A number can be made of more
than one digit. So we use place
value heading, like ones, tens,
hundreds and thousands, to help
us understand the value of each
digit.

It is the most important concept when
teaching maths
If numbers aren’t in the correct ‘places’
students will come to an incorrect answer
They need to be aware what each value
represents for the calculation to make sense
