1. Imagine, watching a horror movie when the
protagonists trips and gets snagged by a
root that dug itself out of the ground while
the killer slowly creeps up on her. Just
before he reaches her there is a loud
BANG that fades to black. By itself, this
image would strike fear into its audience,
but the addition of sound greatly enhances
this fear. The sound builds anticipation and
paranoia until finally it finishes with the
BANG. But, what about these sounds can
trigger such responses from us?

Resources
Music has the power to effect the visual
field and the imagination by enhancing the
emotional impact of scenes. Sound can be
used to heighten suspense or terror and
tap into the instinctive fears in the listener.
Fast, loud attack sounds are more
frightening than slow, soft attack sounds.
However, Slow attack sounds build more
tension, just like deep bass sounds that
progressively become faster, like in Jaws.
Sounds in horror films are designed to
disturb the audience rather than interest
them.
