A
nn Goldberg is a Vancouver artist who
worked in architecture for a number of years
before shifting her focus to the practice of
painting. She grew up in Edmonton, Alberta; painting
since the age of 3. She earned a BSc in Mathematics
and Fine Arts from the University of Victoria and then
went on to complete a degree in Architecture from the
University of British Columbia.
To state it simply, her work is concerned primarily with
issues of realism and the representation of everyday
objects. Her singular focus on the object presented
removes it from the banality of everyday life - the
fact that so much skill, attention and energy has been
poured into the representation of the object elevates
it from its context.
Ann Goldberg captures and renders the artist’s im-
pression of beauty in everyday life. Influenced by the
dominance of the photographic image, the history of
Pop art and the brilliance of transparent materials like
glass or sunlit water, Goldberg’s hyperrealist paintings
seek to find beauty in the familiar.
Goldberg’s paintings while at first glance appear highly
detailed and tightly photo-realistic are actually com-
posed of very loose brushstrokes. They are not the
heavy, darkened still-life paintings of art history books.
They are filled with light.
She paints from photographs, but she is neither pro-
ducing a detailed representation like that of a photo-
graph, nor representing familiar things as they actually
are - subtly oscillating between representation and
abstraction.
Her paintings can be found in private and public col-
lections throughout North America.
