 Based in Kansas City, Bradley DiTeresi has an

his free time, Bradley DiTeresi enjoys reading the works
of Doctors of the Church, from St. Augustine to St. John
of the Cross.
As explored in the Jesuit review America, St. John of
the Cross was much more than a 16th century prophet
who coined the phrase "dark night of the soul.” Rather
than the reclusive hermit of popular imagination who
painted a masterwork depicting the crucifixion, John
was a man of practical talents.

3. St. John of the Cross
 Among his noteworthy creations was an aqueduct at a
Carmelite monastery that is still functioning to this day.
He also traveled an estimated 18,000 miles on foot
across Spain, spreading the Gospel after being
ordained.
St. John’s greatest accomplishment was perhaps
embarking on a Teresa of Avila-inspired reform effort
that sought to bring the Carmelite order back to its
simple roots. Working with reformed Carmels, he served
as spiritual director and confessor while living a
mendicant life that befitted his devotion to God. St.
John’s writings were not aimed at the layperson, but
rather with “pastoral purpose” at the individual who
was ready to enter into a life of contemplation.
