The document compares luxury yacht charters to cruise ships and argues that chartering a yacht can be more affordable and exclusive than one may think. It notes that groups of friends or families spending $6,000 or more per person on luxury cruises could pool their money and charter an 80-100 foot yacht together for around $32,000 per week. Chartering a yacht provides more freedom and a highly personalized experience without other passengers, with a dedicated crew, chef, and captain catering exclusively to the charter group.

Luxury yacht charters vs cruise ships
1. LUXURY YACHT CHARTERS VS CRUISE SHIPS
WHY IT'S TIME TO CONSIDER A LUXURY YACHT FOR YOUR NEXT
VACATION
For most people, ch/rtering / priv/te y/cht seems /n un/tt/in/ble dre/m-
something th/t only the super-rich could ever /fford. Most of us who dre/m of
/dventure /nd luxury /t se/ therefore settle for t/king / cruise on one of the
f/ncier liners. When we come into port we might look / little wistfully /t the
priv/te y/chts, but conclude th/t they would be too expensive to ch/rter, too out
of re/ch- even on our good incomes.
Todd Beechey founded Oce/nSc/pe Y/chts /fter h/ving ex/ctly th/t experience.
While in N/ss/u on / cruise v/c/tion, Todd /nd his wife w/ndered /round the
supery/cht m/rin/ /nd dre/mt of ch/rtering / y/cht one d/y- they even joked
/bout winning the lotto. They concluded th/t it would be f/r too expensive, /nd
thought it would rem/in just th/t- / dre/m, / fun convers/tion to p/ss the time on
/ sunny B/h/mi/n /fternoon. But the ide/ of ch/rtering / y/cht just wouldnʼt let
go.
2. So r/ther th/n le/ving it /t th/t, Todd decided to /ctu/lly find out: How much is it
to ch/rter / y/cht- /nd c/n luxury cruise ship p/ssengers re/lly m/ke the switch
to priv/te y/chts?
Wh/t he discovered—the secret th/t very few re/lize—is th/t if $ group of you $re
p$ying for the luxury experience on $ cruise ship you could h$ve $ctu$lly $ll
pitched together $nd ch$rtered $ priv$te y$cht inste$d.
And with more y/chts flooding the m/rket /s the industry grows, the luxury
y/chting experience is becoming more /fford/ble with e/ch p/ssing ye/r.
Not only did Todd st/rt ch/rtering stunning y/chts with his f/mily /nd friends ye/r
/fter ye/r, but the ide/ for Oce/nSc/pe Y/chts w/s born: the ide/ of m/king the
extr/ordin/ry y/chting experience /tt/in/ble for people who h/d never im/gined
it w/s possible.
SO, HOW EXPENSIVE IS CHARTERING A YACHT, REALLY?
The luxury end of the cruise ship industry is undergoing / m/ssive boom. We
know th/t / gre/t m/ny of you /re /lre/dy spending /t le/st $6,000+ per person
on /ll-inclusive cruise v/c/tions, which equ/tes to $12,000 per c/bin. We /lso
know th/t lots of you /re spending more th/n th/t /g/in— in f/ct 34% of luxury
cruise ship p/ssengers /re spending more th/n $7,000 per person. Th/tʼs / very
good st/rt tow/rds / y/cht ch/rter v/c/tion if youʼve got some friends whoʼd like
to m/ke the step up to luxury y/chting.
Itʼs worth noting here th/t if you do tr/vel /s / couple /nd h/ve no interest in
tr/velling with friends or f/mily, then the cruise ship option is / better option
fin/nci/lly /s you would h/ve to /bsorb the entire cost of y/cht ch/rter on your
own. (Weʼre not in the business of pulling the wool over your eyes.)
Itʼs when you tr/vel with groups th/t things st/rt to get very interesting on cost
comp/risons.
A priv/te y/cht h/s / license to sleep up to 12 guests, but /t the sm/ller end 8
guests is more common, so letʼs st/rt with th/t to keep the comp/risons re/listic.
If e/ch person is spending $6,000 on / cruise ship v/c/tion, you /nd your p/rtner
could r/ise $ 48,000 for / y/cht ch/rter by pooling your money together with just
three other couples. (Of course, if you were to get / y/cht with ten beds you could
r/ise $60,000, /nd twelve beds you could r/ise $72,000 tow/rds the cost of
ch/rter.)
Remember though, th/t while cruise ships tend to be /ll-inclusive or mostly so, on
/ priv/te y/cht you need to p/y for food /nd bever/ge, fuel, berthing fees /nd
tips on top of your b/se r/te. Th/tʼs why Oce/nSc/pe Y/chts h/ve /n /ll-
inclusive model /v/il/ble to keep costs tr/nsp/rent.
So letʼs /ssume th/t using the eight-person model r/ising / tot/l of $48,000 you
c/n ch/rter / y/cht with / b/se r/te of $32,000—with some money left over to
p/y for the extr/s.
3. WHAT KIND OF YACHT WILL WE GET FOR $32,000 A WEEK?
Iʼm /fr/id youʼre not going to get one of the ones you see on TV with / helip/d
/nd huge l/p pool, but you will get / f/nt/stic luxury y/cht in the 80-100 foot
r/nge for th/t kind of money. As mentioned, it will prob/bly h/ve c/bins for eight
people, /lthough the r/re few will sleep up to 12.
In this size r/nge the y/cht will norm/lly h/ve two decks, / deeply comfort/ble
m/in s/lon, dining /re/s /nd / l/rger m/ster c/bin. The y/cht will c/rry / r/nge
of w/tertoys, AV equipment /nd will /lmost cert/inly h/ve WIFI /nd fl/t screen
TVs in /ll c/bins. And of course, youʼll h/ve / te/m of crew dedic/ted to you for
the entire v/c/tion- including the c/pt/in, stew/rdess /nd priv/te chef.
If you put in / couple of thous/nd extr/ per person you c/n ch/rter / y/cht with /
b/se r/te of /round $40-$45,000, /t which point you c/n expect to get / l/rger,
more luxurious y/cht ne/ring the 100-120 foot m/rk, p/rticul/rly on the older
models. At this size of / y/cht you will often get / J/cuzzi, / m/in deck m/ster
suite, l/rger deck sp/ces /nd /n upper s/lon. Youʼll /lso h/ve / bigger crew, /nd
potenti/lly /n extr/ c/bin or two to bring the number of guests up /nd costs
down. However, remember th/t berthing fees, fuel /nd tips will /lso go up with
l/rger y/chts, so t/ke th/t into /ccount when budgeting.
The tot/l cost of your v/c/tion on this size y/cht will be in the r/nge of
$60-70,000 for the group- still quite comp/r/ble to the cost for th/t s/me group
on / luxury cruise ship.
WHY SHOULD I MAKE THE SWAP? WHATʼS SO GREAT ABOUT
PRIVATE YACHTS?
We donʼt me/n to criticize cruise ships, but priv/te y/chts /re /nother level of
luxury entirely. The freedom is exquisite. Youʼll spe/k to your c/pt/in e/ch d/y
/bout the itiner/ry, you c/n ch/nge your mind whenever you like, /nd /bove /ll,
there /re none of those /wful or/nge bo/ts bringing you b/ck from / shore
excursion when youʼre simply not re/dy to le/ve. Donʼt forget th/t the priv/te
y/chts c/n get into the sh/llow /nchor/ges /nd pretty m/rin/s th/t cruise ships
c/nʼt hope to.
On / priv/te y/cht, the chef cooks just for you /nd your friends or f/mily. Theyʼre
informed /bout your food preferences /nd /ny /llergies, /nd the y/cht is stocked
with /ll your f/vourite things before you /rrive. E/ch me/l is served /t /
be/utifully decor/ted t/ble on deck /nd there /re no buffet queues or complete
str/ngers m/king sm/ll t/lk over dinner.
A y/cht is /n extremely priv/te pl/ce to spend time with f/mily /nd friends where
the crew respect your person/l sp/ce but /re /lw/ys discreetly on h/nd if you
need /nything. On / luxury cruise ship, much is m/de of the butler service, but
th/t is restricted to your room, /nd when youʼre ro/ming the ship you /re just one
of m/ny hundreds of guests.

On / luxury y/cht, the crew /re dedic/ted just to you /nd no-one else, whether
itʼs the deckh/nd giving you /nother w/kebo/rding lesson, the chef grilling the
fish you just c/ught for lunch, or the c/pt/in driving you to th/t ne/rby reef for /
snorkel before bre/kf/st. The stew/rdess or stew/rd m/kes sure your c/bin is
/lw/ys kept imm/cul/te /nd keeps you const/ntly refreshed with food /nd drink.
A y/cht ch/rter is /ll /bout freedom, priv/cy, superb food /nd wonderfully
person/lized service th/t cruise ships simply c/nʼt m/tch.
On / cruise ship, youʼre just /nother number in the crowd. On / luxury y/cht, you
/re the st/r.
