1. About the Author: Blessings Mlowoka is working in Karonga DISCOVER project ( Self
Help Africa -SHA/ Foundation For Community Support Services-FOCUS) as Project
Officer responsible coordinating all crops and disaster risk reduction ( DRR) activities.
He has also worked with the Department of Disaster Management Affairs( DoDMA) as
an intern. In addition to that Blessings also worked with Disaster Preparedness
European Commission Humanitarian Office (DIPECHO III) project under
COOPERAZIONE INTERNAZIONALE (COOPI) in Lilongwe / Salima as Disaster Risk
Reduction Resource Centre Coordinator (Consortium with Goal Malawi, COOPI, EAM and
Christian Aid). He was also part of the development of the DISCOVER Project while with
COOPI. GOAL Malawi was another reputable International organisation Blessings
worked with. Here, he was the Livelihood Officer before rising to coordinating all DRR
activities within DISCOVER Project in Nsanje. Blessings was among the students who
closely spearheading a research on disaster (floods and drought) mitigation strategies
from the Heriot-Watt University School of the Built Environment Riccarton, Edinburgh.
Currently working in DISCOVER project in Karonga as Disaster Risk Reduction and
Crops Projects Officer and pursuing post graduate in Disaster Risk Management. He
also received a noble prize with Suemier College of Project management after
conducting a good research on Disasters and Children in lower shire districts. Mr.
Mlowoka has also been closely working with Dr. Faides Mwale, lecture of Polytechnic on
Flood Risk Management in the districts of Chikwawa and Nsanje.
Currently doing a research on “The role of national and national policy instruments in
managing disasters in Malawi; a case of lower shire in Malawi.
