Q22  We welcome your written comments below. What is something/are some things that the
instructor does well, e.g., something you hope that the instructor will continue to do in the class in
the future?
Faculty: Wiles, Benjamin C
Response Rate: 42.86%   (6 of 14)

Ben is very clear on the big picture. It really helped when he would take a step back to show the big pictue of
what was going on (ie. making a list on the board of the different techniques we've used and how this new one
fits in).

Good job at taking questions, explaining things people asked about, covering the material to be asked about in
homework.
 Great instructor
You teach the new course material very well and because of that I never had to read the book! :)

This is one of the best math instructors I've had at Purdue. He does a great job explaining new sections in the
context of where the course has gone and where it is going.

Prof. Wiles has been one of the best teachers that I've ever had in all of my math classes at Purdue. Having
him as a professor greatly helped my understanding of the material.

Q23  Make a suggestion(s) for improving the course (a criticism alone is not helpful; tell your
instructor how you would fix any problem).
Faculty: Wiles, Benjamin C
Response Rate: 28.57%   (4 of 14)

Sometimes having each instructor write his/her own exams is detrimental because each class can have very
different curves, and yet all the individual classes create the grade distribution at the end of the semester. So
maybe have one common exam written by all the instructors instead of different ones from different
instructors.

You should work out the supplemental problems and have the solution ready with you! Because throughout the
semester you repeated the same thing that you don't have the solutions. Also, please work out each and every
step of a new topic because you skip some steps and is difficult to follow. And you make a lot of silly mistakes!

My only complaint is that he would frequently explain his work while facing the board and blocking it with his
body. We could not see what he had been talking about until he moved to a different part of the board. In my
opinion, he could easily remedy this by stepping to the side and briefly recapping each step.

If things written on the board were not erased almost right after they were explained, my notebook would
probably be a lot more complete. Sometimes it's not that easy to comtemplate and copy at the same time.

Faculty: Wiles, Benjamin C Response Rate: 42.86%   (6 of 14) Ben is very clear on the big picture. It really helped when he would take a step back to show the big pictue of what was going on (ie. making a list on the board of the different techniques we've used and how this new one fits in). Good job at taking questions, explaining things people asked about, covering the material to be asked about in homework. Great instructor You teach the new course material very well and because of that I never had to read the book! :) This is one of the best math instructors I've had at Purdue. He does a great job explaining new sections in the context of where the course has gone and where it is going. Prof. Wiles has been one of the best teachers that I've ever had in all of my math classes at Purdue. Having him as a professor greatly helped my understanding of the material.   Q23  Make a suggestion(s) for improving the course (a criticism alone is not helpful; tell your instructor how you would fix any problem). Faculty: Wiles, Benjamin C Response Rate: 28.57%   (4 of 14) Sometimes having each instructor write his/her own exams is detrimental because each class can have very different curves, and yet all the individual classes create the grade distribution at the end of the semester. So maybe have one common exam written by all the instructors instead of different ones from different instructors. You should work out the supplemental problems and have the solution ready with you! Because throughout the semester you repeated the same thing that you don't have the solutions. Also, please work out each and every step of a new topic because you skip some steps and is difficult to follow. And you make a lot of silly mistakes! My only complaint is that he would frequently explain his work while facing the board and blocking it with his body. We could not see what he had been talking about until he moved to a different part of the board. In my opinion, he could easily remedy this by stepping to the side and briefly recapping each step. If things written on the board were not erased almost right after they were explained, my notebook would probably be a lot more complete. Sometimes it's not that easy to comtemplate and copy at the same time.
