My primary

gravitated
towards the
subject of war.
It showed the
side and effects
of the citizens

3. War Poems
The poems I looked
into gave my
work more
substance and
meaning being
why each
element was
involved. I
illustrated the
poem that was
my
interpretation
instead of
analysis. The
main points that
stood out of
these were:
o Gas mask
o Gas
o Helplessness
o “wagon” for
the dead
bodies
o Trench
representing
growing life
o Senses
o Hot and cold
4. Influential Sources
o Fluid lines
o Senses
o Trench
o Hot & cold
o Initial gas mask
o Original poem to refer
to
o Man in the mask
o Otto Dix
o Dark colours
o Primary colours
o Colour fading
o Acrylic
o Eyes
o Observational reference
o Real tones and shapes
to look at
5. Observational Drawings
From the original gas mask I did one drawing. I did this in watercolours with
mark making of biro over the top. This followed on from the other drawings
in my book. I like the subtle tones of the watercolours although I wanted the
tones to be done with the colour rather than the pen.
So, I was inspired by my Otto Dix artist inspired study. This led me to
experiment with acrylic. I then got away from putting a black line round the
shapes.
This became more expressive and although the pieces themselves aren’t
6. Observational Drawings DEVELOPMENT

could go lighter
and also darker

it better with the
