2. 5 Best Practices for Virtual Interviews
You have graduated high school or college. Now you're ready for your first real job. You've
mailed out resumes and applied to various roles on job portals. Finally, you got a callback
from a good company for your first virtual interview. It’s ok to feel a little confused about what
to do and what not to do. Applycup’s expert recruiting team has listed five best practices for
virtual interviews.
3. 1. Dress for the Occasion
No midriff shirts, low-cut blouses, or flip-flops because you're going to work and not the
beach. Even if the interview is online, formal dress-up gives you confidence. It also shows the
employer that you are disciplined. You don’t have to buy a suit just for one virtual interview. It
is particularly important to look professional. If you are building a career in a conservative
sector such as accounting or field sales, you have to follow the formal dress-up rule. If you
apply for a retail position, you can choose your dress freely. Rather than list what clothing is
and is not acceptable, I would tell you to dress as if you were going to meet one of the most
important people in your life - because you are!
4. 2. Technology Check
Check and recheck your network connection before joining the interview. Make sure all other
windows are closed, and the camera, microphone, and other devices are working. Always join
the interview fifteen minutes early. In case of any technical error, there is no need to panic. Let
the interviewer know as soon as you can with an alternate availability for the interview.
5. 3. The Small Digital Things
Your right video frame is the new equivalent of a firm handshake. There are various small
things you have to keep in mind when you are going in a virtual interview. Make sure your
device has enough battery and enough memory for the interview. Minimize background noise
and adjust the brightness to optimal. Remember these things might seem unimportant but
they hold a great value to the overall impact of the virtual interview. Some more things to
consider are: make sure you will not be distracted or disturbed during the interview. Maintain
eye contact, stay relaxed and be attentive to the interviewer. Ask questions and listen
thoughtfully to the answers. Think before you answer questions from the interviewer- don't
ramble and keep the conversation on the topic.
6. 4. Be Prepared for the Interview
Research the company beforehand- every business has a website, social media presence, and
digital profile. You can learn what they do and who their customers are. Try and align your
goals and vision’s with them. The preparation shows the interviewer you are interested in the
job and took the initiative to find out all you could about the company.
7. 5. Be Present in the Interview
Asking mindful questions and being present during the interview is important. You should not
look like you are there to wait for a bus. The interviewer must feel like you are paying
attention. Be enthusiastic, ask questions and participate in the interview. After listing all the
duties required for the position, your reply should not just be “I can do the job.” If you are not
excited in the interview, there are chances that you will not feel energized in the workplace
either.
First impressions count. You must let the interviewer know you want the job, are willing to
work hard and will do your best. You might not necessarily be the most qualified candidate,
but still, land the job because you were the most outstanding one. We hope these virtual
interview practices take you closer to your dream job. Good luck!
