The document discusses conventions of lighting, sound, editing, costume, makeup, and props commonly seen in post-apocalyptic films. It provides examples from films like A Boy and His Dog, The Maze Runner, The Road, and The Hunger Games. For lighting, it notes the use of dull colors to depict a bleak post-apocalyptic setting. Sound effects often include industrial noises or signs of danger. Editing frequently employs a black and white or sepia color palette. Costuming tends toward plain, dull-colored clothing. Makeup aims for a natural look, though some have exaggerated features. Props feature microphones, bows and arrows, and other items relevant to the story.
2. LIGHTING
n the post-apocalyptic film ‘A boy and his dog’ there
is daylight, due to majority of the film being shot
throughout the day.
However, the setting adds contrast to the lighting
as the usage of a desert creates dullness due to the
grey/brown colours of the background. Therefore
we get the idea of a post-apocalyptic genre
present.
3. SOUND
n the opening of the film ‘The maze runner’ we can hear
footsteps and opening of big metal doors almost like prison
doors, however everything is black. Then we hear factory-like noises as it shows a man on top of a
metal caged lift, this indicates that the clanking heard is the
functioning of the lift. Also, the sound of some sort of
aggressive creature occurs throughout the opening, ending with
the sound of an explosion followed by ringing of a building
alarm.
4. EDITING
hroughout The Road opening scene, it is clear that
it has been edited to have a black and white/sepia
look.
This has been done to relate
to the post apocalyptic genre, which consists of mostly grey and
green colours as it makes it look dull and almost as though a
significant event has occur to make life seem different.
5. MES- COSTUME
ostume- At the beginning of the opening scene, everybody is
wearing dull or white clothing, dresses for the females and top and
trousers for the males. The guards are wearing white tops with beige
dungaree-styled trousers over the top with black knee-high
wellie/boots and a white riding styled hat with a black stripe over the
middle. However the women speaking into the microphone is wearing
bright pink, which stands out from everybody else. This could link to her
authority. Alongside this, there are people sat to her left and right
wearing black suits and dresses which could also link to higher status and
wealth.
6. MES- MAKE UP
he make-up for the females in ‘The hunger games’ are made
to look natural and as though they don’t wear any.
However the lady in pink has a lot of exaggerated
make-up which is clearly visible. Her face is very pale,
which contrasts to the pinkness of her eye-shadow
and lipstick.
7. MES- PROPS
ithin the film opening of ‘The hunger games’
multiple props are used, firstly a microphone
which the woman in pink is holding. Also a big
glass bowl is used to hold the cards with the
peoples names on, Athltaht otuhgehy pthiceks eo aurte a tth rea nodnolym p. rops throughout the
