2. The Lord was gracious to Sarah and did for her as He had promised. So Sarah
conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the appointed time of
which God had spoken to him.

3. Abraham called the name of his son, whom Sarah bore to him, Isaac. Isaac means
“he laughs.” Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to
him. Abraham lovingly watched his son grow from being a baby into a young boy.

4. God then decided to test Abraham. “Take your son who you love, Isaac, to the
region of Moriah and sacrifice him as a burnt offering on a mountain which I will
show you.”

5. Early the next morning, Abraham got up and loaded up his donkey and then took
with him two servants and his son Isaac. When he cut enough wood for a burnt
offering, he set off on a journey towards Moriah.

6. After travelling for three days, Abraham saw the mountain in the distance. He
instructed the two servants to stay with the donkey while he and Isaac went up
the mountain to worship God.

7. Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on Isaac to carry while
he carried the fire and the knife.

8. On the way Isaac asked, “Father, the fire and wood are here, but where is the lamb
for the burnt offering?” Abraham replied, “God himself will provide the lamb for
the burnt offering.” The two of them continued their climb to the place God had
told Abraham.

9. Abraham built an altar and then arranged the wood on it.

10. Then he bound Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. He reached out
his hand and took the knife to slay his son. “Abraham! Abraham!” an angel of the
Lord called out to him. “Do not lay a hand on the boy. Now, I know you fear God
because you have not withheld from me your son.”

11. Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. He took the
ram and offered it as a burnt offering instead of Isaac. He then named the place,
“The Lord will provide.”

12. The angel then spoke again, “As you have not withheld your only son,
God will bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the
sky and as the sand on the seashore. Through your offspring all nations on earth
will be blessed because you obeyed me.”

13. Abraham and Isaac then returned to the waiting servants and set off to Beersheba
where they stayed.
