2. Texas Speak
“Hi, ya’ll,” is probably
the most familiar phrase to
Yankees, those non-Texans
that are passing through.
Those non-Texan’s that
decide to stay are damn
Yankees. My favorite phrase
is “fixin’, “ as in “I’m fixin’ to
show those damn Yankees
the highway!”
“It’s comin’ up a
cloud,” is our way of saying
“It’s fixin’ to rain.” A com-
mon expression of direction
is “yonder”, usually pro-
nounced “yunner”, as in
“Lookit those clouds comin’
up over yunner.”
Because it rarely rains
here in West Texas, we often
work from “can see to can’t
see,” which is really pro-
nounced “cain see to cain’t
see,” meaning from dawn til
dusk.
A common industry
here, where one might work
all day, is the “oilfield”, or
“ole field”, and I currently
work in the “ole bidness”, or
as you might say, “oil busi-
ness.” To hypothesize, one
might “borderhouse” his
guess, and if he is new to the
“ole field,” then he is a
“worm”.
“Bob War” is not a
person or event but a com-
mon fencing material you
might recognize as barbed
wire. We call the trunk of
our car, the “turtle,” and if
something is falling from up
above, we yell “headache”.
My grammaw often needs
“hep” changing her “light
bub’s”, and wants me to
“carry” her to town. My dad
“asts” me to put the
“battries” on his “dest”. So
when you are just passing
through, you might be able
to understand us when we
say, “Ya’ll come back!”
