In the popular calendar, June 24th is known as Sânziene or Drăgaica.
The festival in the Sânziene’s honor is also called "Silent cuckoo". This
bird sings only three months a year. It is said that if the cuckoon ceases to
sing before Sânziene it means that the summer will be drought .
The Romanian folklore imagined Sânzienele as very beautiful girls, who
live through forests or plains, most often playing. The feast of Sânziene is
also an occasion to celebrate the sun and the agricultural work of the
summer. In many areas of the country, fires are lit on the hills at night. In
some villages people walk with the torches lit, surrounding the houses and
the fields. On the day of Sânziene there are parties, which are a very good
opportunity for young people to meet for marriage
I believe these traditions represent us across the borders. Travelers will
be surprised to discover that Romania is a place full of myths and legends
well preserved over time.

The flowers gathered on the Day of Sânziene, caught in crowns or
cross-linked, are taken to the church to be sanctified and then kept
for the treatment of diseases.
