Beacon Boom: Opportunities in Healthcare
(notes from the presentation)
1). Mobile is booming. That’s why you’re here. There’s another wave is coming that will enhance that mobile boom.
2). That enhancement… BEACONS.
3). As an integral part of the Internet of Things, we’re expecting 30 billion devices entering the ecosystem in the next 5 years.

But before we go too far… Since there's only a limited amount of room for text on slideshare, we're going to skip those slides and go right to...
Use cases
20). Indoor Navigation. Think of beacons as the answer to GPS for interior environments…beacons can guide the patient/family to whatever room/department they’re looking for from wherever they’re starting….it’s one thing to find radiology when you’re walking in the main entrance but another thing entirely when you’re trying to navigate a campus when you’re coming from the trauma unit or 8th floor med/surg– AND you don’t have to speak English, or as we saw in the San Francisco airport example – even be able to see the signs.
Patient and family stress starts from the moment they pull onto a healthcare campus and try to figure out where to park and how to get to where they’re going – Beacons are a solution.
21). Patient Experience is all the rage, right? But how are we measuring, in real time? With a beacon application, we can survey how are we doing with Simple 5 star, “how was your experience” pop up pushed through the app. We’ll get real time analytics. Learn which days/shifts are performing well, which might need a little guidance – even things like how was the food in the cafeteria!
22). On the administrative side we have already seen that automated Asset Tracking increases Return on Investment by streamlining the process. Beacons can increase that ROI by enhancing current systems with less expensive hardware costs.
23). That streamlining continues in being able to map foot-traffic to see how a facility’s spaces, along with its shared mobile equipment is being utilized, and what needs service. Like traffic counters on the highway, this gives administrators far more logistical information.
24). Identity verification… Are they who they say they are?… and… are they where they are supposed to be? Patients and families can ensure they are speaking with the appropriate hospital staff, and the staff can also receive faster contextual verification of a patient’s identity and condition as they approach them.
25). Security is another area where beacons can help. By specifying areas of access for vendors and other visitors, security teams can be notified if someone wanders into restricted areas. Coupled with indoor navigation tools, an app can even help them get back on the right path.

5. Beacons
[ Transmitters ]
Beacons don't track
anything. They just send
out little signals that your
phone can understand.
Think of them as tiny
lighthouses.
Gateways
[ Receivers ]
Most often mobile devices,
gateways “listen” for
specific beacon signals,
then interpret and react
based on software
instructions.
