children, neuropathy and premature

PROJECT BACKGROUND:
The Issue:
 Arsenic contamination in groundwater
 About 140 million people worldwide affected
 Concentrations can exceed WHO standards by up
to 100 times
 Arsenic poisoning can be painful, socially
ostracizing, or fatal
 Arsenic is tasteless, colorless, odorless and has no
immediate effects
 “Technological graveyard” situation: currently
available technologies are either inefficient,
unaffordable, or not culturally adapted

appropriate technological solution
The Need:
 Efficiency: Prevent prolonged contact
with arsenic in drinking water
 Acceptability: Ensure financial, time
and social burdens are socially
acceptable
The Technology:
 Low Cost Electro‐Coagulation
 Known wastewater technology, yet never
applied to drinking water
 Series of 3 distinct processes:
 1. Dosing: Formation of Arsenic‐Binding
Corrosion Products (ABCP) through
electrochemical dissolution of iron
electrodes
 2. Mixing: Coagulation of ABCP with
arsenic
 3. Filtration: Mechanical removal of the
arsenic‐ laden ABCP

Plasma Electro-Oxidation
Plasma Electro-oxidation is a unique and latest technology successfully
implemented in various countries. Advantages are:
 No addition of chemicals for coagulant
 Very low operating cost
 Less requirement of space and civil work
 Kills Bacteria and coliform
 Removal of Heavy metals
 Simple, easy to operate and maintain
Advantages of the proposed
treatment scheme:
 Low operating cost
 Very small Footprint
 Low emission of CO2 and Methane.
 Can handle any Shock loads, no failures due to shock loads
 The process itself is disinfecting the bacteria and
thus reduces the Coliform and E-Coli extensively.
Plasma Electro-Oxidation
It is one of most powerful commercially available oxidants &
disinfectant for water treatment. Compared to Chlorine, the most
common water disinfection chemical, it is more than 50% stronger
oxidizer and acts over 3000 times faster. In addition to its capabilities,
it is an environmentally friendly method of treatment without creating
harmful by products or significant residues.
