3. Context of Southern Auckland (The South)
In The South, Auckland
Transport
predicts:
• 13,000 more jobs
• 50,000 new households
• 120,000 more people
• All just in SHA and FUZ areas
• Does not include existing
urban areas such as the
Metropolitan Centres
Current Population:
Southern Initiative Area: 393,000
• Southern Auckland: 550,000 approx.
8/12/2015 Ben Ross. presentation to ADC. Dec 2015 3
4. While Southern Auckland (south of Portage Road, Otahuhu) is part of Auckland,
its commuting patterns, cultural patterns, and economic patterns suggest a higher
degree of semi-autonomy against greater Auckland
8/12/2015 Ben Ross. presentation to ADC. Dec 2015 4
6. Manukau City Centre as the leading non (main City Centre)
Transform project
• Remember the South is due to grow by 120,000 people and 13,000 jobs
in the Greenfield and SHA areas alone. This does not include intensification
• Bottleneck at Mt Wellington/Otahuhu for both motorway and rail lines to move
people north towards major Isthmus employment centres
• Manukau City Centre while a Metropolitan Centre serves as a “City Centre”
(heart and hub) to The South
• Transform Program similar to Wynyard Quarter and City Centre Master Plan
needed
for Manukau City Centre to be firing on all cylinders
8/12/2015 Ben Ross. presentation to ADC. Dec 2015 6
7. Minimum Expectations from the Community
Collaboration for the larger works including planning
Empowerment for
smaller projects like
parklets and activating
street frontages
It would be expected that the Council Community Empowerment system would be
executed
