UAlbany Students Educate Others to be Good Neighbors
As many of you may know the University at Albany has started its Off-
Campus Ambassador program. Currently, there are eight UAlbany students
living in Pine Hills who work to educate others on issues such as personal safe-
ty & how to be a good neighbor. They strive to build a sense of community
between students and neighbors by hosting programs, conducting bi-weekly
walks through their assigned areas and attending community based meetings.
On April 18th the Ambassadors suc-
ceeded in putting on a seemingly simple
but extremely impactful program that
benefited many residents in the commu-
nity. Through referrals from the Neigh-
borhood Association and via word of
mouth the Ambassadors reached out to a
number of residents in the neighborhood
who needed assistance with their spring
cleaning. The Ambassadors arranged
teams of student volunteers to respond to
these residents houses and help them
with tasks such as yard work, cleaning
out basements, vacuuming, sweeping,
scrubbing floors & bathrooms, cleaning
kitchens, tubs & stoves, washing dishes, etc. Many of the residents who partici-
pated in the program were elderly or disabled and were unable to do the
work on their own. After the program had concluded several of the residents
who had benefited from the student volunteers reached out to both the
Neighborhood Association as well as the University at Albany to express their
appreciation. (Continued )

The Pine Hills Improvement Group (PHIG) has much going on
and is working on even more!
PHIG Cleanup Program Pilot Project - This spring PHIG has been working on
the Cleanup Program Pilot Project with UAlbany student organizations - the Stu-
dent Association and the All Greek Council. Starting on March 5th, these groups
have been coordinating biweekly clean ups with their member groups to clean
up Hudson Street and Hamilton Street respectively with parts of Quail included
at times.
PHIG thanks Student Association Outreach Committee Chair, Saben Durio
and All Greek Council President, Nick Mayes for their leadership and commit-
ment in taking on this effort. We also thank Dan Healy for coordinating the
semi-annual Pine Hills Cleanups as well. The Cleanup on April 18th was a great
success!
We plan to create a pilot project for summer that includes local community
groups and then expand the PHIG Cleanup Program next fall to include more of
the student neighborhood. So if your community organization is willing to
clean up at least one weekend over the summer, please contact me at kpbit-
box@gmail.com.
PHIG Beautifying Midtown Survey & Project - So the project selected for this
year by most of the 80 people who participated in the PHIG survey is cleaning
up and planting around the trees on Madison Ave, between Partridge and
Quail. We are cleaned up around the trees during the Pine Hills Clean Up on
April 18th. The Albany City Gardener, Jessica Morgan, will provide us with
compost, mulch and daylilies.
We would also like to include perennials like hostas, black-eyed susans
(rudeckia), and cone flowers (echinacea). So, if you are dividing your perennials
this spring, please consider sharing them with us. You can contact me at kpbit-
box@gmail.com to let me know what you have and when you are dividing.
We will announce our community planting date as soon as the details are final-
ized. We will also need help with watering to establish them this summer. We
are also going to start conversations about public art projects and other garden-
ing opportunities next fall.
PHIG Fall Events - PHIG will also be participating in National Night Out on
Tuesday, August 4 and will again host Meet, Munch, & More planned for Sep-
tember 27th. If you are interested in participating or helping, please let us
know. More information will be shared as it become available.
Finally, PHIG has been reviewing conversations over the past year and incor-
porating them into our Ideas Plan to assess where we should put our efforts -
both those we can do ourselves and those we encourage others to do with us.
We always welcome ideas, concerns, and help.

UAlbany Students (continued)
Luke Rumsey (Assistant Director of
Neighborhood Life at the University at
Albany) stated that due to the program’s
high level of success he will be looking to
repeat the program again in the fall when
student’s return from summer interses-
sion. It’s programs such as these, where
we are helping one another that help
bring our community together.
