Both systems search through data to look for patterns. Machine learning algorithms are often categorized as being supervised or unsupervised. Supervised algorithms can apply what has been learned in the past to new data. Unsupervised algorithms can draw inferences from datasets.
Supervised Learning is the machine learning task of inferring a function from labelled training data. The training data consists of a set of training examples. In supervised learning, each example is a pair consisting of an input object (typically a vector) and a desired output value (also called the supervisory signal).Some popular examples of supervised machine learning algorithms are:

Unsupervised Learning is where you only have input data (X) and no corresponding output variables. The goal for unsupervised learning is to model the underlying structure or distribution in the data in order to learn more about the data. Algorithms are left to their own devices to discover and present the interesting structure in the data. Unsupervised learning problems can be further grouped into clustering and association problems.
