SUMMER
IN THE CITY
Even though the weather’s hot and
we just want to escape, there’s still
plenty to be said for spending time
at home during the summer.
First things first, you’ll want to
alleviate any stress you feel with
your partner – and that could be
as simple as tidying up as you go.
Check out our advice on the matter
(page 14).
Look over our Home Decor
article (page 10) if you want to
keep a teenaged daughter happy.
And for simple summer meals,
try a Danish open-face sandwich
called smørrebrød that’s packed
with bold flavours (page 8).
Then, for after-dinner downtime,
when you have time to relax,
ponder Jim Campbell’s Pen Point
column (page 6) on how change
disrupts many people’s lives, and
what we should do about it.
As always, we appreciate getting
your feedback. Enjoy your summer!

pen point | by JIM CAMPBELL
Whenever trouble strikes, someone
usually says, “Just remember, every
time a door closes another opens.” There’s
a lot of truth in those helpful words and also
in the observation, “It may be so, but it is
hell in the hallways.” With the disruptions
under way at the present time – Uber, low
oil prices, computer jobs going offshore,
robots in factories, more automatic teller
machines and fluctuating global markets,
many doors close and the hallways get
crowded.
As the relentless onrush of the electronic
age rolls out its marvels, it also creates high
levels of uncertainty for workers. These are
tough times. Recently Bill Gates, on PBS’s
Charlie Rose program, predicted that in the
next 30 years robots will be able to master
the complexities of doing the jobs now
done by personal care workers. This speed
of innovation and change shows no sign of
slowing down.
Many say this constant disruption is the
new normal and must be endured by those
in the hallways. Those who disagree, and
want to fight back, are often called Luddites.
That’s the name given to a group of English
self-employed weavers in 1811 (at the very
beginning of the Industrial Revolution).
They protested against new power-driven
looms that were taking away their jobs, their
income, their way of life – which had been
stable for hundreds of years.
When their distress was not dealt with,
they organized to fight back, and, in the
process, some of the new looms were
smashed. The government sent in the army
and punished the weavers severely.
Later, in 1830, in the south of England,
farm workers were also being displaced,
this time by threshing machines that caused
unemployment and drove down the
wages of those left working on the farms.
Some threshing machines were destroyed
and some crops were burnt. A group of
the protestors, the Todpuddle Martyrs,
were arrested, tried and sentenced to be
transported to Tasmania. The judge said:
“The land you have disgraced will see you
no more. The friends with whom you are
connected will be parted from you forever
in this world.” It was a harsh outcome for the
When constant disruption is the new normal, and some people never
find a door open for them, compassion is called for.

men who were fighting for justice, fairness
and for help with the distress of their families.
So, disruptions in the face of changes
are not new – and neither are the debates
about the process. Obviously, in the long
run, the weaving machines produced
more affordable clothing for people, and,
over time, mechanized farming produced
an abundant food supply for the growing
populations. Thus, many argue, change is
always good.
However, it is just as obvious that change
can create waves of suffering, producing
many whose lives may never get put back
together, who never find a door open for
them. One of the world’s great economists,
John Maynard Keynes, said, “In the long
run we are all dead.” We have to heal the
present as well as look forward to bright
new days ahead. We need to look after the
casualties of change.
I speak of casualties because it best
describes the reality. Workers are like
soldiers in the front line, who not through
any fault of their own, are not in control
of the forces that swirl around them. Like
soldiers, when they are casualties, they
need to be treated with compassion, with
respect for their contribution to the cause,
and supported in the adjustments that have
to be made in their lives.
As the rate of change increases,
employers, governments and our society
in general need to prepare to deal with
the economics, the innovations and the
casualties with more compassion and
respect. b

E
xtending from the scenic fjords of
northern Norway to the abundant fields
of Denmark, Scandinavia is home to
a varied and unique gastronomic culture.
It’s honest, simple food anchored by the
fruits of the sea and land, and boasting bold
flavours.
In Denmark, open-faced sandwiches are
called smørrebrød (pronounced s’more-
broad). They are typically built on thin
slices of dark rye bread. The version here
excels as a snack, hors d’œuvre or meal.
Pair it with Spring Potato Salad lightened

wine vinegar and grainy Dijon mustard.

In small bowl, stir together
ricotta, chives, capers and
pepper until combined. Spread
mixture over each slice of bread.
Arrange radish slices over ricotta,
overlapping slightly. Break trout into large
pieces and arrange over radishes. Top with
pea sprouts.
Spring Potato Salad
Scandinavians love their potatoes, and
adding fresh seasonal green onions, peas
and dill gives the potato salad a lighter taste.
Serve in lettuce-lined bowls, if desired.
Ingredients
1-1/2 lb (700 g) potatoes, peeled (if
desired), cut into chunks
1 lb (450 g) fresh peas
2 Tbsp (30 mL) white wine vinegar
3 Tbsp (45 mL) olive oil
1/2 tsp (2 mL) grainy Dijon mustard
1/4 tsp (1 mL) salt
1/2 cup (125 mL) thinly sliced green onions
2 Tbsp (30 mL) chopped fresh dill
Instructions
Place potatoes in medium saucepan. Cover
with cold water and bring to boil. Cover,
reduce heat and simmer until fork tender,
15 to 20 minutes. During last minute of
cooking, add peas. Drain well. Place in
large bowl; stir in 1 Tbsp (15 mL) of the
vinegar. Cool completely.
Meanwhile in small bowl, whisk
remaining vinegar with oil, mustard and
salt until blended. Toss potatoes with
dressing, onions and dill. Taste and drizzle
with a bit more vinegar if needed. b

teens
When putting a room together for
a teenager, use a single source of
inspiration to help ensure that a room
flows and that each element has a
purpose for the room.
ng a room together for
hen decorating a room for young adults,
it is most important to create a multi-
functional area. So much happens in
this space: studying, reading, music, hobbies,
hanging out with friends, fashion shows,
sleepovers and quiet time. It is a space of their
own, a place of comfort and an extension of
their personality.
A successful room layout for a teen room
involves creating several zones: for sleeping,
studying, dressing, hanging out and displaying prized possessions.
When my client and her 13-year-old daughter asked for a room with
blues and purples, and for it to be feminine but not too ‘girly’, I knew it
would be a fun project where we could infuse colour and texture.
We started with a great wallpaper from JF Fabrics in Oakville and
used it as the inspiration to pull the room together. The wallpaper
creates a wow factor for the room, and since it has several colours and
lots of texture, it was a perfect starting point. » pg 12

When putting a room together, using a
single source of inspiration will really help
to ensure that the room flows and that each
element has a purpose for the room. It
could be a fabric, rug, piece of art, or in this
case, wallpaper.
On the walls, we used a twist to a classic
style. Adding a chair rail, we painted the
bottom portion white and wallpapered the
upper portion for a dramatic effect. We
kept the ceiling classic white and installed a
whimsical and pretty shell chandelier.
I always design a bedroom around the
bed, using it as the main focal point. We
placed the bed across from the door to the
room, on the far wall, with a bench at its
foot, adding a pop of royal blue in an ikat-
influenced pattern.
For the desk area, we added some easy
glam to the teen’s old desk by topping
it with a custom-cut mirror and adding
glamorous crystal knobs. The client had an
antique armchair that was not being used,
so we had it painted and reupholstered,
which made it into a character piece. On
the wall above the desk, we hung a shelf
and corkboard, which provided a home for
collectables.
The window’s existing bench seat was

finished with a stylish croc vinyl in metallic
grey and then complemented with an
eclectic mix of pillows of different colours
and patterns that all co-ordinated with the
wallpaper scheme.
For the window treatment, we had a
custom valance made from an adorable
Kravet fabric with a gentle curve and
pretty box pleats. And for room darkening,
a blackout waterfall roman shade was
installed. I often suggest this look to my
clients, as machine-made blinds are more
durable and easy to operate compared to
custom-made fabric roman shades, and
they also are more cost-effective overall.
We are delighted with how the room
came together for our young client. It is
a fun and vibrant room, while still being
classic and elegant, and it will grow with
her throughout her teen years. b

Putting things back where we found
them is something we were taught in
kindergarten. In fact, it’s one of the credos
Robert Fulghum shares in his book,
All I Really Need to Know I Learned in
Kindergarten.
It’s simple, really. Instead of dropping
things in random places to be put away
later, if we put things back in the proper
places as soon as we are finished using
them, our home will always look tidy, and
with hardly any effort.
The few seconds it takes to do this is
nothing compared to the time it takes to
look for something that wasn’t put back in
its proper home. We actually save time and
feel less stress because we can find things
when we need them. So why don’t we do it?
I bet some of you are saying, it’s not me,
it’s him (or her). One of the most common
things couples fight about is the division
of domestic responsibilities. Resentment
builds when one partner feels the load is
not shared equally. What do you do if one
person usually puts things away while the
other leaves things strewn about?
I heard about a woman who was so fed

stuff lying around, she would pile it all on
his side of the bed. He couldn’t get into bed
without moving the stuff. Eventually, he
learned it was better to put stuff away as he
went along. I feel that’s a little extreme. It’s
never a good idea for couples to turn their
bedroom into a battlefield.
My suggestion is to meet halfway; the
neat one could get a little less compulsive
in picking up, and the messy one could get
a little tidier. Couples need to do this not
only to save their own sanity but for the
sake of their relationship.
Here are some strategies to make this
habit easier to implement:
Assign a home
Make sure you have assigned proper
homes to things (e.g., bills in the ‘to pay’
tray, keys in the bowl by the entrance).
Without that, items will just get moved from
pile to pile or get stuffed haphazardly into
drawers.
Use step baskets
If you live in a home with more than
one floor, use a basket near the steps. In the
basket on the bottom floor, deposit each
item that belongs on the next floor. When
you are heading upstairs, grab the basket
and put away the contents immediately
(not tomorrow). You can also keep a
basket near the top of the stairs for items
that need to go downstairs. Keep the cycle
going and swap the baskets out.
Adopting this simple habit of putting
things back when you are finished using
them will go a long way in maintaining
the tidiness of your home with minimal
time and effort. It may also improve your
relationship with your partner. b

NOTES
ON LIFE IN
NUNAVUT
Canadians living in Nunavut have a life expectancy
almost 10 years shorter than those in the rest of
Canada.
In Nunavut, 33,330 people – 84 per cent of whom
are Inuit – live in 25 communities.
There are no roads connecting to or between the
25 communities in Nunavut, although there is
sea access for up to four months a year. It is the
only geo-political region of Canada that is not
connected to the rest of North America by
highway.
There are no banks or doctors in most
communities in Nunavut.
The Nunavut territory covers 2.1 million square
kilometres of land, which is about one-fifth of
Canada’s land mass. It is about the same area as
Greenland.
Nunavut is home to the northernmost
permanently inhabited place in the world, Alert.
Nunavut was separated officially from Canada’s
Northwest Territories on April 1, 1999. Its capital
is Iqaluit (formerly Frobisher Bay) on Baffin Island.

SUMMER IN THE CITY Even though the weather’s hot and we just want to escape, there’s still plenty to be said for spending time at home during the summer. First things first, you’ll want to alleviate any stress you feel with your partner – and that could be as simple as tidying up as you go. Check out our advice on the matter (page 14). Look over our Home Decor article (page 10) if you want to keep a teenaged daughter happy. And for simple summer meals, try a Danish open-face sandwich called smørrebrød that’s packed with bold flavours (page 8). Then, for after-dinner downtime, when you have time to relax, ponder Jim Campbell’s Pen Point column (page 6) on how change disrupts many people’s lives, and what we should do about it. • 6. 6 | HOMEdigest | Summer 2016 pen point | by JIM CAMPBELL Whenever trouble strikes, someone usually says, “Just remember, every time a door closes another opens.” There’s a lot of truth in those helpful words and also in the observation, “It may be so, but it is hell in the hallways.” With the disruptions under way at the present time – Uber, low oil prices, computer jobs going offshore, robots in factories, more automatic teller machines and fluctuating global markets, many doors close and the hallways get crowded. As the relentless onrush of the electronic age rolls out its marvels, it also creates high levels of uncertainty for workers. These are tough times. Recently Bill Gates, on PBS’s Charlie Rose program, predicted that in the next 30 years robots will be able to master the complexities of doing the jobs now done by personal care workers. This speed of innovation and change shows no sign of slowing down. Many say this constant disruption is the new normal and must be endured by those in the hallways. Those who disagree, and want to fight back, are often called Luddites. That’s the name given to a group of English self-employed weavers in 1811 (at the very beginning of the Industrial Revolution). They protested against new power-driven looms that were taking away their jobs, their income, their way of life – which had been stable for hundreds of years. When their distress was not dealt with, they organized to fight back, and, in the process, some of the new looms were smashed. The government sent in the army and punished the weavers severely. Later, in 1830, in the south of England, farm workers were also being displaced, this time by threshing machines that caused unemployment and drove down the wages of those left working on the farms. Some threshing machines were destroyed and some crops were burnt. A group of the protestors, the Todpuddle Martyrs, were arrested, tried and sentenced to be transported to Tasmania. The judge said: “The land you have disgraced will see you no more. The friends with whom you are connected will be parted from you forever in this world.” It was a harsh outcome for the When constant disruption is the new normal, and some people never find a door open for them, compassion is called for. So, disruptions in the face of changes are not new – and neither are the debates about the process. Obviously, in the long run, the weaving machines produced more affordable clothing for people, and, over time, mechanized farming produced an abundant food supply for the growing populations. Thus, many argue, change is always good. However, it is just as obvious that change can create waves of suffering, producing many whose lives may never get put back together, who never find a door open for them. One of the world’s great economists, John Maynard Keynes, said, “In the long run we are all dead.” We have to heal the present as well as look forward to bright new days ahead. We need to look after the casualties of change. I speak of casualties because it best describes the reality. Workers are like soldiers in the front line, who not through any fault of their own, are not in control of the forces that swirl around them. Like soldiers, when they are casualties, they need to be treated with compassion, with respect for their contribution to the cause, and supported in the adjustments that have to be made in their lives. As the rate of change increases, employers, governments and our society in general need to prepare to deal with the economics, the innovations and the casualties with more compassion and respect. b Jim Campbell is an Oakville author, writer and long-time contributor to HOMEdigest. His most recent book, ‘Glimpses Through the Mirror: The Collected Pen Point Columns’, is available online at Indigo.ca and Amazon.ca. • 10. 10 | HOMEdigest | Summer 2016 home decor | by KATE DAVIDSON stylish spaces for teens When putting a room together for a teenager, use a single source of inspiration to help ensure that a room flows and that each element has a purpose for the room. ng a room together for hen decorating a room for young adults, it is most important to create a multi- functional area. So much happens in this space: studying, reading, music, hobbies, hanging out with friends, fashion shows, sleepovers and quiet time. It is a space of their own, a place of comfort and an extension of their personality. A successful room layout for a teen room involves creating several zones: for sleeping, studying, dressing, hanging out and displaying prized possessions. When my client and her 13-year-old daughter asked for a room with blues and purples, and for it to be feminine but not too ‘girly’, I knew it would be a fun project where we could infuse colour and texture. We started with a great wallpaper from JF Fabrics in Oakville and used it as the inspiration to pull the room together. The wallpaper creates a wow factor for the room, and since it has several colours and lots of texture, it was a perfect starting point. » pg 12 Roomimages:KateDavidson.Inset:jaroon,istock.com

  • 12. 12 | HOMEdigest | Summer 2016 home decor | continued from page 10 When putting a room together, using a single source of inspiration will really help to ensure that the room flows and that each element has a purpose for the room. It could be a fabric, rug, piece of art, or in this case, wallpaper. On the walls, we used a twist to a classic style. Adding a chair rail, we painted the bottom portion white and wallpapered the upper portion for a dramatic effect. We kept the ceiling classic white and installed a whimsical and pretty shell chandelier. I always design a bedroom around the bed, using it as the main focal point. We placed the bed across from the door to the room, on the far wall, with a bench at its foot, adding a pop of royal blue in an ikat- influenced pattern. For the desk area, we added some easy glam to the teen’s old desk by topping it with a custom-cut mirror and adding glamorous crystal knobs. The client had an antique armchair that was not being used, so we had it painted and reupholstered, which made it into a character piece. On the wall above the desk, we hung a shelf and corkboard, which provided a home for collectables. The window’s existing bench seat was I always design a bedroom around the bed, using it as the main focal point. 416-283-5500
  • 13. Summer 2016 | HOMEdigest | 13 finished with a stylish croc vinyl in metallic grey and then complemented with an eclectic mix of pillows of different colours and patterns that all co-ordinated with the wallpaper scheme. For the window treatment, we had a custom valance made from an adorable Kravet fabric with a gentle curve and pretty box pleats. And for room darkening, a blackout waterfall roman shade was installed. I often suggest this look to my clients, as machine-made blinds are more durable and easy to operate compared to custom-made fabric roman shades, and they also are more cost-effective overall. We are delighted with how the room came together for our young client. It is a fun and vibrant room, while still being classic and elegant, and it will grow with her throughout her teen years. b Accredited designer Kate Davidson is the principal of Kate Davidson Design Inc., a multi- disciplinary interior design firm that provides complete design, renovating and decorating services throughout the GTA. • 14. 14 | HOMEdigest | Summer 2016 getting organized | by HELLEN BUTTIGIEG om would remind me every day when I came home from school to put my shoes where they belong. It took some time, but eventually it became a habit. Putting things back where we found them is something we were taught in kindergarten. In fact, it’s one of the credos Robert Fulghum shares in his book, All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. It’s simple, really. Instead of dropping things in random places to be put away later, if we put things back in the proper places as soon as we are finished using them, our home will always look tidy, and with hardly any effort. The few seconds it takes to do this is nothing compared to the time it takes to look for something that wasn’t put back in its proper home. We actually save time and feel less stress because we can find things when we need them. So why don’t we do it? I bet some of you are saying, it’s not me, it’s him (or her). One of the most common things couples fight about is the division of domestic responsibilities. Resentment builds when one partner feels the load is not shared equally. What do you do if one person usually puts things away while the other leaves things strewn about? I heard about a woman who was so fed up with her husband’s habit of leaving his You can reduce stress and maybe even save your relationship by putting things away as you go. He couldn’t get into bed without moving the stuff. Eventually, he learned it was better to put stuff away as he went along. I feel that’s a little extreme. It’s never a good idea for couples to turn their bedroom into a battlefield. My suggestion is to meet halfway; the neat one could get a little less compulsive in picking up, and the messy one could get a little tidier. Couples need to do this not only to save their own sanity but for the sake of their relationship. Here are some strategies to make this habit easier to implement: Assign a home Make sure you have assigned proper homes to things (e.g., bills in the ‘to pay’ tray, keys in the bowl by the entrance). Without that, items will just get moved from pile to pile or get stuffed haphazardly into drawers. Use step baskets If you live in a home with more than one floor, use a basket near the steps. In the basket on the bottom floor, deposit each item that belongs on the next floor. When you are heading upstairs, grab the basket and put away the contents immediately (not tomorrow). You can also keep a basket near the top of the stairs for items that need to go downstairs. Keep the cycle going and swap the baskets out. Adopting this simple habit of putting things back when you are finished using them will go a long way in maintaining the tidiness of your home with minimal time and effort. It may also improve your relationship with your partner. b Hellen Buttigieg, CPO, is a certified professional organizer, life coach, TV personality, author and speaker. In Nunavut, 33,330 people – 84 per cent of whom are Inuit – live in 25 communities. There are no roads connecting to or between the 25 communities in Nunavut, although there is sea access for up to four months a year. It is the only geo-political region of Canada that is not connected to the rest of North America by highway. There are no banks or doctors in most communities in Nunavut. The Nunavut territory covers 2.1 million square kilometres of land, which is about one-fifth of Canada’s land mass. It is about the same area as Greenland. Nunavut is home to the northernmost permanently inhabited place in the world, Alert. Nunavut was separated officially from Canada’s Northwest Territories on April 1, 1999.
