3. DISCUSSION
• I. THE LORD’S SUPPER INSTITUTED- (MAT. 26:26-29).
A. THE LORD’S SUPPER WAS INSTITUTED BY JESUS CHRIST
DURING THE JEWISH PASSOVER.
JESUS MET WITH DISCIPLES TO EAT THE PASSOVER. AFTER
THE PASSOVER MEAL HE INSTITUTED THE LORD’S
SUPPER.
1. MEANING THE LORD’S SUPPER WAS DIVINE IN ORIGIN.
NOTE FEW POINTS ABOUT THE PASSOVER.
A. IT WAS FIRST OBSERVED BY THE ISRAELITES IN EGYPT
(EXODUS 12:1-13:10)
B. THE PASSOVER WAS AN ANNUAL FEAST TO COMMEMORATE
WHAT THE LORD DID FOR THE ISRAELITES IN EGYPT
(DEUTERONOMY 16:1).

4. B. THE BREAD:
1. Jesus used the unleavened bread of the Passover .
2. When Jesus took it : he said “ this is my body “ Matthew 26:26,
Mark 14:22-26, Luke 22:14-23
A. This statement or phrase should be taken or understood figuratively.
Compare with john 10:9;15:1. They are all metaphoric expressions .
C. THE CUP.
1. Jesus took the cup, gave thanks , and told the apostles to drink Mt. 26:27
a. The word cup ( Greek, poterion) is used of “ a cup , a drinking vessel.”
It is also used as the metonymy of the container for the contained, the
contents of the cup, which is offered to be drunk luke 22:20b….
(Thayer, 533).
2. Jesus explained that the cup was a fruit of the vine - Matthew 26:27-29
note carefully the pronouns “ this is my blood of the covenant… I will not
drink OF THE FRUIT OF THE VINE “

7. II. THE PURPOSE OF THE LORD’S SUPPER
A. THERE WAS ABUSE OF THE LORD’S SUPPER IN THE CHURCH
OF CORINTH.
THE CORINTHIANS WERE MAKING A COMMON MEAL OF IT.
I CORINTHIANS 11:20-22
1. PAUL SHAMED THEM FOR THEIR CONDUCT.
2. THEY HAD HOUSES IN WHICH TO EAT AND DRINK. COMMON
MEALS WERE NOT TO BE EATEN AT THE TIME OF THE LORD’S
SUPPER.
B. PAUL TAUGHT THAT THERE WERE SEVERAL PURPOSES OF
THE SUPPER.
(I CORINTHIANS 11:23-26)

8. 2. It is to provide proclamation of the Lord’s death. Verse 26
3.It is to provide predictive element – to be observed until the
Lord’s return -verse 26
4. It is to be a communion (communion, sharing, fellowship) with
other Christians – 1 Corinthians 10:16.
The Greek word Koinonia’ is used of joint participation,
partnership, sharing etc. I Corinthians 1:9,
II Corinthians 13:14, I John 1:3, 7. It is used of sharing in
giving in II Corinthians 9:13.

9. III. THE OBSERANCE OF THE LORD’S SUPPER TODAY
A. The observance of the lord’s Supper –
1. The Lord’s Supper is to be observed in the Kingdom of
God; Luke 22:18, Matthew 26:29. the Kingdom Came into
existence on the day of Pentecost – Read Acts 2.
2. As part of the worship of the Church. Acts 20:7,
I Corinthians 11:20,33
B. The time of the observance.
1. The first day of the week. Acts 20:7
2. Lord’s Supper (I Corinthians 11:20) is observed on the
Lord’s day. (Revelation 1:10)
The Greek word (Kuriakόs) which is translated ‘Lord’s’ is
used only twice in the New Testament.
It is once used of the day and once of the Supper.

10. ….The Lord’s Supper is observed on the Lord’s day.
In New Testament time, the word Kuriakȯs was used of the
imperial treasury and service - of that which belonged to Caeser
(Diessman, LAE, 357-359).
The Roman emperors claimed for themselves titles and
attributes which should have belonged ONLY to GOD.
C. The manner of partaking.
1. It is a time of self examination. I Corinthians 11:28
2. Partake in a worthy manner. I Corinthians 11:27-30.
The Corinthians, in their abuse of the Lord’s Supper, were not
partaking worthily.

11. D. WHAT WAS THE SUPPER CALLED?
A. Lord’s Supper – I Corinthians 11:20
B. Lord’s table – I Corinthians 10:21
The Greek text literally reads “table of the Lord”.
C. Communion (Sharing) I Corinthians 10:16
D. Breaking of bread. Acts 20;7, I Corinthians 10:16.
This phrase was commonly used of the Lord’s Supper. The bread
being first item involved in the Supper, stands for the entire Supper.
E. SOME TERMS NOT USED IN THE BIBLE
1. Eucharist – The phrase “given thanks” in Matthew 26:27 is from
the Greek word ‘eucharistia” . This means “thanksgiving”.
Putting this into proper perspective the cause therefore
becomes more of a “thanksgiving” more than a Memorial
making the Eucharist idea WRONG.

2. Mass – According to Roman Catholic theology, Jesus is
offered as a sacrifice in every Mass. They (Catholics) ‘The
sacrifice of the Mass is identical with that of the cross, both
having the same victim and high priest – Jesus Christ.
The only difference consist in the manner of the oblation.
Christ was offered up in an unbloody manner. ‘Read
(Gibbons, faith of our fathers, 254)”
The Bible says that Christ was offered ONLY ONCE. (Read
Hebrews 9:26-28)
The Lord’s Supper is NOT a SACRIFICE, as the Roman
Catholic says, but a MEMORIAL OF A SACRIFICE.

3. Sacrament – In the centuries following the apostolic age the
term sacrament came to imply an outward visible sign of an
inward Spiritual grace.
The term was first applied to baptism and the Lord’s Supper,
but later included confirmation, penance, ordination, extreme
unction and matrimony.
The sacraments tended to be regarded as conveying grace
with themselves.
This is NOT THE NEW TESTAMENT CONCEPT OF THE
LORD’S SUPPER.

14. CONCLUSION
1. This study should help those of us who are Christians to
appreciate the sacrifice of the savior and to partake of this
Memorial first in a worthy manner.
2. Even those who are not Christians should see in this Supper a
Memorial to what Christ died for man and be constrained to
seek the salvation He (Jesus) came to bring, by obedience to
the GOSPEL.

16. THE MUSIC IN THE EARLY CHURCH
* THEY SANG*
INTRODUCTION:
1. The early church sang praises to God in their assemblies
2. The Christians also sang to the Lord in their individual capacities.
3. There are only two types of music
(1) Vocal-NO INSTRUMENT ADDED
(1) Instrumental - This is made up of both the vocal (voice sound) and
instruments.
4. Early Christians worshipped with only vocal Songs ALONE

17. I.THE EARLY CHURCH SANG PRAISES TO GOD
A. WATCH THE ORDER OF HOW IT WAS CARRIED OUT (SINGING)
1. Ephesians 5:19, Colossians 3:16-17
(i) We make melody in the heart or in sincerity, thinking about what we are
singing.
(ii) We teach and encourage one another in singing. This means that the
songs must be scriptural. We are teaching and learning in our songs.
(iii) All Should sing since we are encouraging one another. This rules out a
small group singing to everyone else. It also leads to showmanship and
pride. Choirs or special groups are often done with a view towards
entertainment instead of being edified.
(iv) Singing is the only act in which the whole congregation participates
with harmonious voices. Since the whole congregation is to be involved
we do not have choirs or special singing groups.

18. (v) The words "one another" Ephesians 5:19, and Colossians 3:16 are
reciprocal, which emphasizes corporate unity. Everyone is to be
involved in the singing.
(vi) Singing helps us develop closer relationships with God and with others.
We must be conscious that we are communicating with God.
(vii) I Corinthians 14:40 implies a song leader. The congregation must follow
the song leading the songs.

19. PURPOSE OF SINGING
1. Singing is a way of teaching..
2. Singing is a confession of faith Heb 13:15
3. Singing is a spiritual sacrifice to God (Hebrews 13:15). The old Testament
presents thanksgiving accompanying Sacrifice (Psalm 26:6) the
equivalent of sacrifice (Jonah 2:9, Psalm 141:2), and a substitute for
sacrifice (Psalm 50:14,23)
4. Ephesians 5 connects singing with being filled with the spirit
5. Singing is for mutual edification. This makes the melody secondary to the
words, since only the words teach and edify.
6. Singing exemplifies the unity of the church Romans 15:6
7. Singing involves the whole person: Spirit, mind, heart and lips.
8. Singing expresses deep religions emotion James 5:13
