1 INT. LUCIEN VOGEL´S OFFICE. MORNING
ROSE HELLMAN (23) is sitting in a table, located in a tiny
office. The table is full of watercolours and Rose is drawing
a dress she has in front. In the paper we can read Gazette du
Bon Ton. Rosa stands up and delivers the drawing to his boss,
LUCIEN VOGEL (57).
ROSE HELLMAN:
This is the drawing you asked for Mr.
Vogel.
LUCIEN VOGEL:
(Looking at his papers) Thank you,
Rose, here is the money. I will tell
you when I need your services again.
Now you can leave.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Goodbye.
Rose leaves the office.
2 EXT. OUTSIDE THE OFFICE. MORNING
Rose picks up her things and goes out of the building. There
is a car waiting for her, Rose doesn´t like that, and we can
see how her expression changes while she arrives to the car.
ROSE HELLMAN:
(Talking to the driver) Thank you for
coming for me, but I will go walking
home.
CAR DRIVER:
Miss Hellman, you have to come with
me, is not nice to see a woman walking
alone on the streets of Paris.
ROSE HELLMAN:
I don´t care. I´ve spent the whole day
at the office drawing, I would like to
take some fresh air.
CAR DRIVER:
This are your fathers orders, you have
to come with me. It was one of the
conditions he established if you
wanted to work. You must come and
leave with me.

ROSE HELLMAN:
I remember the rules perfectly, but
can´t you leave it for once?
CAR DRIVER:
I´m afraid I can´t. Now, please, get
into the car, I don´t want to keep
arguing.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Ok.
Rose finally gets into the car.
3 INT. AMERICAN EMBASSY. MORNING
Rose arrives to the embassy. The servants take of her coat
and take her things to her room. Rose goes to the living room
where her parents are waiting her for lunch.
Rose enters and sits next to her mother ELIZABETH HELLMAN
(50) and in front of her father, the ambassador, WILLIAM
HELLMAN (53)
ELIZABETH HELLMAN:
Good afternoon, Rose. We were waiting
for you.
Elizabeth gets up from the sofa and sits down at the table.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Good afternoon mother. (Sits down at
the table)
ELIZABETH HELLMAN:
How was work?
ROSE HELLMAN:
Good, as usual, nothing new to tell.
Take a dress and draw it, the same
that I´ve been doing for the past few
months.
ELIZABETH HELLMAN:
Well that´s nice, you can take your
mind off for a few hours a day.
ROSE HELLMAN:
And you, dad? Is there anything new to
tell?

WILLIAM HELLMAN:
(Without looking at Rose) No, nothing
new.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Really? I don´t believe that, with
everything that is going on with the
Austro-Hungarian empire, you must know
something.
WILLIAM HELLMAN:
No Rose, I don´t. (Now he looks at
Rose) And if I knew anything, why
would I have to tell you about it?
ROSE HELLMAN:
Well I don´t know, because I´m
interested on it.
WILLIAM HELLMAN:
Come on, not this discussion again.
Women think that taking care of
politics is as easy as taking care of
the kitchen.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Yes, as if that was the only thing we
are worth for. Taking care of the
house.
WILLIAM HELLMAN:
Certainly you are not worth it for
politics, you are lucky that I let you
work.
ROSE HELLMAN:
So thoughtful of you, father, thank

ELIZABETH HELLMAN:
Please, can we, for once, just have
lunch calmly.
Rose and William stop arguing and all of them start eating.
4 EXT. EMBASSY´S GARDEN. MORNING.
At the end of lunch the three of them are at the garden.
Suddenly one of the servants (65) approaches Rose.

SERVANT:
Miss Hellman, Lucien Vogel is calling
you.
Rose stands up, walks into the house, and she takes the phone
that is close to the garden´s door.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Mister Vogel?
LUCIEN VOGEL:
Hi Rose. I´ve got a new assignment for
you and I need you once again.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Ok.
LUCIEN VOGEL:
Perfect. Come in a few days to the
office. Thank you and good afternoon.
(He hangs up the phone).
Rose goes back to the garden, and she sits next to her
parents.
ELIZABETH HELLMAN:
Who was that?
ROSE HELLMAN:
Mr. Vogel, he asked me to do another
assignment.
Elizabeth smiles forcibly.
WILLIAM HELLMAN:
I don´t understand why do you love to
work that much. You have all you need.
ROSE HELLMAN:
You know I prefer to be an independent
person, and not be always protected by
you guys. I know is hard to understand
for you.
WILLIAM HELLMAN:
Well, your future husband is not going
to be this tolerant. You will have to
work to make him happy.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Maybe I don´t want to get married,

have you thought that a woman can be
happy without having a man by her
side?
WILLIAM HELLMAN:
Every woman says that, but at the end
all of you want to get married.
ROSE HELLMAN:
I don´t think that father, but how can
a person as archaic as you understand
this?
William tries to say something, but Rose stands up before he
can start talking. She goes by her father´s side and looks
him in the eyes.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Now, if you can excuse me, I´m going
to my room to prepare my next
assignment.
Rose leaves the living room and William contains himself not
to shout at his daughter.
5 INT. EMBASSY´S LIVING ROOM. NIGHT.
Rose is at the embassy´s living room reading the politics
section of different newspapers. Someone approaches her, is
her old friend GUS DEWAR (26).
GUS DEWAR:
(Touching her shoulder) Hello.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Hi Gus!
She stands up and hugs him. They both stand.
ROSE HELLMAN:
What are you doing here? I thought you
were in Washington.
GUS DEWAR:
The meetings with the president are
finished now, so I´ve got a few days
off.
ROSE HELLMAN:
So are you staying in Paris for a
while?

GUS DEWAR:
Yes, but why don´t we go out to
dinner? To catch up.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Yes! I would love that, let´s go then.
They are leaving the living room and William enters. He seems
happy to see Gus, but not so happy to see her daughter.
WILLIAM HELLMAN:
Good night Gus.
GUS DEWAR:
Hello Mr. Hellman. How are you?
WILLIAM HELLMAN:
Good, very good. How is the president?
GUS DEWAR:
Good, but he hasn´t stopped for the
past few months, with meetings here,
meetings there...
WILLIAM HELLMAN:
Tell me about it, I haven´t stopped
for the past few months either. Why
don´t you come to have lunch some day?
So we can talk about all of this.
William looks at Rose defiantly. Rose looks back at him, but
she doesn´t make a gesture.
GUS DEWAR:
It would be a pleasure Mr. Hellman.
WILLIAM HELLMAN:
I would like that, and where are you
going?
GUS DEWAR:
I´m taking your daughter to dinner.
ROSE HELLMAN:
You are taking me? I know how to walk,
Gus.
GUS DEWAR:
Sorry.

WILLIAM HELLMAN:
She likes to fight against men, don´t
take it seriously. She likes to
question her role has a woman, is one
of those women. Now you can go.
Rose prefers not to reply to her father. She and Gus leave
the house.
6 EXT. CAFE PROCOPE. NIGHT.
Gus and Rose sit on the terrace of the Cafe Procope.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Well, how are the things in Europe?
GUS DEWAR:
There is a certain fear all over the
continent. The countries are getting
ready for a war. The call it the armed
peace.
ROSE HELLMAN:
I´ve hear of that. All of them sign
peace agreements, but at the same time
they are getting ready for a war.
GUS DEWAR:
That´s it, and being a conflict of
European states, all we can do as
Americans is watch.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Obviously. The United States have the
tendency to get their noses where they
don´t have to. You must leave these
countries to handle their problems
alone.
GUS DEWAR:
Maybe you are right.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Of course I´m, think about it. If
United States takes part, in case of
war, it might become a global scale
problem. That would be a huge risk to
the whole world.
GUS DEWAR:
I didn´t thought of it like that, it

makes sense.
ROSE HELLMAN:
That should be avoided at all costs.
It would damage a lot the world´s
economy.
GUS DEWAR:
No doubt, I see you have clear ideas
about this topic.
ROSE HELLMAN:
You know is something I´m interested
in, and I like to talk about it.
(Drinks)
GUS DEWAR:
Being in the embassy since you were
little must have taught you a lot.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Make no mistake, being in the embassy
has let me see a lot, but teach, no. I
learnt everything by myself.
Gus and Rose stay in the terrace talking for a while.
7 EXT. A STREET NEARBY SEINE RIVER. NIGHT.
A waiter approaches Gus and Rose´s table.
WAITER:
We are about to close. You must leave.
GUS DEWAR:
Ok. (Stands up) Do you want to go
walking to the embassy?
ROSE HELLMAN:
(Stands up) Yes, is a nice idea.
They walk nearby the Seine´s edge.
GUS DEWAR:
And, what about you Rose?
ROSE HELLMAN:
There´s not much to talk about.
GUS DEWAR:
How are things at home?

ROSE HELLMAN:
Like always, my dad doesn´t approve my
work life, or my life at all, so we
argue a lot.
GUS DEWAR:
But you are still working, right?
ROSE HELLMAN:
Yes, of course, and I expect to do it
for a long time. But I don´t know if I
see drawing dresses as a long time
work.
GUS DEWAR:
And what do you really want to do?
ROSE HELLMAN:
You know how interested I´m in
politics, and I´ve always loved
writing, so mixing the two of them
would be a dream job.
GUS DEWAR:
So, what do you want to do?
ROSE HELLMAN:
I don´t know exactly, but I would love
to write in a newspaper about
politics.
GUS DEWAR:
A friend of mine told me that in Le
Figaro are looking for someone to
write in the politics and economy
section, why don´t you try it?
ROSE HELLMAN:
I don´t know, I could try it. But even
though I know a lot about politics I
don´t know if enough to write about
it.
GUS DEWAR:
You know more than enough to write
about it, besides, you have
interesting opinions that are needed
for the section. And when it comes to
your way of writing don´t worry about
it, I´m sure that you will learn
there.

ROSE HELLMAN:
Ok then, I will write them a letter
asking them for the job.
Gus and Rose continue walking on the edge of the Seine.
8 EXT. OUTSIDE THE EMBASSY. NIGHT.
Gus and Rose arrive to the embassy.
GUS DEWAR:
I hope that your application for the
job goes well.
Rose climbs a step.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Thank you. I hope to see you soon.
GUS DEWAR:
With my job you never know, but don´t
worry, I will come to visit you
whenever I can.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Nice, (hugs him) take care Gus.
GUS DEWAR:
You too.
While Rose climbs the steps, Gus stares at her.
9 INT. WILLIAM HELLMAN´S OFFICE. NIGHT.
That same night Rose enters her father's office on the sly.
She sits at his table and begins to write the letter
requesting an interview with the editor of Le Figaro. When
she finishes, she signs as Rose Hellman. Rosa knows she won't
be able to send a letter without her parents wanting to know
who is for, so she puts them in the pile of letters that her
father has to send.
10 INT. EMBASSY´S LIVING ROOM. NIGHT.
When she leaves the office she checks out that nobody is
watching, her father doesn´t like when someone enters his
office, and specially if is a woman. When Rose starts
climbing up the stairs, her mother shows up.
ELIZABETH HELLMAN:
Rose, where have you been? Is late.

ROSE HELLMAN:
Sorry mother, I´ve been with Gus at
the Procope. I´m going to sleep now.
ELIZABETH HELLMAN:
No need to rush, let´s go to the
living room.
Elizabeth and Rose go to the living room.
ELIZABETH HELLMAN:
What is going on with you and Gus?
ROSE HELLMAN:
(She seems nervous) What do you mean?
ELIZABETH HELLMAN:
I don´t know, you go to the Procope,
alone, and you come home at this
hour...
ROSE HELLMAN:
Oh! (she is relaxed now) Nothing like
that mom. Gus and I are just friends,
good ones and since we don´t she each
other that much, we like to catch up
when we can.
ELIZABETH HELLMAN:
Is so sad that you guys are not more
than friends.
ROSE HELLMAN:
What do you mean?
ELIZABETH HELLMAN:
You are 23 years old Rose, and you´ve
never had a boyfriend. Most girls at
your age are married, and some of them
have children.
ROSE HELLMAN:
And some work, and some fight for
women´s rights. I prefer that life and
being independent, you know that,
we´ve talk about this. I don´t know
why we keep arguing about this.
ELIZABETH HELLMAN:
I don´t want you to end up alone.

And what is the problem with that?
ELIZABETH HELLMAN:
Nothing, I just want you to have
someone who loves you, and takes care
of you.
ROSE HELLMAN:
I can take care of myself, I´m a grown
woman, and there´s people who love me.
Don´t worry about it mother.
ELIZABETH HELLMAN:
I´m sorry, but my duty as a mom is to
worry about you.
ROSE HELLMAN:
When it comes to men, you don´t need
to worry. (Stands up) I don´t need a
man to be happy.
Rose kisses her mother and leaves.
11 INT. EMBASSY´S RECEPTION. MORNING.
MOUNTING SECUENCE.
Rose spends weeks looking at the mailbox, waiting the answer
from Le Figaro. Every morning she picks up the mail, she goes
before her father, in case a letter is named to Rose her dad
will want to read it first.
12 INT. ROSE´S ROOM. MORNING.
A week after sending the letter to Le Figaro Rose gets a
letter from the newspaper, she picks the letter, hides it
into her dress so her parents won´t see her. She climbs up
the stair and gets into her room. She opens the letter.
Rose seems upset about the answer, they have rejected her. In
the letter they say that she is not what they are looking for
and that makes Rose suspicious. Rose needs to know what is
happening, so she decides to go to Le Figaro´s office.
13 INT. EMBASSY´S RECEPTION. MORNING.
Rose goes down the stairs, takes her coat and when she is
about to leave the driver stops her.

DRIVER:
Where are you going Ms. Hellman?
ROSE HELLMAN:
I must go (she´s thinking) to the
Figaro´s office, the new assignment to
La Gazzete du Bon Ton is there.
DRIVER:
You know the rules, you can´t go
anywhere... (he is interrupted)
ROSE HELLMAN:
(Interrupting the driver)...alone. I
know, but come on I´m in a hurry.
The driver opens the car door and Rose´s enters.
14 INT. LE FIGARO´S OFFICE. MORNING.
Rose leaves the car and goes into the office. All the people
there are men, the come and go running, without looking
anywhere. All Rosa hears is the sound of the keys, and people
talking. Rose stays, for a while, just staring.
When she recovers she approaches a woman´s table.
ROSE HELLMAN:
I´m sorry, I´m looking for Gaston
Calmette´s office.
SECRETARY:
Is at the end of the hall (she points
at the direction)
ROSE HELLMAN:
Thank you.
Rose goes to the end of the hall and knocks on the door.
15 INT. GASTON CALMETTE´S OFFICE. MORNING.
Rose knocks on GASTON CALMETTE´S (55) door.
GASTON CALMETTE:
Come on in.
Rose opens the door and goes in.
GASTON CALMETTE:
Please, sit down.

Rose moves forward and sits in the chair in front of Gaston.
GASTON CALMETTE:
Good, the first thing you need to know
about the secretary´s job that you
asked for, is to know everything I
need, and when I need it... (gets
interrupted)
ROSE HELLMAN:
(Interrupting Gaston) I´m sorry Mr
Calmette, but I´m not here for the
secretary job.
GASTON CALMETTE:
(Seems surprised) Then what are you
here for?
Rose takes out the letter and puts it on the table. Gaston
takes the letter, reads it and then he starts laughing.
ROSE HELLMAN:
I don´t get what makes you laugh that
much.
GASTON CALMETTE:
What I don´t get is what part of a
rejection letter you don´t understand.
ROSE HELLMAN:
I would like to know what is the
reason why you rejected me.
GASTON CALMETTE:
Look, to start somewhere, you don´t
have any experience and I don´t think
you know a lot of the section you sign
up for, I mean politics is not
fashion.
ROSE HELLMAN:
I can understand why would you say
that I don´t have any experience, but
I learn fast. But I don´t get why you
would assume that I don´t know
anything about politics.
GASTON CALMETTE:
Look, don´t take this the wrong way
Ms...

Hellman.
GASTON CALMETTE:
Ms. Hellman. But women don´t know
about politics, they don´t understand
it. I mean, if you had presented for
the women´s section I would have said
yes, but politics... Is too
complicated for a woman.
ROSE HELLMAN:
You can´t assume what a person knows
or doesn´t by their gender, it´s
called discrimination, did you know
that? I want you to make a test, to
see if I know enough.
GASTON CALMETTE:
I´m sorry Ms. Hellman, but I don´t do
tests. Here you know or you don´t
know, just like that.
ROSE HELLMAN:
But you can´t know how much... (gets
interrupted)
GASTON CALMETTE:
(Interrupting Rose) I told you, I
don´t do tests, now, please, get out
of my office I have work to do. Thank
you and goodbye.
Rose stands up and leaves.
16 INT. LE FIGARO´S OFFICE. MORNING.
Rose leaves the office so angry, but suddenly she decides
that she is not going to leave until Gaston makes her the
test. So, she goes up again and waits.
17 INT. LE FIGARO´S OFFICE. AFTERNOON.
At the end of the day Gaston goes out of the office, and he
sees that Rose is waiting for him.
GASTON CALMETTE:
You are a persistent woman, miss
Hellman.

ROSE HELLMAN:
I am, specially when they don´t give a
logic reason to give up. Would you do
me the test?
GASTON CALMETTE:
No, I told you.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Ok, see you tomorrow then.
Rose begins to walk.
GASTON CALMETTE:
Wait, what do you mean by see you
tomorrow?
ROSE HELLMAN:
(She tunrs around and stops walking)
Did you give a logic reason to leave?
GASTON CALMETTE:
Yes, you can´t write for the politics
section being a woman.
ROSE HELLMAN:
I said logical, Mr. Calmette, that´s
not logic.
Gaston wants to tell something to Rose, but she starts
talking.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Since you don´t give me a good reason
and you don´t want to do me the test,
I will be back tomorrow. Good bye.
Rose leaves, Gaston doesn´t move.
18 INT. LE FIGARO´S OFFICE. MORNING.
Rose goes to the Le Figaro´s office the next day. She jumps
into the car and goes back to the office. Rose sits outside
Gaston´s office and waits.
19 INT. LE FIGARO´S OFFICE. MORNING.
After a couple of hours Gaston goes out of his office to have
lunch, and he sees Rose waiting while she reads the
newspaper.

GASTON CALMETTE:
You again, you are woman of word.
ROSE HELLMAN:
That´s right.
GASTON CALMETTE:
You won´t leave until I do you the
test, won´t you?
ROSE HELLMAN:
I see that you understand me now.
GASTON CALMETTE:
(Panting) Ok, when I come back after
lunch we will do the test.
ROSE HELLMAN:
I´ll be here.
Gaston leaves.
20 INT. GASTON´S OFFICE. MORNING.
Gaston goes back to his office hoping that Rose won´t be
there, but she didn´t move. Gaston reaches Rose.
GASTON CALMETTE:
Please, come in Miss Hellman.
Gaston goes in and leaves the door open, Rose goes after him.
Rose enters and sits in front of Gaston.
GASTON CALMETTE:
Good, let´s see how much you know
about politics. I´m sure you´ve heard
about the visit that King George v is
going to make to Berlin.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Yes, I´ve heard something.
GASTON CALMETTE:
I want you to write about that, the
importance of the visit, knowing the
situation in Europe right now.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Ok, how much time do I have?

GASTON CALMETTE:
You have an hour from now on.
Rose begins to write, and Gaston´s watches while she writes,
walking around the office. When the hour is about to end
Gaston can´t stop looking at the clock.
GASTON CALMETTE:
Time is over.
Rose stops writing, takes the paper from the writing machine
and gives it to Gaston.
GASTON CALMETTE:
Please leave the office, I will tell
you when I´m done reading.
Rose leaves and closes the door.
21 INT. GASTON CALMETTE´S OFFICE. MORNING.
Gaston calls Rose into his office.
GASTON CALMETTE:
Please come in.
Rose enters and she sits in the same chair.
GASTON CALMETTE:
I must say I didn´t expect to see
this, I´m quite surprised.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Thank you, I guess.
GASTON CALMETTE:
But this is not the perfect article,
you need to clean your writing style.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Of course, I´ve never write before Mr
Calmette, I´m not a journalist, I´ve
never been. But please if you hire me,
I will be a full time journalist, and
with hard work and learning I will
improve my style.
GASTON CALMETTE:
Yes, but I don´t have time to teach
you Ms Hellman.

I´ve been outside your office for two
days and I haven´t seen anyone asking
for this job, which means that you
don´t have any candidates. It seems
that you will have to hire me.
Gaston seems hurt by that, he knows that Rose is right. He is
quite for a few seconds.
GASTON CALMETTE:
Ok miss Hellman, you are hired.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Thank you very much, I promise I will
do the best I can.
GASTON CALMETTE:
I hope so, but I must warn you, the
society won´t see nicely that a woman
works, and specially if she does the
work of a man.
ROSE HELLMAN:
I know, but I want to change their
minds, and prove them they are wrong
and that women can do the work like
they do.
GASTON CALMETTE:
Yes, yes that is really nice. But you
have to understand that the image of
Le Figaro will be harmed by that. So I
will make you and offer.
ROSE HELLMAN:
I´m listening.
GASTON CALMETTE:
If you work here, you will have to
work under a man´s name.
ROSE HELLMAN:
But no one will know who is writing
those articles.
GASTON CALMETTE:
I´m aware of that, but this will be my
only offer.

ROSE HELLMAN:

Gaston stands up and Rose does the same. They stretch hands
and Rose prepares to leave.
GASTON CALMETTE:
Miss Hellman...
Rose turns around to look at him.
GASTON CALMETTE:
From now on you will be known as Emile
Dumont. Remember that.
Rose agrees and leaves the office somewhat sad.
22 INT. EMBASSY´S LIVING ROOM. MORNING.
The next morning Rose goes down to have breakfast. She sits
and his dad leaves the room without talking to Rose. When she
is having breakfast one of the servants gives her a little
paper.
SERVANT:
Miss Hellman, this telegram is for
you, it came in this morning.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Thank you.
Rose catches the paper and begins to read it. Lucien is
asking her to go to the office of Gazette du Bon Ton to do a
drawing. Rose leaves and gets into the car.

Rose goes out of the car, and she stops before going up the
stairs. She looks at the door knowing that, that will be her
last assignment, she takes a deep breath and goes in.
24 INT. GAZETTE DU BON TON OFFICE. MORNING.
Rose is seated drawing a dress. After a while she stands up
and goes to Lucien´s office.
ROSE HELLMAN:
(Knocking the door)
LUCIEN VOGEL:
Come in.
ROSE HELLMAN:
(Opens the door) Good morning Mr
Vogel.
LUCIEN VOGEL:
Hi Rose.
ROSE HELLMAN:
This is what you asked for.
LUCIEN VOGEL:
Oh, ok, thank you.
Lucien stands up and takes an envelope. He gives it to Rose
and he sits again.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Mr. Vogel, may I speak to you?
LUCIEN VOGEL:
Of course, please sit down (he points
at the chair that is in front of him)
ROSE HELLMAN:
(Sits down) I have found a good job as

reading. Is a servant that brings her a new telegram.

ROSE HELLMAN:
Yes, (Standing up from the chair),

SERVANT:
A new telegram for you.
ROSE HELLMAN:

The servant leaves. Rose stays up reading the telegram she
just received, is from Gaston telling her the schedule and
that the next day she begins her work at Le Figaro. Suddenly
Elizabeth knocks on the door.

(Knocking at the door) We are going to

Elizabeth enters.
ROSE HELLMAN:

Rose leaves the room and her mum leaves after her. Elizabeth
stares at the book that her daughter has left in the table.
26 INT. EMBASSY´S RECEPTION. MORNING.
The next morning Rose leaves her room on the sly. The embassy
is quiet, the only noise is coming from the kitchen, they are
preparing the breakfast. Rose knows that if the driver sees
her he is going to tell his father, and he will be
suspicious. So she leaves from the service door as fast as
she can.
27 EXT. STREETS OF PARIS. MORNING.
After leaving the embassy Rose walks down the streets of
Paris. Rose is not used to walk alone in Paris, which makes
her look everywhere. Paris has just woke up, is a cold
morning but everything is quiet.
Rose approaches Palais Garnier, she turns left on the
Boulevard, and she gets into Le Figaro´s office, she enters
excited.

Rose climbs up the stairs of the office. Gaston sees her.
GASTON CALMETTE:

ROSE HELLMAN:

He says that is too pacifist and that
I took advantage of my position to
tell politicians how to their work.

ROSE HELLMAN:
That is what I told him, but he
doesn´t understand.

He certainly is. I just hope he gives
me more freedom once I begin writing

everything I write, I hope he will
trust my ideas and give me chance to
give my opinion, even if is not like
his.
GUS DEWAR:

Rose stands up and leaves. Gus stays seated drinking a beer.

Rose is at Gus´s house reading a book, Gaston gave her the
day free. Rose seems disturbed, she looks everywhere, she
can´t stay still, she moves and changes positions. The
discussion with Gus comes through her mind every time, so she
decides to go out for a walk.
When she is about to go out Gus appears.

Rose doesn´t seem happy about the idea, but she wants to be
on good terms with her friend, so she doesn´t say anything.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Let´s go then.
Rose and Gus leave home.
48 EXT. A STREET NEARBY SEINE RIVER. DAY.
Rose and Gus walk along the Seine, both are quiet and they
don´t look at each other.
GUS DEWAR:
I´m so sorry about what I said
yesterday. I don´t know what came into
me, I was stressed from work and you
were the first person I saw, so I paid
it with you. I´m really sorry.
ROSE HELLMAN:
It´s ok, but please, don´t you ever
dare to tell me anything about my work
ever again. You can´t tell me what I
can and can´t do, that is up to me.
Got it?
GUS DEWAR:
Cristal clear.
Gus smiles at Rose and she smiles him back. She seems
uncomfortable.

Rose and Gus are headed home when Gus stops, Rose stops a few

meters away from him, waiting for her friend, but he doesn´t
move. Rose goes back until she reaches Gus.
GUS DEWAR:
(He gets in one knee) Marry me Rose.
Rose doesn´t move. She is surprised, and she doesn´t know
what to say. Gus sees that, he stands up and takes Rose´s
hand.
GUS DEWAR:
Rose, I´ve been in love with you for a
long time now. And you coming to live
with me, has made me fall in love with
you even more. Leave your work, come
back to the States with me, we will
see the world thanks to my job.
Rose takes her hand away from Gus´s hand.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Gus, we had this conversation
yesterday and not an hour ago you told
me you wouldn´t talk about my work
ever again. I´m not going to leave my
work and I´m not going to marry you
either.
GUS DEWAR:
For God´s shake Rose, you don´t do
anything important.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Gus, my place is in Paris, at Le
Figaro, doing the work I´ve always
wanted to do, and even if it´s not
under the conditions I dreamt of, no
one is going to take me out from
there.
GUS DEWAR:
Is so unfair that you are doing this
to me.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Unfair? No Gus, this is not unfair.
You though I would leave everything
for you and I would never do that, not
for you, not for anyone.

that insistence for me to stay at your

scared that I wouldn´t be needing you
any more and you couldn´t handle it.
The only reason why you would meet up
with me is because you wanted me to
marry you and become another wife.

Gus stays quiet and he doesn´t look at Rose.
ROSE HELLMAN:

50 INT. GUS´S FLAT. NIGHT.
Rose is at Gus´s house, picking up her things as fast as she
can, she doesn´t want to be in that house any longer.
Suddenly a letter comes under the door, Rose goes there and
sees that the letter belongs to her. She opens the door to
see if the person that left it is still there, but the
corridor is empty.
Rose takes a knife and opens the letter, is signed by Gaston,
he asks her to show up the next morning at the Le Figaro´s
office. Rose keeps the letter on the pocket of her jacket,
she takes the bag with the money and hides it between her
clothes.
Rose takes the suitcase and leaves the key to Gus´s flat.
Rose leaves without looking back.
51 EXT. MONTMARTRE NEIGHBORHOOD. NIGHT.
Rose arrives to Montmartre. She stares at the streets, full
of people, painters, singers, artists... She fells home.
Since she seems a bit lost an older man approaches her.

Are you lost miss?
ROSE HELLMAN:
A little actually, I´m looking for a
place to spend the night.
MAN:
(He points at the directions) At the
end of this street there´s a little
guesthouse, cheap, they can take you
there.
ROSE HELLMAN:
(Smiling) Thank you very much.
Rose follows the directions given by the man.
52 INT. GUESTHOUSE´S RECEPTION. NIGHT.
Rose arrives to the guesthouse. The reception is so little
and has a window at the end. Rose approaches the window and
she touches the doorbell. A woman approaches.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Good night.
RECEPTIONIST:
Good night.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Do you have any room left?
RECEPTIONIST:
Let me check (she takes out a book)
I´m sorry but we don´t have any free
space.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Nothing? Not even for tonight?
RECEPTIONIST:
No, I´m sorry.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Ok, thank you anyway.
Rose takes the suitcase and prepares to leave.
RECEPTIONIST:

woman.

There a free bed in a shared room,
where two girls live. Are you

RECEPTIONIST:

Ok (leaves the money on the table)
The receptionist takes it and leaves it in a box.
RECEPTIONIST:
What´s your name?
ROSE HELLMAN:
Rose Hellman.
The receptionist writes it down.
RECEPTIONIST:
Your room is number 15. Is in the
first floor, turn right while climbing
up the stairs.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Ok, thank you very much.
RECEPTIONIST:
Have a nice night.
Rose takes her suitcase and goes up the stairs.
53 INT. ROSE´S ROOM IN THE GUESTHOUSE. NIGHT.
Rose has a key, but she knocks on the door, just in case
someone is there. A girl of her age opens the door.
ROSE HELLMAN:
(Knocking on the door) Hi.
CELINE:
(Opening the door) Hi, who are you?

ROSE HELLMAN:
They told me that I have a bed in this
room.
CELINE:
Sure, come on in.
CELINE (22) welcomes her to come in and shows Rose which one
is her bed. Rose approaches the bed and leaves the suitcase
in it. At that moment another girl IVETTE (25) enters the
room.
CELINE:
Now that we are all here, my name is
Celine and this is Ivette.
IVETTE:
Hi, nice to meet you.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Nice to meet you too, I´m Rose.
CELINE:
And what brings you here?
ROSE HELLMAN:
I got into a huge fight with a friend
and I didn´t had anywhere to go. But
I´m happy to be here.
IVETTE:
Is a fun neighborhood, I´m not going
to deny that, nothing luxurious, but
fun.
CELINE:
And what do you do for a living.
ROSE HELLMAN:
I´m a journalist, or at least I tried
to be. I´m just begining.
IVETTE:
Then you are a journalist. We are
going out, do you want to come with
us?
ROSE HELLMAN:
No, thank you I have a meeting to go
to tomorrow and I need to sleep.

Ivette and Celine leave the room. Rose puts the suitcase down
and she lays down in the bed.

The next morning, Rose, climbs up the stairs running, she is
nervous. She leaves her thing at her table and walks all the
way to Gaston´s office.
55 INT. GASTON´S OFFICE. MORNING.
Gaston is seated in his desk.
GASTON CALMETTE:
Good morning Miss Hellman, please sit
down.
Rose enters the office and she sits.
GASTON CALMETTE:
I wanted to talk to you.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Go on.
GASTON CALMETTE:
I´m not happy with the work you have
been doing recently.
ROSE HELLMAN:
I don´t know where that comes from,
you only warned me once, and since
then I´ve done a nice work.
GASTON CALMETTE:
Yes, but the article was so important
for the newspaper and you made a
terrible mistake.
ROSE HELLMAN:
I told you on the phone, you could
have changed it.

ROSE HELLMAN:

(Interrupts Rose) Miss Hellman you are

Rose doesn´t know how to answer. She takes a few seconds to
process the information. Until she does it.
ROSE HELLMAN:
You can´t do that Mister Calmette.
GASTON CALMETTE:
Of course I can, that is what I´m
doing.
ROSE HELLMAN:
That is not fair. You should have told
me the mistakes I was making, so I
could change them.
GASTON CALMETTE:
Whatever, you are not a journalist and
you don´t have the experience. You
will never be important in this world.
ROSE HELLMAN:
You knew from the begining that I
wasn´t a journalist and you hired me
anyway.
GASTON CALMETTE:
Which was a mistake.
Rose stays still, and she takes away Gaston´s opportunity to
say anything else.
ROSE HELLMAN:

Rose stands up, streches Gaston´s hand and leaves.
56 INT. LE FIGARO´S OFFICE. MORNING.
Rose is at her desk, tiding everything up when a woman runs

in front of her. She goes directly to Gaston´s office, Rose
stares at her but doesn´t worry about her. Suddenly a strong
noise is heard in Gaston´s office, and the woman that passed
in front of Rose´s desk leaves the office running. One of
Rose´s colleagues, that has just arrived, goes to Gaston´s
office.
JOURNALIST:
Someone call and ambulance.
ROSE HELLMAN:
I will.
Rose takes the phone.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Hi, we need and ambulance in Le
Figaro´s offices, hurry please.
Rose hangs up and goes to Gaston´s office to see what
happens. Rose sees Gaston´s body laying on the floor with
several shoots in his chest. Her colleague is trying to keep
him alive. Rose doesn´t move.
57 INT. LE FIGARO´S OFFICE. MORNING.
After taking Gaston out the office is quiet. No one know what
to say.
EDITOR:
Please go back to work.
Rose doesn´t know what to do, she doesn´t know if anyone else
knows what happended between her and Gaston. The editor
approaches her.
EDITOR:
Please continue with your work Miss
Hellman.
Rose does what he told her to.
58 INT. ROSE´S ROOM IN THE GUESTHOUSE. NIGHT.
Rose arrives to the guesthouse. Celine and Ivette are ready
to go out.
CELINE:
We are going out Rose, do you want to

The three girls leave the room.
59 EXT. MONTMARTRE NEIGHBORHOOD. NIGHT.
Ivette, Celine and Rose walk down the street until they reach
the draftsman´s square. Rose supposes that they are going to
be there, but Ivette and Celine keep walking, and they call
Rose, so she would follow them. Rose follows them, not
knowing exactly where they are going.
After a while and after walking down at least three streets,
they stop in front of a very strange door. Rose looks up and
the facade is peculiar as well. The door is a monster with
the mouth open, the facade is surrounded by demons that move,
Rose reads the sign that is on top of the door, it says:
Cabaret L´Enfer.
Ivette and Celine enter, Rose follows them.
60 INT. CABARET L´ENFER. NIGHT.
Once they are inside Rose sees that the waiters are dressed
as demons and talk with diabolic words. Ivette, Celine and
Rose sit in a red table, the walls are surrounded by devil
statues as well.
IVETTE:
(Talking to the waiter) Waiter,
please, three coffees with cognac.
WAITER:
(Shouting) Three glasses of burning
sins.
After a while they give them the coffees.
WAITER:
There you go.
The girls drink from the cup, Ivette and Celine don´t blink
but Rose make a gesture that make Ivette and Celine laugh.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Why do you drink this?
IVETTE:
Is a little tradition. Our first night
here we came to this place, and order

Rose laughs and the three of them spend the time talking.
61 EXT. MONTMARTRE´S DRAFTSMAN SQUARE. NIGHT.
The three of them have left the cabaret and have seated in
the square. Just enjoying the night in Montmartre.
CELINE:
How went the day?
ROSE HELLMAN:
It´s been a strange day.
IVETTE:
Strange?
ROSE HELLMAN:
Yes, let me explain. A few months ago
I made a mistake when I was writing an
article, well it wasn´t a mistake, it
was a different view from what my boss
wanted. Yesterday I got a letter
telling me to be at the office today
as soon as possible. My boss was
waiting to fire me, taking advantage
of the mistake I told you about.
CELINE:
You got fired? I´m so sorry Rose.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Yes I got fired, but wait. When I left
my boss´s office a woman walked in,
and while I was cleaning up my place
I´ve heard a few shoots and the woman
has left the office in a hurry. So the
shoots have been directed to my boss,
they took him to the hospital, I
didn´t know what to do, until the
editor has reached me and told me to
continue with my work, so that´s what
I did.
IVETTE:
So, no one know about what he had to
told you, besides you two.

That´s right, and he died on his way
to the hospital.
CELINE:
Did you plan the murder?
ROSE HELLMAN:
(Laughs) No I didn´t, but it was
perfect timing, even if that might
sound insensitive. It seems that
Minister Caillaux wife´s did it. My
boss had some letters they send each
other before they were married, and
while they were both married to other
people. Gaston had the intention to
release them so the Minister´s
reputation would be damaged, her wife
went to ask him not to do so, he
refused to she shot him.
IVETTE:
That is one hell of a political
conspiracy.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Looks like it. But I think is more of
an infidelity situation. Let´s stop
talking about me, what about you
girls? What do you do?
IVETTE:
I´m a painter, but don´t you think is
an easy job. I never got the chance to
go to art school, I learnt by myself,
but I don´t sell that many paintings,
so I work at the guesthouse, so I can
earn a bit of money and buy the
materials I need to paint.
CELINE:
I´m a singer in a Cabaret, the Moulin
Rouge. Is not what I thought it would
be, but I can make a living for a
while with that. I´m still waiting for
the day I can become an international
singer and travel the world.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Those lifes are worth living, now I
fell like mine is so simple.

Rose goes back to the guesthouse. Ivette and Celine stay
seated at the square.

The next morning, Rose goes down to have breakfast and sits
with Celine at the table, while Ivette serves the breakfast.
CELINE:
What are your plans for today?
ROSE HELLMAN:
I don´t know, first work and then I
guess I will come here directly.
CELINE:
(Gives her a paper) Today I play a
paper in the Moulin Rouge, I would
love if you come, Ivette is coming
too.
ROSE HELLMAN:
(Smiles) I´ll be there, thank you for
the invitation (takes the paper).
(Looks at the clock) Wow, I have to
leave, I see you tonight.
Rose stands up and leaves the guesthouse.

Rose arrives to the office and sits on her desk, when ALFRED
CAPUS (56) approaches.
ALFRED CAPUS:

Alfred gives Rose the glass and sits in front of him.

Rose doesn´t say a word.

The new editor doesn´t know anything
about the dismissal. I keep the deal I
had with Gaston.
IVETTE:
Thank God, I thought you would have to
leave the job.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Yes I thought that too, what did you
guys do?
IVETTE:
I helped Celine prepared for the play
today and I started a new painting, it
was a nice day.
Rose smiles and Celine walks out of a door.
CELINE:
Ivette, Rose. Come here.
Ivette and Rose see her and enter after her.
66 EXT. MONTMARTE. NIGHT.
MOUNTING SECUENCE.
Ivette, Celine and Rose are seated in the draftsmen square.
They wait to enter to Cabaret de L´Enfer. Celine sneaks them
into the Moulin Rouge, they see how Ivette draws paintings in
the Sacre Coeur. Rose comes and goes to the office. As months
go by.

Rose is seated on her desk writing an article when Alfred
approaches her and gives her an envelope.
ALFRED CAPUS:
(Giving her the envelope) This is for

ROSE HELLMAN:

ALFRED CAPUS:
Four train tickets, go and back.
ROSE HELLMAN:
And they will take me to...?
ALFRED CAPUS:
Sarajevo. You must cover the military
manoeuvres that are going to take
place in the city. The Archduke,
Fernando of Austria is going there in
representation of the Austro-hungarian
empire.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Is a bit strange to cover a new like
that...(she thinks for a minute). You
want to see how the Bosnian citizens
react to the visit. Isn´t it?
ALFRED CAPUS:
You got it, you know how strong is
becoming the idea of independence in a
lot of Balkanic countries, I want to
see how they receive him.
ROSE HELLMAN:
Ok.
ALFRED CAPUS:
You will go to Bucharest in the Orient
Express and then you will take a train
that will take you to Sarajevo. I want
the article publish the next day, so
either you wrote me a telegram or you
call me. Got it?
ROSE HELLMAN:

Rose is preparing the suitcase when Celine and Ivette enter.
IVETTE:
(Entering the room) And where are you
going?
ROSE HELLMAN:
I have to go to Sarajevo to cover an
event. I leave tomorrow.
IVETTE:
And when do you come back?
ROSE HELLMAN:
In two weeks.
CELINE:
Then this is your last night here for
the next two weeks, maybe we should go
out.
The look at each other.
ROSE HELLMAN:

69 EXT. SARAJEVO´S CITY HALL. DAY.
Rose is waiting outside the city hall of Sarajevo, there are
a lot of journalists and photographers, waiting for the
archduke and his wife to come.
One of the journalists goes running to the stairs.
JOURNALIST:
They are going to be a bit late. They
tried to kill the archdukes when they
were on their way here.
Everyone looks at the journalist and start asking.
PHOTOGRAPHER:
Where did it happended?

Everyone goes back to their places.
70 EXT. SARAJEVO´S CITY HALL. DAY.
An hour later a car arrives, the Archdukes are in it. The
photographers and journalists jump on them. The Archduke and
his wife get out of the car and put themselves behind the
mayor.
SARAJEVO´S MAYOR:
We are so sorry to be this late. I
would like to welcome to our beautiful
city, the Archduke Fernando of Austria
and her wife Sofia.
ARCHDUKE FERNANDO:
I´m sorry to interrupt you mayor, but
I would like to report that my wife
and I have suffered an attack couple
of times during the day, that is what
you should be telling on your
newspapers.
The mayor doesn´t speak, finally he approaches the table.
SARAJEVO´S MAYOR:
The Archduke has come to check the
manoeuvre that the army is making in
our city. I will let him speak.
ARCHDUKE FERNANDO:
Thank you mayor. I would like to say
that our army is strong and ready to
handle any critical situation. That
being said all the acts for today are
suspended.
The journalists star shouting.
ARCHDUKE FERNANDO:
(Shouting) In the attacks that wanted

injured people and we want to go to
visit them in the hospital.
The journalists shout even more. The Archduke and his wife
step down the stairs of the city hall, get into the car and
go back to where they come from.
71 EXT. SARAJEVO'S STREET. DAY.
All the journalists begin to leave the city hall when the
archdukes leave. When everything is cleared up, a shoot is
heard, everyone quiets, after that a scream is heard,
followed by two more gunshots.
The journalists run in the direction of the gunshots, they
see the car in the middle of the street, and the police is
arresting a man. There's a lot of blood, Rose looks up and
sees the duchess bleeding from the stomach, unconscious. The
archduke is bleeding from his neck, trying to reach his wife.
The policeman that travelled with the archdukes moves their
bodies to another car and leave the place immediatly. The
journalists are quiet, they don´t move, don´t write, they are
just looking at the street.
While all the journalists hold still, Rose leaves the place

Rose enters running into the hotel.
ROSE HELLMAN:
(Heavily breathing) Do you have a

The receptionist marks the number and gives Rose the phone.

She waits for a few seconds.

I don´t know. But listen, they say,
that the man that shoot them is from
Bosnia. It may suppose a huge change
to the Austro-Hungarian empire.

ROSE HELLMAN:

Rose approaches the telegraph. Takes out the book and writes
the information Alfred askes her for. She finish it and sends
it, the heading says: "The Austrian Archdukes suffered an
attack in Sarajevo".

A man enters the reception running.
MAN:
The archdukes are dead. The duchess
died on her way to the hospital, and
the duke died ten minutes after.
Rose was seated, she stands up and goes to the telegraph. Now
the headline is changed: "The Austrian Archdukes murdered in
an attack in the city of Sarajevo".

Rose arrives with her suitcase to Le Figaro´s office. She
leaves her staff in her place and walks to Alfred´s office.
ROSE HELLMAN:
(Knocking at the door). Mister Capus,

ROSE HELLMAN:

Rose sits down while Alfred continues talking on the phone.
He moves his hands and arms really fast, he seems angry.

Rose writes a letter as soon as she arrives to her room. She
takes an envelope, is directed to Alfred Capus.

Rose leaves the letter in the reception and goes back to her

Rose opens the letter excited, so excited that Ivette and
Celine look at her. Rose finish reading the letter and looks

Celine and Ivette don´t say a word. They are worried and Rose
notices that, so she approaches them.

Rose arrives to the train station when her train arrives.
Soldiers come out from the back of the train, some of them in
stretcher, some holding their parters because they can´t
walk, other carry dead bodies. Rose is surprised with
everything she is seeing, just like everyone else. Rose hopes
into the train.

Rose finds her place and leaves the bag under her seat. After
a while ADRIEN FONTAINE (27) sits in front of her.

and everything is so quiet. Adrien and Rose look for a place
to stay. Is hard to walk down the streets, everything is
fulled of rubble.
Suddenly in the quiet night a strong noise is heard, followed
by a ray of light.
ROSE HELLMAN:
That must come from the front, we
can´t be far.
ADRIEN FONTAINE:
I think we are 10 kilometres away, so
let´s be awared, just in case. There´s

Rose and Adrien continue walking down the streets of Amiens.

Rose and Adrien arrive to a little guesthouse, fulled of
soldiers and officers. All of them stare at Rose, she is the
only woman there. Adrien and Rose approach the counter.
ADRIEN FONTAINE:
Good night we are looking for a room.
RECEPTIONIST:
We don´t have anything.
The receptionist leaves. Rose and Adrien look at each other
not knowing what to do, a woman approaches them.
WOMAN:
I´ve heard that you are looking for a
room.
ROSE HELLMAN:
That´s right.
WOMAN:
I´ve got a few free beds in my house,
nothing big, but you can stay if you
want to.
Rose and Adrien look at each other, Adrien agrees.

Rose and Adrien are in the town´s square, waiting for the
officers that are going to take them to the front. Rose only
has a notebook and a pencil while Adrien carries his camera.
An officer appears.

ROSE HELLMAN:

They follow him into an alley and they hope into a lorry.
They are on their way to the front.
87 EXT. FIELD. MORNING.
When they reach a field, the lorry stops.
OFFICER:

trenches, all of them are connected.
The trench´s that connect them are
called zigzag trenches, those are
safer. The parallels are the ones

After a few meters, like the officer said, a soldier is
waiting for them.

They walk trough the trench.

Suddenly a pile of soil jumps. The three of them bend.
SOLDIER:
Get used to that, it will be much more
usual once we get closer to the first
line.
They arrive to a hidden place into the soil, there a table
and a few maps.
SOLDIER:
Wait here.
The soldier leaves, Adrien and Rose wait. While they are
there a few stretchers with men bleeding pass right next to
Rose and Adrien. They look at each other but don´t say a
word. The soldier comes back.
SOLDIER:
You must wear these helmets from now
on. I know you come here to do your
work, but please don´t distract the
soldiers. From now on you will be
alone, good luck.
The soldier gives them the helmets and leaves. Rose and
Adrien put the helmets on and go ahead.

Rose and Adrien walk down the zigzag trenches, when they
reach a parallel they see a soldier shooting.

There are quite a lot of soldiers
shooting, we must be close to the

while Rose does the same so she can interview a few soldiers.
Moving through the trench is complicated, there are a lot of
obstacles.
While Rose is interviewing a soldier, the trench they are in
suddenly covers of dirt. A trench has exploded. Rose follows
the soldiers she was interviewing.
ROSE HELLMAN:
What is happening?
SOLDIER 2:
The trench that was ahead of us has
just exploded, which means this is now
the first line. We have to organize to
defend this one and change the
strategy in the others.
The soldier leaves. Rose search for Adrien, who is taking
pictures. She approaches him.

Adrien, the trench has exploded, we
are now in the first line. We should

Rose and Adrien are coming back from the trenches. It´s been
two months since the battle started.
ROSE HELLMAN:
It´s a good thing that the battle was
going to be quick, it´s been two
months and nothing has changed.
ADRIEN FONTAINE:
Yes. We are lucky.
ROSE HELLMAN:
This battle will be remembered. I´m

They sit in a bench, Adrien sees a bottle of rum closed on

Adrien drinks and then gives it to Rose. They stay in the

93 EXT. TRENCH. MORNING.
The next Rose and Adrien continue doing the work they have
been doing for the past few months, Adrien takes pictures and
Rose interviews soldiers and officers. It seems like another
morning at the front.
Suddenly a bomb explodes in the trench Adrien and Rose were
in. Everything is dark and quiet. Adrien stands up hardly, he
tries to find a place to hold on to, to find a way out of
there before everything gets worse. He sees a few bags closed
to the walls of the trench. He holds on to that. He is now
completely stand up.
He looks around trying to look for Rose.

Adrien walks slowly to find Rose. He sees her notebook and a
few meters away Rose is laying down on the floor. She has
bags on her legs that don´t let her move. Adrien moves the
bags.
ADRIEN FONTAINE:
Come on, I will help you to stand, we
have to leave. Are you ok?
Rose doesn´t say a thing. Then Adrien looks around he sees
that there´s a lot of blood, Rose has is jumper full of
blood. She is bleeding from her abdomen.
ADRIEN FONTAINE:
It´s ok, I will help you.
Rose agrees, she is scared. Adrien takes of is jumper and
cover the wound. Then he grabs Rose around his back, he runs
until the next trench.
94 EXT. TRENCH. MORNING.
In the next trench the nurses are helping with the wounded.
They approach Rose and Adrien when they see them.
NURSE 1:
(Approaching Adrien) What happened?
ADRIEN FONTAINE:
A bomb has exploded in the trench we
were in. She is bleeding from her
abdomen, it doesn´t stop.
NURSE 1:
Ok, put her here. (He points at a
stretcher)
Adrien lays Rose down. He stays next to the stretcher. The
nurses take of Adrien jumper from Rose´s abdomen.
NURSE 2:
It, doesn´t look good, we can´t take
her out of the trench, she will die.
We have to cure her here.
NURSE 1:
Ok, give something to clean the wound,

Now you can leave. ROSE HELLMAN: Goodbye. Rose leaves the office. 2 EXT. OUTSIDE THE OFFICE. MORNING Rose picks up her things and goes out of the building. There is a car waiting for her, Rose doesn´t like that, and we can see how her expression changes while she arrives to the car. ROSE HELLMAN: (Talking to the driver) Thank you for coming for me, but I will go walking home. CAR DRIVER: Miss Hellman, you have to come with me, is not nice to see a woman walking alone on the streets of Paris. ROSE HELLMAN: I don´t care. I´ve spent the whole day at the office drawing, I would like to take some fresh air. CAR DRIVER: This are your fathers orders, you have to come with me. ELIZABETH HELLMAN: Well that´s nice, you can take your mind off for a few hours a day. ROSE HELLMAN: And you, dad? Is there anything new to tell?

EMBASSY´S GARDEN. MORNING. At the end of lunch the three of them are at the garden. Suddenly one of the servants (65) approaches Rose.

ROSE HELLMAN: Mr. Vogel, he asked me to do another assignment. Elizabeth smiles forcibly. WILLIAM HELLMAN: I don´t understand why do you love to work that much. You have all you need. ROSE HELLMAN: You know I prefer to be an independent person, and not be always protected by you guys. I know is hard to understand for you. WILLIAM HELLMAN: Well, your future husband is not going to be this tolerant. You will have to work to make him happy. ROSE HELLMAN: Maybe I don´t want to get married,

Rose is at the embassy´s living room reading the politics section of different newspapers. Someone approaches her, is her old friend GUS DEWAR (26). GUS DEWAR: (Touching her shoulder) Hello. ROSE HELLMAN: Hi Gus! She stands up and hugs him. They both stand. ROSE HELLMAN: What are you doing here? I thought you were in Washington. GUS DEWAR: The meetings with the president are finished now, so I´ve got a few days off. ROSE HELLMAN: So are you staying in Paris for a while?

He seems happy to see Gus, but not so happy to see her daughter. WILLIAM HELLMAN: Good night Gus. GUS DEWAR: Hello Mr. Hellman. How are you? WILLIAM HELLMAN: Good, very good. How is the president? Gus and Rose arrive to the embassy. GUS DEWAR: I hope that your application for the job goes well. Rose climbs a step. ROSE HELLMAN: Thank you. I hope to see you soon. GUS DEWAR: With my job you never know, but don´t worry, I will come to visit you whenever I can. ROSE HELLMAN: Nice, (hugs him) take care Gus. GUS DEWAR: You too. While Rose climbs the steps, Gus stares at her. 9 INT. WILLIAM HELLMAN´S OFFICE. NIGHT. That same night Rose enters her father's office on the sly. She sits at his table and begins to write the letter requesting an interview with the editor of Le Figaro. When she finishes, she signs as Rose Hellman. Rosa knows she won't be able to send a letter without her parents wanting to know who is for, so she puts them in the pile of letters that her father has to send. 10 INT. EMBASSY´S LIVING ROOM. NIGHT. When she leaves the office she checks out that nobody is watching, her father doesn´t like when someone enters his office, and specially if is a woman. When Rose starts climbing up the stairs, her mother shows up. ELIZABETH HELLMAN: Rose, where have you been? Is late.

Rose spends weeks looking at the mailbox, waiting the answer from Le Figaro. Every morning she picks up the mail, she goes before her father, in case a letter is named to Rose her dad will want to read it first. 12 INT. ROSE´S ROOM. MORNING. A week after sending the letter to Le Figaro Rose gets a letter from the newspaper, she picks the letter, hides it into her dress so her parents won´t see her. She climbs up the stair and gets into her room. She opens the letter. Rose seems upset about the answer, they have rejected her. In the letter they say that she is not what they are looking for and that makes Rose suspicious. Rose needs to know what is happening, so she decides to go to Le Figaro´s office. 13 INT. EMBASSY´S RECEPTION. MORNING. Rose goes down the stairs, takes her coat and when she is about to leave the driver stops her.

DRIVER: You know the rules, you can´t go anywhere... (he is interrupted) ROSE HELLMAN: (Interrupting the driver)...alone. I know, but come on I´m in a hurry. The driver opens the car door and Rose´s enters. 14 INT. LE FIGARO´S OFFICE. MORNING. Rose leaves the car and goes into the office. All the people there are men, the come and go running, without looking anywhere. All Rosa hears is the sound of the keys, and people talking. Rose stays, for a while, just staring. When she recovers she approaches a woman´s table. ROSE HELLMAN: I´m sorry, I´m looking for Gaston Calmette´s office. SECRETARY: Is at the end of the hall (she points at the direction) ROSE HELLMAN: Thank you. Rose goes to the end of the hall and knocks on the door. 15 INT. GASTON CALMETTE´S OFFICE. MORNING. Rose knocks on GASTON CALMETTE´S (55) door. GASTON CALMETTE: Come on in. Rose opens the door and goes in. GASTON CALMETTE: Please, sit down.

Rose goes to the Le Figaro´s office the next day. She jumps into the car and goes back to the office. Rose sits outside Gaston´s office and waits. 19 INT. LE FIGARO´S OFFICE. MORNING. After a couple of hours Gaston goes out of his office to have lunch, and he sees Rose waiting while she reads the newspaper.

Gaston goes in and leaves the door open, Rose goes after him. Rose enters and sits in front of Gaston. GASTON CALMETTE: Good, let´s see how much you know about politics. I´m sure you´ve heard about the visit that King George v is going to make to Berlin. ROSE HELLMAN: Yes, I´ve heard something. After a while she stands up and goes to Lucien´s office. ROSE HELLMAN: (Knocking the door) LUCIEN VOGEL: Come in. ROSE HELLMAN: (Opens the door) Good morning Mr Vogel. LUCIEN VOGEL: Hi Rose. ROSE HELLMAN: This is what you asked for. LUCIEN VOGEL: Oh, ok, thank you. Lucien stands up and takes an envelope. He gives it to Rose and he sits again. ROSE HELLMAN: Mr. Vogel, may I speak to you? LUCIEN VOGEL: Of course, please sit down (he points at the chair that is in front of him) ROSE HELLMAN: (Sits down) I have found a good job as a journalis at Le Figaro and I need to give the hundred percent, I´m afraid I will have to leave the Gazette. SERVANT: (Knocking at the door) Miss Hellman? ROSE HELLMAN: Yes, (Standing up from the chair), come in. SERVANT: A new telegram for you. ROSE HELLMAN: Thank you very much. The servant leaves. Rose stays up reading the telegram she just received, is from Gaston telling her the schedule and that the next day she begins her work at Le Figaro. Suddenly Elizabeth knocks on the door. ELIZABETH HELLMAN: (Knocking at the door) We are going to have dinner, come down. Elizabeth enters. ROSE HELLMAN: (Hiding the telegram in the book) I´m coming. ELIZABETH HELLMAN: Rose, stop reading, didn´t you heard me?

EMBASSY´S RECEPTION. MORNING. The next morning Rose leaves her room on the sly. The embassy is quiet, the only noise is coming from the kitchen, they are preparing the breakfast. Rose knows that if the driver sees her he is going to tell his father, and he will be suspicious. So she leaves from the service door as fast as she can. 27 EXT. STREETS OF PARIS. MORNING. After leaving the embassy Rose walks down the streets of Paris. Rose is not used to walk alone in Paris, which makes her look everywhere. Paris has just woke up, is a cold morning but everything is quiet. Rose approaches Palais Garnier, she turns left on the Boulevard, and she gets into Le Figaro´s office, she enters excited. 28 INT. LE FIGARO´S OFFICE. MORNING. Rose climbs up the stairs of the office. Gaston sees her. GASTON CALMETTE: Good morning Miss Hellman. ROSE HELLMAN: Good morning. GASTON CALMETTE: You are early. (He lets Rose go first) ROSE HELLMAN: (She thanks Gaston with a look) Yes, I wanted to check in early, since is my first day. GASTON CALMETTE: Very clever. Both arrive to the office. Now Gaston goes first. GASTON CALMETTE: Please come with me.

GASTON CALMETTE: You can begin now. Gaston leaves. He watches Rose from a distance while she begins to write. 29 INT. EMBASSY´S RECEPTION. MORNING. Rose arrives home after lunchtime, she enters through the principal door, knowing that everyone will she her. Elizabeth is waiting for her. ELIZABETH HELLMAN: May I know where have you been? ROSE HELLMAN: Hello to you too mom (Rose gives her coat to the servants) Thank you (to the servants) ELIZABETH HELLMAN: You haven´t reply yet. ROSE HELLMAN: I went to Le Figaro´s office. This is a bit of Romanian money, so you can pay things there. ROSE HELLMAN: Ok. GASTON CALMETTE: Another thing. I need you to inform me as soon as possible, about everything you see and listen. Once the agreement is signed you have to send me the information, so we can publish it the next day. So either call or send a telegram, understood? ROSE HELLMAN: Yes sir. BUCHAREST HOTEL. DAY. Rose arrives to a tiny hotel which is nothing like the embassy. The hotel may fall into pieces at any moment, something that Rose doesn´t like at first. At the end there is a counter a well-dressed man is there. ROSE HELLMAN: Good morning. I would like to ask for a room. RECEPTIONIST: (Speaking Romanian) ROSE HELLMAN: I´m sorry, I don´t understand. RECEPTIONIST: (Keeps talking in Romanian) RACHEL COOK (27) sees what is happening to Rose and approaches her. RACHEL COOK: Hi, may I help you? ROSE HELLMAN: I need a room for a few days, I come to sign the peace agreement. RACHEL COOK: (Talks in Romanian with the receptionist) The receptionist gives Rachel a key and she gives it to Rose. ROSE HELLMAN: Rachel I´ve seen that you have a lot of practice, I don´t know what would have I done if it wasn´t for you. Have you been doing this for long? RACHEL COOK: A while now, I work for a magazine London. I usually cover news around Europe, no one wants to travel that much, and lately with all that is going on no one dares to leave England to come to the continent. When he is reading it, he seems to be upset which worries Rose. After a while Gaston sits in front of Rose. GASTON CALMETTE: I´m not very convinced about what you´ve written.

He says that is too pacifist and that I took advantage of my position to tell politicians how to their work. Oh, and that I gave my opinion and by that I made people took a stance. GUS DEWAR: But you write in the politics section. ROSE HELLMAN: That is what I told him, but he doesn´t understand.

Rose is at Gus´s house, picking up her things as fast as she can, she doesn´t want to be in that house any longer. Suddenly a letter comes under the door, Rose goes there and sees that the letter belongs to her. She opens the door to see if the person that left it is still there, but the corridor is empty. Rose takes a knife and opens the letter, is signed by Gaston, he asks her to show up the next morning at the Le Figaro´s office. Rose keeps the letter on the pocket of her jacket, she takes the bag with the money and hides it between her clothes. Rose takes the suitcase and leaves the key to Gus´s flat. Rose leaves without looking back. 51 EXT. MONTMARTRE NEIGHBORHOOD. NIGHT. Rose arrives to Montmartre. She stares at the streets, full of people, painters, singers, artists... She fells home. RECEPTIONIST: Let me check (she takes out a book) I´m sorry but we don´t have any free space. ROSE HELLMAN: Nothing? Not even for tonight? RECEPTIONIST: No, I´m sorry. IVETTE: Hi, nice to meet you. ROSE HELLMAN: Nice to meet you too, I´m Rose. CELINE: And what brings you here? ROSE HELLMAN: I got into a huge fight with a friend and I didn´t had anywhere to go. But I´m happy to be here. IVETTE: Is a fun neighborhood, I´m not going to deny that, nothing luxurious, but fun. CELINE: And what do you do for a living. ROSE HELLMAN: I´m a journalist, or at least I tried to be. I´m just begining. IVETTE: Then you are a journalist. We are going out, do you want to come with us? ROSE HELLMAN: No, thank you I have a meeting to go to tomorrow and I need to sleep.

GASTON CALMETTE: Good morning Miss Hellman, please sit down. Rose enters the office and she sits. GASTON CALMETTE: I wanted to talk to you. ROSE HELLMAN: Go on. GASTON CALMETTE: I´m not happy with the work you have been doing recently. ROSE HELLMAN: I don´t know where that comes from, you only warned me once, and since then I´ve done a nice work. GASTON CALMETTE: Yes, but the article was so important for the newspaper and you made a terrible mistake. ROSE HELLMAN: I told you on the phone, you could have changed it.

LE FIGARO´S OFFICE. MORNING. Rose is at her desk, tiding everything up when a woman runs

Suddenly a strong noise is heard in Gaston´s office, and the woman that passed in front of Rose´s desk leaves the office running. One of Rose´s colleagues, that has just arrived, goes to Gaston´s office. JOURNALIST: Someone call and ambulance. ROSE HELLMAN: I will. Rose takes the phone. ROSE HELLMAN: Hi, we need and ambulance in Le Figaro´s offices, hurry please. Rose hangs up and goes to Gaston´s office to see what happens. Rose sees Gaston´s body laying on the floor with several shoots in his chest. Her colleague is trying to keep him alive. Rose doesn´t move. 57 INT. LE FIGARO´S OFFICE. MORNING. After taking Gaston out the office is quiet. No one know what to say. EDITOR: Please go back to work. Rose doesn´t know what to do, she doesn´t know if anyone else knows what happended between her and Gaston. The editor approaches her. EDITOR: Please continue with your work Miss Hellman. Rose does what he told her to. 58 INT. ROSE´S ROOM IN THE GUESTHOUSE. NIGHT. Rose arrives to the guesthouse. Celine and Ivette are ready to go out. CELINE: We are going out Rose, do you want to come?
  • 55. 55. Created using Celtx ROSE HELLMAN: Yes, of course. The three girls leave the room. 59 EXT. MONTMARTRE NEIGHBORHOOD. NIGHT. Ivette, Celine and Rose walk down the street until they reach the draftsman´s square. Rose supposes that they are going to be there, but Ivette and Celine keep walking, and they call Rose, so she would follow them. Rose follows them, not knowing exactly where they are going. After a while and after walking down at least three streets, they stop in front of a very strange door. Rose looks up and the facade is peculiar as well. The door is a monster with the mouth open, the facade is surrounded by demons that move, Rose reads the sign that is on top of the door, it says: Cabaret L´Enfer. Ivette and Celine enter, Rose follows them. 60 INT. CABARET L´ENFER. NIGHT. Once they are inside Rose sees that the waiters are dressed as demons and talk with diabolic words. Ivette, Celine and Rose sit in a red table, the walls are surrounded by devil statues as well. IVETTE: (Talking to the waiter) Waiter, please, three coffees with cognac. WAITER: (Shouting) Three glasses of burning sins. After a while they give them the coffees. WAITER: There you go. The girls drink from the cup, Ivette and Celine don´t blink but Rose make a gesture that make Ivette and Celine laugh. ROSE HELLMAN: Why do you drink this? IVETTE: Is a little tradition. Rose laughs and the three of them spend the time talking. 61 EXT. MONTMARTRE´S DRAFTSMAN SQUARE. NIGHT. The three of them have left the cabaret and have seated in the square. Just enjoying the night in Montmartre. CELINE: How went the day? ROSE HELLMAN: It´s been a strange day. IVETTE: Strange? ROSE HELLMAN: Yes, let me explain. A few months ago I made a mistake when I was writing an article, well it wasn´t a mistake, it was a different view from what my boss wanted. Yesterday I got a letter telling me to be at the office today as soon as possible. My boss was waiting to fire me, taking advantage of the mistake I told you about. CELINE: You got fired? I´m so sorry Rose. ROSE HELLMAN: Yes I got fired, but wait. When I left my boss´s office a woman walked in, and while I was cleaning up my place I´ve heard a few shoots and the woman has left the office in a hurry. The next morning, Rose goes down to have breakfast and sits with Celine at the table, while Ivette serves the breakfast. CELINE: What are your plans for today? ROSE HELLMAN: I don´t know, first work and then I guess I will come here directly. CELINE: (Gives her a paper) Today I play a paper in the Moulin Rouge, I would love if you come, Ivette is coming too. ROSE HELLMAN: (Smiles) I´ll be there, thank you for the invitation (takes the paper). (Looks at the clock) Wow, I have to leave, I see you tonight. Rose stands up and leaves the guesthouse. 63 INT. LE FIGARO´S OFFICE. MORNING. Rose arrives to the office and sits on her desk, when ALFRED CAPUS (56) approaches. ALFRED CAPUS: Who are you?

Ivette, Celine and Rose are seated in the draftsmen square. They wait to enter to Cabaret de L´Enfer. Celine sneaks them into the Moulin Rouge, they see how Ivette draws paintings in the Sacre Coeur. ALFRED CAPUS: Sarajevo. You must cover the military manoeuvres that are going to take place in the city. The Archduke, Fernando of Austria is going there in representation of the Austro-hungarian empire. ROSE HELLMAN: Is a bit strange to cover a new like that...(she thinks for a minute). You want to see how the Bosnian citizens react to the visit. Isn´t it? ALFRED CAPUS: You got it, you know how strong is becoming the idea of independence in a lot of Balkanic countries, I want to see how they receive him. ROSE HELLMAN: Ok. IVETTE: And when do you come back? ROSE HELLMAN: In two weeks. CELINE: Then this is your last night here for the next two weeks, maybe we should go out. The look at each other. ROSE HELLMAN: Maybe we should. 69 EXT. SARAJEVO´S CITY HALL. DAY. Rose is waiting outside the city hall of Sarajevo, there are a lot of journalists and photographers, waiting for the archduke and his wife to come. One of the journalists goes running to the stairs. JOURNALIST: They are going to be a bit late. They tried to kill the archdukes when they were on their way here. Everyone looks at the journalist and start asking. PHOTOGRAPHER: Where did it happended?

Everyone goes back to their places. 70 EXT. SARAJEVO´S CITY HALL. DAY. An hour later a car arrives, the Archdukes are in it. The photographers and journalists jump on them. The Archduke and his wife get out of the car and put themselves behind the mayor. SARAJEVO´S MAYOR: We are so sorry to be this late. I would like to welcome to our beautiful city, the Archduke Fernando of Austria and her wife Sofia. ARCHDUKE FERNANDO: I´m sorry to interrupt you mayor, but I would like to report that my wife and I have suffered an attack couple of times during the day, that is what you should be telling on your newspapers. The mayor doesn´t speak, finally he approaches the table. SARAJEVO´S MAYOR: The Archduke has come to check the manoeuvre that the army is making in our city. I will let him speak. ARCHDUKE FERNANDO: Thank you mayor. I would like to say that our army is strong and ready to handle any critical situation. That being said all the acts for today are suspended. The Archduke and his wife step down the stairs of the city hall, get into the car and go back to where they come from. 71 EXT. SARAJEVO'S STREET. DAY. All the journalists begin to leave the city hall when the archdukes leave. When everything is cleared up, a shoot is heard, everyone quiets, after that a scream is heard, followed by two more gunshots. The journalists run in the direction of the gunshots, they see the car in the middle of the street, and the police is arresting a man. There's a lot of blood, Rose looks up and sees the duchess bleeding from the stomach, unconscious. The archduke is bleeding from his neck, trying to reach his wife. The policeman that travelled with the archdukes moves their bodies to another car and leave the place immediatly. The journalists are quiet, they don´t move, don´t write, they are just looking at the street. While all the journalists hold still, Rose leaves the place running. 72 INT. SARAJEVO´S HOTEL RECEPTION. DAY. Rose enters running into the hotel. ROSE HELLMAN: (Heavily breathing) Do you have a phone? RECEPCIONIST: Yes, over there (points in the direction) Where do you want to call? ROSE HELLMAN: A conference with Paris. The receptionist marks the number and gives Rose the phone. Alfred´s secretary picks up the phone. SECRETARY: Le Figaro´s office. How may I help you?

ALFRED CAPUS: What is it? ROSE HELLMAN: During the whole morning have been some attempts to kill the archdukes, but they didn´t make it. Until they reached the city hall, at the end of the reception they both have been shoot in an alley next to the hall. ALFRED CAPUS: Oh my god, are they alive? ROSE HELLMAN: I don´t know. But listen, they say, that the man that shoot them is from Bosnia. It may suppose a huge change to the Austro-Hungarian empire. ALFRED CAPUS: I know, I know. Ok, let´s do this, send me the information you have in a telegram, as redacted as possible. ROSE HELLMAN: Ok. ALFRED CAPUS: If something happens send another telegram updating the information. As soon as possible.

MAN: The archdukes are dead. The duchess died on her way to the hospital, and the duke died ten minutes after. Rose was seated, she stands up and goes to the telegraph. Now the headline is changed: "The Austrian Archdukes murdered in an attack in the city of Sarajevo". 74 INT. ALFRED CAPUS OFFICE. MORNING. Rose arrives with her suitcase to Le Figaro´s office. She leaves her staff in her place and walks to Alfred´s office. ROSE HELLMAN: (Knocking at the door). Mister Capus, I´m Rose. ALFRED CAPUS: Go ahead. She wears trousers, and has long hair. She surrounded by papers she is trying to organize. Ivette and Celine the room. IVETTE: Hi Rose. Now everything is closed, at least they said that this would only take a few months, it´s been two years. ROSE HELLMAN: Oh, and it´s going to get longer. CELINE: I miss everything we did before the war started... When the Moulin Rouge burnt down I thought it would be easy to find a new place to sing, turns out I was wrong. The war has takes away all the fun. Now I work in a hospital, me! In a hospital! IVETTE: There´s a thing I never thought I will see. I can´t even paint, there are no material left, and no one has the money to buy paintings. You are so lucky to get to do the work you love during this time. Alfred throws the article to the rubbish. ROSE HELLMAN: (Angry) Hey! I spent three days writing that! ALFRED CAPUS: I´m sorry Rose. That was a call from the government, we can´t publish that article. ROSE HELLMAN: Why not? ALFRED CAPUS: Because all the articles we write from now on must be to cheer up the country of France. They think that the information given on the newspapers might be used by the enemies to know which is the strategy that the government is following. ROSE HELLMAN: They are forbiding us to write about certain topics.
