WELCOME FROM YOUR CHAIRMAN
AND PRESIDENT

Welcome to Fall Leadership Days in the City by the Bay.
The constantly-changing political and economic
environment that impacts everyone in our industry
demands nimble and aggressive action from your
association and greater involvement from you and all
members. Leadership Days is that opportune time
and place for members to be more informed about
the issues facing the industry and the association’s
initiatives to address them and to get actively involved.
Leadership Days also is that very important time and
place where professional staff and key volunteer
leaders join forces – engage with each other – to share
ideas, strategies, tactics and solutions. This face-to-
face interaction is extremely productive and mutually
beneficial.
What is becoming abundantly clear from the results
of previous committee, community segment and
board meetings is that your association is becoming a
data-driven association. Research, data and analysis
drive decisions on strategy, processes, systems and
programs. Collaboration and active participation by
members is more important than ever before to ensure
the association is focused on providing data sharing
opportunities and delivering value to the membership
and the auto care industry.
So, get ready to roll up your sleeves, put on your
association hat and engage. And, as always, speak up,
speak out, contribute and don’t forget to take some time
to enjoy San Francisco.
Thanks, Michael and Bill
AGENDA
Editor's Notes
------------------
At the Auto Care Association we recognized that our members need to exchange huge amounts of information in the course of doing business. Parts manufacturers and their distribution partners need to exchange millions of pages of catalog content, product images, packaging sizes and box dimensions, warranty, country of origin … and so much more
All together we call this information “Product Content”. And doing business electronically today requires vast libraries of content from hundreds of sources. Without one agreed-upon automotive language this task would be impossible. Without a standard way of referring to a vehicle and the spare parts, business could not be done with computers. Unlike you and I, computers have no imagination – they can’t figure out what the words mean. It’s either right or it’s wrong. And in business, “wrong” costs money.
------------------
In the Auto Care industry we are fortunate to have two very mature and respected standards for the exchange of catalog information and for product information exchange – they are called ACES and PIES.
There are thousands of unique vehicles here in South America. Different combinations of Vehicle Make, Vehicle Model name, the Dates of production or Model Year … and all the Engine and drive train variations. Today, it is common to reach for a paper catalog that lists the replacement parts from a single supplier for all those cars and trucks.
------------------
Now imagine putting all of that information in a computer system.
Without rules for how you refer to the vehicle and engine information the catalog would be gibberish – it would make no sense.
ACES defines the rules that hundreds of suppliers in North America are using today to do three things:
Describe the vehicle configuration with valid database values
Describe the product terminology with a database of product nomenclature (names)
And ACES defines a computer-readable format for the exchange of this information from supplier to receiver
ACES makes compiling an electronic catalog with content about thousands of product lines possible and efficient. The standard ensures the quality and consistency of the catalog data, it contributes to added sales because all of the related product data is together and it helps reduce returns of good parts because the correct part gets sold the first time.
Good standards-based product data helps customers order the right product the first time in the correct quantity. This increases sales and reduce the return non-warranty product. Rich product attribute data helps the repair shop and customer understand the difference between different products for the same vehicle. Suppliers who provide the detailed performance and physical attributes of their product enjoy an advantage over their competition – and can differentiate their products on features and value … not price alone
The ACES and PIES standards from the Auto Care Association are almost universally adopted by suppliers and their distribution partners in North America.
