The rallying cry for more than a dozen local artists Sunday was apparently: All
you need is love — for The Beatles.
Scores of Beatle fans showed up at the Hyatt Regency Valencia hotel Sunday
night for an event called, Beatles Gold 2, where they were able to share some
of their fond Fab Four memories with members of the Santa Clarita Artists
Association.
Beatles Gold 2 — the encore event — was a special musical tribute to the
Beatles’ 50th year in America with a live concert, dinner and dancing.
2. The first Beatles Gold art exhibit — which included dinner and dancing to the
Sgt. Peppers Beatles Tribute band — was such a hit last year, organizer
Zonie Gordon had to bring it back for encore.
On display was an art exhibit of Beatles-inspired pieces from the artists of the
Santa Clarita Artists Association.
“You have to remember that for many of us — once we retire, we get to
pursue our passion,” said association president Patricia Thayer, one of the
artists displaying Beatle-inspired art.
For saxophonist Scott Mitchel and guitarist Manak Khamvongsa, playing
Beatle music, as the art lovers and Beatle fans strolling through the art on
display, was a labor of love.
“They were the best,” Mitchell said about the Beatles. “I grew up with them. I
saw them on Ed Sullivan.”
The pair played “And I Love Her” and “Let It Be” as fans checked out Beatles
renderings.
“It’s a celebration,” Gordon said. “It’s a tribute to the 50th year The Beatles
were in America.
“We’re displaying original art,” she said. “And, I have many.”
Fatima Purdy, standing beside one of Gordon’s original paintings entitled
“Blackbird Fly,” called the event, simply: “Fun.”
