Harvard Medical School Opioid Use Disorder Education
Program - My Journey, My thoughts: by Brandon L. Jonseck
discussion posted less than a minute ago by BrandonJonseck
Greetings HMS Students and Sta ,
I am posting here because I want to share some of my personal experiences and let you
know that I am super thankful to all of you who have been part of this Postgraduate
Education program. I want to thank the Harvard Medical School Sta for putting
together a fantastic program, the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP) &
the United States Department of Health and Human Services for funding the program
and making it possible, and my friend Sarah Gibson who has been a huge part of my
work on this subject..
Making a di erence from the ground level, the 313, to the White House in Washington D.C.Making a di erence from the ground level, the 313, to the White House in Washington D.C.
Something I have not shared previously, prior to completing this HMS program I worked
together with some very talented people in one of the cities at the ground level of the
opioid epidemic, Detroit Michigan, to survey them on which actions we needed to take
to combat the opioid crisis.
Our recommendations were then sent through the channels of Government, reviewed
thoroughly, and were part of the documents used that helped the White House declare
the opioid crisis a national Public Health Emergency under federal law. Many of the
recommendations we submitted were part of the nal Opioid Bill, known as the support
for Patients and Communities ACT, which was signed into law on Wednesday October
24th, and carried strong bipartisan support.
Opioids are a class of drugs that includes everything from heroin to legal
prescription pain relievers such as oxycodone, hydrocodone, codeine, and
morphine. The increase in deaths involving opioids is so large that it now a ects
average U.S. life expectancy negatively.
One major driver of the increase in opioid overdose deaths is the growing black
market trade of illicit fentanyl and fentanyl analogues, powerful synthetic drugs
far more potent than morphine. Another driver is the widespread availability of

prescribed opioids. As the number of prescription opioids in America quadrupled
from 1999 to present day, overdoses involving these drugs have jumped virtually
in lockstep.
Opioids: A National CrisisOpioids: A National Crisis
Upon completion of the Opioid Use Disorder Education Program (OUDEP), I was invited
by the White House to attend First Lady Melania Trump's Las Vegas town hall speech
"Opioids: A National Crisis". I literally just returned from this trip last week and am told
the town hall program will be aired on all Sinclair Broadcast stations across the nation in
the coming weeks. I learned rsthand that the rst lady is committing much of her time
and energy to combating the opioid crisis through her Be Best initiative.
See Washington video Post clip here, from "Opioids: A National Crisis".
Surprise RecognitionSurprise Recognition
Unbeknownst to me before arriving at the town hall, I was unexpectedly seated directly
in front of the First lady, and then subsequently brought up onstage by Liberty
University President Jerry Falwell Jr. and recognized for my e orts and willingness to
help ght this ongoing crisis from my unique perspective in the workplace.
As a consultant and a leader in the united states STEM Manufacturing, Tech, and Energy
industry's there are unique opportunities to help people struggling with this critical
opioid crisis and this program is crucial to help anyone who has a passion to take on the
stigma of opioid addiction. Together we have a real opportunity to combat Opioid use
and misuse through technology, education, and working together to further educate the
public at large, and at a local level, the people who we work with and communicate with
daily to better understand addiction and the opioid crisis speci cally. I was introduced
on stage to David and Jackie Siegel (owners of the Westgate Resort), and Eric Bolling
(New York Times best selling author and Fox News Personality), who sadly each lost their
children to Opioid overdose. Speaking to both the Seigels and Mr. Bolling the major take

away from our conversation was working to reduce the stigma of getting help when you
have an Opioid dependency. This is something we can all do through educating the
people around us to the severity of this national crisis.
I appreciate the invitation from the White House, and am humbled to have been
recognized for my e orts which are just a small blip compared to some of you Doctors
and medical professionals who are literally working hands on helping folks daily. I o er
you my full respect and adoration for the good that you are doing. Thank you.
This is truly theThis is truly the crisiscrisis next door.next door.
The e ects of opioid use and misuse are not isolated to work or home environments,
and the potential for addiction may be preceded by injuries that happen in the
workplace, with the consequences a ecting both an individual’s working life as well as
their home life. Sadly, close to 9,000 children and teens in the United States died from
opioid poisonings over the last two decades, representing a nearly three-fold increase in
mortality rates, Yale researchers said. These ndings illustrate how the opioid epidemic
continues to evolve and harm children even as e orts to confront the crisis through
treatment and limits on opioid prescribing ramp up, they said. This is why we spend our
time and energy combating addiction.
Thank you again to all of you who have put together this program, funded the program,
and who are spending your time and energy to help others who are su ering from
addiction and withdrawal. This Harvard Medical School educational initiative is critical
for the future of our country and you are all appreciated immensely for your e orts.
I close with a quote from the First Lady from her Las Vegas Town Hall Speech:
“I do believe we can be known as the generation that ended the opioid epidemic.”“I do believe we can be known as the generation that ended the opioid epidemic.”
I too believe it.
Thank You,
Brandon L. Jonseck
