During the final days of the Nazi Reich, how did the prisoners of
concentration camps take revenge on the SS guards?
4. Most revenge was done by testifying against the guards.
Look at this picture:
This is a picture of a Soviet prisoner of Buchenwald who pointed out
the guard who beat and executed prisoners. This photo was taken in
5. April 1945, when the US Army liberated this camp. Some guards were
still present at this camp during its liberation.
The guard expected to just maybe walk away, but the prisoner who
was scared of confronting him sooner, finally sought revenge and
pointed him out to American forces. The guard was arrested and
prisoners testified against him in court.
In April 1945, American forces liberated Dachau
concentration camp:
6. 2 prisoners stand over an SS guard they beat up when the camp was
liberated. There is a story where the army turned away while 2
prisoners beat an SS guard to death with a shovel. This might be this
photo, as one of the prisoners has a shovel.
Look at all the bodies lined up against the wall in the background. We
don’t know if the army shot them, or the prisoners got their revenge.
During Dachau’s liberation, this photo was taken:
7. It’s a photo of prisoners beating 2 SS guards nearly to death.
Interestingly, a Jewish US Army officer brought these 2 SS guards who
were hiding to the prisoners. Clearly, the US Army also wanted
revenge against these guards. When the officer brought these 2, he
told the prisoners that they were SS guards.
“We went outside and stopped them (from killing the two) and put the
beaten Nazis on a jeep that took them outside the camp. They were so
scared they jumped out of the jeep and tried to run but a guard killed
them both. When the prisoners heard the shots, they cheered and
8. begged us to bring them more men. They no longer wanted food, a
shower or a bed — only more SS men.” -Alvin Weinstein, US Army
officer who liberated Dachau
The officer also said “Suddenly these men’s strength returned to them
and they beat those Hitlerites [SS guards] until they nearly died,” he
wrote.
This is Amon Goeth:
9. He was the commanding officer of Płaszow labor camp. He was so
brutal to his prisoners that the SS even tried him and arrested him in
1944. Since Germany was losing the war, he was no longer a priority
and was let go.
He ALMOST escaped.
He put on a Wehrmacht uniform and tried to escape Europe. The US
Army caught him in 1945. He denied being an SS officer. He was not
facing any serious charges, and was going to be released. HOWEVER;
he was identified by former prisoners of Płaszow. He was then handed
over to the Polish government to stand trial. He was executed in 1946.
Justice is best served as revenge, especially by those who suffered
under him.
Keep in mind, many SS guards tried escaping the justice system by
either having false names, wearing Wehrmacht uniforms, etc. But
were identified by survivors, and faced justice.
