State of Campus Address
Hi everyone.Thankyouall forbeinghere today!Robin Sharma,afamousCanadian,once said,
“Change ishard at first, messyinthe middle, andgorgeousatthe end.” Mental health andissueson
diversityand inclusion arose throughoutthe previousschool year. These issueshitourcampushard.A
campusand place that manycall home.
Internally,ASUPalsohaditsissues.Anorganizationthatrootsitselfonthe principlesof
representationandaction,seemedtobe lostinbickeringandego.The bigdecisionthatwasmade last
yearby ASUP, was the passingof the new constitution.Thisconstitution eliminateddormsenatorsand
addedtwonewpositionstothe Executive Board, calledthe Speakerof the Senate andthe Directorof
Communications.Thisconstitutionlookedtopave the wayfora betterandmore cohesive organization.
As the Executive BoardandI reflect onthispastsemester, many themescome tomind.
 Trust. You have to trust the process. You have to have full faithandtrustinone anotherforthe
systemtobe successful. We have earnedtrustthroughoutthissemesterbecause of our
determinationtosteerthe shipinthe rightdirection.
 Transparency. An organizationthathasthe ability tobe transparentgivesassurance toits
members.ASUPhasbeenanincreasinglymore transparentorganizationthroughoutlets suchas
the Beacon andsocial media.Whenwe make mistakes orwhenwe fail,we quicklystepforward
and ownup to them. We are able to be heldaccountable forall ouractions.
 Rebuild.ASUP recently wentthroughthe biggestrebuildingprocessinthe historyof the
organization.Eachand everydaywe continue torebuild.Thinkof those LEGOSyouonce played
withas a child. We continue tolookfor the rightpieces thatfit, and implementthemintothe
overall designof the structure,tomake itgreat.
All these themescircle backtoone bigpicture;the word, revitalize.Revitalize isdefinedas, making
(someone orsomething) active,healthyorenergeticagain. Thissemesterhasbeenall aboutrevitalizing
thiscampusand thisorganization.
Thisyear the universityhasundergone andseentangible changes. A new residence hall broke
groundlast springandwas finishedthisfall,namedLundFamilyHall. Thisbeautifulandelegant,castle
like building, ishosttothe 265 residentsthatcall themselves, the Wolf Pack. Atthe dedication
ceremonyof the residence hall, Mr.and Mrs. Lund gave an incredible speech, emphasizingthe
importance of family, faithand formation, valuesthatalignwiththe Universities. Forcedtriplesmay
nowbe a thingof the pastthanksto the additionof LundFamilyHall.Thisnew dormhashelped
increase housingcapacity,allowingourstudentstofeel more comfortablewithintheirresidence halls.
In additiontoLundHall,we have alsowelcomedinsome new facestothe Bluff.Matt Rygg, the
Associate VPforStudentDevelopment, andXanArch, the new Deanof the library, joinedthe University
thispast semester.Theyhave bothmade significantstridesintryingtoinvolvethemselvesmore with
students. 36 newstaff membershave alsomade theirwaytothe Bluff. We alsohave welcomedthe
newfreshmanclass,totaling965 newPilots.
Strideshave beenmade inthe rightdirection toensure students are aware of the resourcesthey
have on thiscampus. The Healthand WellnessCenter, formallyknownasthe HealthCenter, is
continuallyaddingresources forstudentswhoare battlingdepression,anxiety,andstress.A fourthfull-
time clinical psychologistwasaddedtothe staff. The institutional studentleave policyhasbeenupdated
to meetthe needsof studentswhotake time off fromschool formental healthreasons.UPhas also
joinedthe JEDcampus programto create a four-yearstrategicmental healthplantoimprove campus
policiesandservices. These implementations will pave the wayforthe future of ourUniversity.
We are in fact,a culturallydiverse campus. 42differentcountriesare represented byourstudent
population. Administrationhasheard fromus the needtodiversifythe facultyandstaff.Thispastyear,
16 percentof current facultyandstaff identified asnon-white,anincrease from12 percentthatwas
recordedin2014. However,thisisn’tanimmediate solution,butrather a stepinthe right direction.
Diversityisan issue thatnot onlyplaguesour university, butthe nation asa whole.Thisissue will notbe
resolved overnight, butthe studentbody shouldbe encouragedthatthe universityislookingatall
possible ways andangles toaddressthisissue.
GreenDot, a program that wasabsent lastyear, has beenrevitalized andbroughtbacktothe
University. TigerSimpson,the newWellnessEducationandPreventionSpecialist,hasledthe charge to
reincorporate bystandereducation tothe campus. One of Mr. Simpson’snotorious accomplishments
thisyearin hisnewposition, washisleadershipinorganizing ascreeningforthe movie ‘The Hunting
Grounds’followedbyapanel to discussthe impactof sexual assaultsonthiscampus. WithGreenDot
back on thiscampus, our students have aresource that wasdeeply missedlastsemester.
Sportshave a special wayof bringingthe communitytogether. The revitalizationinthe Athletics
Departmenthasbeenfeltall semesterlong. The women’scrosscountryteamsecuredthe WestCoast
Conference Championshipandraninnationalsforthe firsttime inthe program’shistory. The men’s
cross countryteamsecuredsecondplace inregionalsandalsoracedin nationals.Ourwomen’s
volleyball teamisenjoyingone of the bestseasonsinthe programshistory, highlightedbytwowins
againstranked opponents;#6BYU and #8 San Diego.The women’ssoccerteamcapturedthe
championshipforthe 2016 Nike Invitational andthe women’srowingteamsweptthe PortlandFall
Classic.A newera hasbegunin men’sbasketball asnew headcoach Terry Porterhas broughtinhigh-
caliberexperiencetothe program.Finally,ourmen’ssoccerteam, ayear removedfrom winningonly
one WCC regularseasongame, lifted the WCCtrophyonour home turf, earningthemanautomaticbid
inthe NCAA tournament. Ithasbeena spectacularfall seasonforall these programs.
Now that we have reflectedonwhathashappenedaroundourcampusthissemester,it’s time
to lookinternally. WhenVice-PresidentApenyoandIran for our rolesinMarch, we ran on the platform
“Plentytoeat andparkingyou can’tbeat!” Thisplatformconsistedof bringingfoodcartsto campusand
fixingthe parkingissue thatsomanystudents,staff andfacultyfacedona dailybasis.
In our platform,we talkedaboutimplementingashuttle systemthatutilizesRiverCampus.Our
proposal wasto allowmembersof the Universityof Portlandtoparktheircars downat RiverCampus.A
shuttle wouldtake anyone choosingtoparkdownthere, backto the maincampus.Overthe summer,
Vice PresidentApenyoandIworkedwithJimRavelli,the VPforUniversityOperations,totryand
implementthissystem.The shuttle systemwasapprovedinmid-SeptemberandonOctober3rd
2016,
the shuttle wasinfull effect.Tothisday, students, facultyandstaff mayparktheircars, free of charge,
downat Rivercampus, and enjoythe luxuryof ashuttle transportingthembacktothe maincampus.
Throughoutthe summer, foodcarts were onthe mindsof both myself andVice President
Apenyo.We workedtirelesslyeachweekof the summer,contactingdifferentfoodcartvendors,to see
whowouldbe interestedincomingtoourcampus.We workedwithKirkMustain,Fr.Donato,Matt
Rygg,JeromyKoffler,andothermembersof Administrationthroughoutthiswhole process.Duringthe
summerandintothe earlypart of this fall, withthe helpof JohnAkers,we were able todraftan official
contract, that allowedthe foodcartsto come to campus. In late September,we were granted
permissiontobringfoodcartsto campus. As I finalizedthe contract,Iincludedaclause that grantsASUP
8% of total gross revenue thatfoodcartsearn, each time theycome to our campus. OnOctober12th
,
twofood carts came to our campus forlunch. On November16th,
we alsoprovidedstudentswithtwo
foodcart options, andthistime brought inspecial international focusedmenus, tohighlight
International week.ASUPhasearnedover$200 because of the foodcarts, whichgivesusmore fundsto
allocate toclubswhenthey requestmoney. Asfoodcartscontinue tomake theirwayonto the Bluff,
ASUP will continuetobenefitfromtheirpresence, and additionallywill giveusa financial boostduring
budgetingseason.
Vice PresidentApenyoandIwere able torevitalize ourroleswiththe completionof our
platform.Inthe past,President’sandVice Presidents ranonplatformslike loweringtuitionoraddinga
secondplyto the toiletpaperoncampus.Studentsfeltlikethe platformswerenotbeingmettotheir
satisfaction.Inthe constructionof ourplatform, we made itso that the entire Universitycanholdus
accountable.Visiblechange wasthe theme of ourplatform, somethingwhere studentscanvisiblysee
the change on the campus and benefitfromthose changes.
I wouldlike torecognize eachof the Executive Boardmembersforall of theirhardwork this
semester. These five officersare some of the mostdriven, kindhearted, and knowledgeable leaderson
thiscampus.Each of these officershave revitalizedtheirindividualroles.
ASUP’sservices,whichconsistof PilotsAudioandLighting, PilotExpress,ADvantage,and
EspressoUP have beensteeredinthe rightdirection, thankstoVice PresidentApenyo. Hishardwork
and perseverance tomake sure these servicesare runningtothe bestof theirabilities, issomethingthat

We’ve accomplishedsomuchthis semester,butwe can’treston our laurels. Movingforward,
