A wireless camera jammer is a device that emits signals that prevent a wireless camera from communicating with an internet router or Wi-Fi access point.
2. Can someone disable a wireless camera using a jammer?
While wireless cameras are becoming pervasive due to ease of installation and efficiency, they are also at
risk of being compromised by intruders or individuals with ulterior motives.
One ostensibly risk-free method of compromising a wireless camera is by using wireless signal jammers
which work by incapacitating a wireless camera and stop it from working. They can also be used to
incapacitate any other wireless devices like doorbells and smart locks.
Wireless signal jammers can be small enough to fit in a pocket and are increasingly becoming available in
the consumer market, though their use in civilian applications is still very rare.
How does a wireless camera jammer work?
A wireless camera jammer is a device that prevents a wireless camera from communicating with an
internet router or Wi-Fi access point. This prevents the camera, which is internet-dependent, from
recording, transmitting audio and video, or sending notifications and alerts. It does this by emitting signals
that disrupt communication between a device and a wireless internet source.
Even though the use of wireless camera jammers is not pervasive, they still exist in abundance on the
market and come in different specifications and features. One of the most important features is the range
of influence, i.e., the distance that the jammer can effectively be used to interfere with signals between a
camera and its wireless internet source. Distances can range from a few meters to upwards of 300 meters.
The other important feature is the frequency. Some jammers can block a limited number of frequencies,
while others can block a very wide range of frequencies. They can operate between frequencies of 900
MHz to 2.5 GHz and wireless cameras predominantly use the 2.4 GHz frequency. The more frequencies a
jammer can disrupt, the more types of cameras or devices it can adversely affect.
Are jammers legal?
While jammers are illegal in most countries as they can be used for malicious purposes and their use is still
rare, it’s still critical to understand how they work. Jammers are most prevalently used in military or critical
government institutions or installations, hence why most countries might discourage or ban their use in
civilian applications.
How can they be used?
Jammers are frequently used in homes, offices, and places of business for a variety of purposes, most
notably for privacy.
For example, in public restrooms, locker rooms, or even hotel rooms, anyone with privacy concerns can
use wireless camera jammers to prevent hidden cameras from spying and covertly recording activities.
The downside can be that while they can prevent wireless spy cameras from working, they will inevitably
affect other wireless devices within range, like phones and security systems, and this will definitely
inconvenience other users or compromise security systems, which can be downright illegal.
3. They can also be used in the home to disable illegally placed devices like microphones or spy cameras that
might have been covertly installed during a break in or when travelling.
Jammers may also be employed in other situations; for example, during important meetings or events in
large corporations, or to stop exam cheating in educational institutions. However, these situations are still
extremely uncommon.
Protection
The best defence against wireless signal jammers, especially for security systems, is to hardwire security
equipment, such as cameras, alarm systems, etc. to the router, switch, or NVR, if that is possible and
practical. This eliminates the need for Wi-Fi.
Since hardwired systems are almost impossible to compromise from a distance, this can be the most
practical way of safeguarding security devices from signal interference.
