embryo transfer.
“I focus on flushing my females now because the prog-
eny are more predictable and accurate with the help of

Show Ring Spotlight
Doguet’s Diamond D Ranch customers are not only successful in
the pasture, but in the show ring as well. Ricky and Rhonda John-
ston with sons Luke, 22, and Jake, 17, own and operate Johnston
Cattle Company, a registered and commercial Brangus operation, in
Waxahachie, Texas. The Johnstons bought their first show heifer from
Timmy Lucherk, genetics consultant at Doguet’s, when Luke was
first eligible to show. After 13 years, their relationship with Timmy and
Mike Doguet has grown, and some prestigious titles have been won
535B20 owned by Don Grubaugh will
sell in Doguet’s Texas Best Sale April 11.

along the way.
His first year competing in the show ring, Luke won his
first show in Dallas with the first heifer they bought from
Timmy, 1252M, who is still productive and being used in
the Johnston’s herd. Since then, Luke and Jake have won
many shows around the country and have built a reputa-
tion as the ones to beat in the show ring.
The highlights of the Johnston family’s show career began
in 2006 when Luke won just about every show at the Nation-
al Junior Brangus Show (NJBS) that year including Reserve
Champion Bred and Owned, Champion Cow/Calf Pair as
well as Showmanship and the Futurity. Luke won the Owned
Female Show with his heifer, 209P2, which was purchased
from Doguet’s. The 209P2 cow is now a donor cow in the
family’s operation. To top it all off, Luke won the Owned
Show again the following year with 38R4. Also in 2007,
Timmy Lucherk showed DDD Lights Out 44P1 and won
International Grand Champion Bull in Houston. Lights Out
was purchased by the Johnstons in partnership with Mike.
“We’re very competitive and we like to win, but winning
shows is not our primary goal,” Rhonda said. “Our focus is
on breeding good quality cattle. We appreciate every win,
but our cattle still have to work and produce great results
out in the pasture and not just in the show ring.”
Jake has also achieved success in his show career and
was the Bred and Owned Champion in 2010 with 390W.
He also won the Owned Show in 2013 with 88Z10. In addi-
tion, he has several Cow/Calf pair wins under his belt.
“It’s something we have done as a family,” Rhonda said.
“More than anything, the wins and losses teach valuable
lessons and instill hard work. It also taught the boys about
preparation and doing their homework.”
Ricky said their investment in Doguet’s genetics have
proven to be advantageous and improved their bottom
line by producing more consistent, uniform progeny within
their herd. Now that Jake’s junior show career is almost to
an end, the Johnston’s goal will be to continue improving
their herd, raising and selling show cattle to help others the
same way Mike and Timmy have helped them.
“Timmy and Mike have always been helpful even in our
own program,” Ricky said. “We feel like the support they of-
fer after purchasing their cattle is just second to none.”
Johnston Cattle Co. purchased half ownership of
One Source for $19,000 at Doguet’s 2014 Annual
Production Sale in October.
The Herbert Clubb & Sons Cattle legacy began in
the late 1800s and now operates as a joint venture,
consisting of Harold Clubb and his two brothers, along
with a few of the Clubb family grandchildren who are
beginning to get involved in the operation. In addition to
their commercial program, Harold also farms rice near his
home in Hamshire, Texas, and that is how Harold came to
know Mike Doguet.
When Mike started expanding into the Brangus breed
more than 20 years ago, he sold about 40 heifers from
his foundation herd to Harold. Since then, Harold has
enjoyed doing business with Mike and using Doguet
genetics in his operation.
“Mike has always been really progressive, and we have
similar ideas about the kind of cattle we like and want
to produce,” Harold said. “He has developed a quality
product, and he ranks at the top of the list of breeders
who will produce the kind of cattle that are functional and
profitable.”
In an area near the Gulf Coast of Texas where the
climate is hot and humid, and much of the country is
muddy wetlands, Harold appreciates the attributes Mike’s
Brangus bulls provide his calves.
“Our goal is to produce calves that have at least ¼
Brahman blood in them, and Mike’s bulls are as close to
the complete package as you can get,” Harold said. “We
don’t baby our cattle; they have to be able to calve on
their own thrive in these harsh conditions.”
Herbert Clubb & Sons raise their own herd bulls and re-
placement females and annually introduce new bloodlines
into the herd. Harold has always utilized EPDs to assist
with his purchase selections and breeding decisions. In
addition to birth weight and yearling weight, Harold also
compares calving ease, quality grades, tenderness, docil-
ity, stayability, ribeye area and fat thickness. Harold said
utilizing DNA has been one of the most impactful tools he
has used to advance his operation by validating EPDs
and taking out the guess work in breeding decisions.
He points out using DNA to evaluate feed efficiency has
proven to return immediate profits.
“We test our two-year-old bulls and those bulls going
back into our herd,” Harold said. “Out of the 58 bulls we
tested, Igenity rated the highest scoring one a 6.8 and
the lowest a 4.8 on a 10-point scale. Only two points
difference demonstrates the high level of consistency and
uniformity in our cattle. I won’t even buy a bull anymore
that doesn’t have DNA recorded.”
Harold said Mike stays at the front of the line when it
comes to producing cattle the industry needs to be profit-
able, and is always willing to help his customers.
As a member of the Diamond D Cooperator Program,
Don Grubaugh could not be happier with the quality
animals being produced and the genetic outcome as a
result of the cooperator program, as well as doing busi-
ness with Mike Doguet.
“I feel very fortunate to be involved with and be able to
do business with Mike Doguet,” Don said. “I think he is a
quality human being not only as a person, but in the cattle
business as well.”
Located in
Sinton, Texas, just
north of Corpus
Christi, Don got
his start raising
Brangus cattle
about eight years
ago. After seeing
an ad for Doguet’s
Annual Production
Sale in the Bran-
gus Journal, Don
bought his first
cow that would form the foundation of his herd. He has ei-
ther bought or sold cattle in Mike’s sale every year since.
Due primarily to limited facilities, Don takes his weaned
bulls to Mike’s ranch in Poteet, Texas, for development
and finishing. As a benefit of the cooperator program, this
partnership allows Don to focus on building better ge-
netics and better quality into his cowherd. Don has per-
formed AI in the past and is now doing embryo transfer to
accelerate his breeding program. Once the bulls are de-
veloped, they are sold at the Doguet’s Diamond D Ranch
Annual Production Sale hosted every year in October.
“The thing about Mike and even his employees at his
operation is that they are always willing to help with any-
thing, and that is in any facet whether it’s selecting a bull,
branding or AI,” Don said. “Mike just surrounds himself
with quality people.”
Don said an additional benefit to participating in the
cooperator program is the ranch’s close proximity to his
own operation, and he is also able to obtain information
and stay abreast on what is happening in the Brangus
business.
Currently running 32 to 45 cows, including donors,
Don’s goals are to improve the quality of his animals, be
more dedicated to the Brangus breed, and at the same
time be able to enjoy the quality genetics and opportuni-
ties the Brangus breed has to offer.
